Villanova? - Boca Rocket - 03-10-2012 11:13 AM

Talk has gotten serious again to Villanova FB moving to the BE, but at what point? Would a stint in the MAC help be beneficial for the Wildcats and the MAC? Almost seems like a no brainer at this point. Still maintain the Philly media market. The MAC has started to gain a holdhold in the Philly market. Why lose what has been gained?

Don't think they can play DI football in a second conference, if the main conference they belong to has DI football as well.

Incredibly unlikely to happen. They would be far more likely to join Georgetown in the Patriot League than they would to consider being a MAC affiliate in football.

U of Delaware is only 50 miles outside of Philly and may have more alumni in Philly than Villanova as they are a slightly bigger school.

Yea if it came to Villanova and UD I think the MAC may as well go UD.

Nova is going to get financial assistance in moving FB to the Big East so I don't see where the MAC comes into play here.

Boise State is planning to do exactly that in the Big East/WAC combo.

The issue is, if you guys are frustrated with teams leaving, why the hell would the MAC even take a phone call from Villanova? They're gone to the Big East as soon as they don't suck.

NO NO NO not unless we are guaranteed another giant heap of cast from the Big East (double what temple paid)...

There is no reason for Nova to not go directly to the BE and miss out on the additional money for being a BE FB school. They would lose millions a year if they did something like that.

NO to Villanova and YES to JMU

RE: Villanova? - mikeinsec127 - 03-11-2012 12:47 PM

IMO Nova is not going to be able to move up. It is going to take the BE $ and pocket it. Even with the BE $, Nova has no fans, no stadium, no decent facilities and no major backing form corporations, alumni, or the greater community.
I realize that you guys are stuck at 13 again and want to even out. If the goal is another eastern football only, then right now your best bet is Stoney Brook moving up. Those Virginia CAA schools would all require an all sports invite. Richmond would not, being in the A10 for olympic sports. But the Spiders just moved out of City Stadium to a new one on campus. It only seats 7500-8000 and is not expandable.
The obvious southern schoools are either not ready or need an all sports invite. The NE schools can't afford to keep up. Fordham would have to make too big of a jump. That pretty much leaves just Stoney Brook as the target.

+1 If JMU joins the MAC for all sports AND brings in UMASS for all sports or another Eastern school for all sports in 2014.

RE: Villanova? - Lolly Popp - 03-11-2012 01:55 PM

Villanova is not moving up. They have been putting on a dog and pony show in an effort to calm down the basketball boosters, who are irate about Temple joining the Big East.

The money the Big East is paying Villanova to "improve facilities" is basically a refund for the money the Wildcats spent on consultants last year when they got rudely rebuffed.

Getting $1 million from the Big East won't even buy Villanova a scoreboard, and they need a whole lot more than that. The Eagles do not want a third team at the Linc either.

What the MAC needs to do is pawn UMass off to the Alliance in 2013 and forget about football-only schools. If you want JMU and ODU, make them an all-sports package deal.
