PAC-12 Tourney moves to Vegas - War Torn Ruston - 03-07-2012 02:02 AM

Vegas is getting a little crowded.

@wilnerhotlineHearing that Pac-12 tourney headed to MGM Grand Garden starting '13. Official announcement expected next Tuesday.

It would be wise to move the WAC out of Vegas. Put it in Denver and Arlington(If the Texas schools don't leave for the SBC)

Vegas loves college hoop tournaments...from the holidays (Thanksgiving/Christmas) to post-season....Vegas has multiple arenas that host these type of tournaments.

RE: PAC-12 Tourney moves to Vegas - HP-TBDPITL - 03-07-2012 07:23 AM

I expect to see the new conference's tourney in Vegas as well. With the flights cheap to Vegas everyone can get there and it is geographically ideal with two in state schools. It should be one of the best tourneys in the country and will help the TV package with primetime time slots in every time zone.

Ouch for UNLV infringing on their local turf.

The question I have is where is the alliance planning to play its men's basketball tournament?

I guess if they add UT-San Antonio they can play in the Alamo Dome.

Probably will be in Vegas is my guess, if not every year then certainly every couple of years. Gotta put it in a place where the local fans will support it, so I'd look at Vegas, New Mexico, and UTEP going forward.

Would really be interesting if the Big East took UNLV. Then, UNLV plays in the Garden all the way over in NYC while the PAC-12 plays in UNLV's home city on UNLV's home court.

I love everything about this move. As fun as the LA area overall can be, downtown LA (where the Staples Center is located) still leaves a lot to be desired as a tourist destination, although it's a whole lot better than it was a few years ago with LA Live opening. With the eastward expansion of the Pac-12, Vegas is more easily accessible by more conference members. Pretty much half of LA heads to Vegas every weekend, anyway, so you're really not losing that many UCLA and USC people and you're going to gain people from other areas. Finally, it's a way for the Pac-12 to stake a claim in a growing Vegas metro/Nevada state market that's starved for big-time sports without having to add UNLV or Nevada, neither of whom would really fit well within the conference. It makes so much sense - great move by Larry Scott.

RE: PAC-12 Tourney moves to Vegas - War Torn Ruston - 03-07-2012 11:09 AM

This would make if I am not mistaken the 4th conference to hold the tourney in Vegas. Wonder when Miko will bring up the ACC going to the Thomas & Mack?

Not on UNLV's home court. UNLV's home court is the Thomas & Mack Center. The MWC tournament is played there. The Pac-12 will be at the arena at the MGM Grand. The WCC and WAC hold their conference tournaments at the Orleans Arena at the Orleans Hotel and Casino.

RE: PAC-12 Tourney moves to Vegas - He1nousOne - 03-07-2012 12:28 PM

In a scenario where the NCAA goes forward with rule changes the PAC is in a very precarious position. It is very likely that a Big 12 pull won't be possible. They may find their conference champion with one less game on their record then the other conference champions they are competing with. Considering that game, if that particular rule change happens, would be against a strong conference semifinal foe it would leave the PAC in a weakened state. That could drive the conference to look at secondary options for the PAC.

I am really unfamiliar with UNLV, in what ways are they unfit for joining the PAC now and should the PAC have to ease some restrictions in order to get to 16 does that then shoot UNLV up to the top of the "new list"? UNLV has a huge investment coming in to modernize it's stadium as well as other facilities. Would this modernize them enough?

I guess that depends on how soon we get that announcement for The Alliance as well as what new system is put in place for deciding national champions. I do think these changes will be coming sooner rather than later though. An announcement about a new change in the future will likely be soon with the changes happening a couple years from now perhaps.

I think UNLV would be a good pick up for the PAC in comparison to what other choices they would have if their initial choices in the Big 12 are not available to them.

I think UNLV would be a good pick up for the PAC in comparison to what other choices they would have if their initial choices in the Big 12 are not available to them.

(1) Academics - "Tier 2" in the US News rankings (which is really Tier 3 in the traditional sense since they've changed how they group the rankings), which means that they aren't even ranked. They would be the worst-ranked Pac-12 school by a massive margin (and it's not even close - we're talking at least 70 spots lower than the currently lowest ranked Pac-12 school of Oregon State at #138).

(2) Commuter school reputation - It might be changing, but this is the perception.

Location-wise, UNLV is great, but institutionally, it needs to change a lot to fit in with Berkeley, UCLA, USC and Stanford (all of whom have veto votes since expansion needs to be unanimous in the Pac-12). The Pac-12 will "ease its restrictions" if it means getting Texas and Oklahoma (meaning that they would take Texas Tech and Oklahoma State to get their fellow bigger named brothers), but UNLV isn't in that discussion. (And by easing restrictions, I mean just academically. Financially, what Texas is demanding from the Pac-12 is a complete non-starter - the Pac-12 will NOT capitulate on the TV network issue no matter how much money UT might bring in.)

Yeah, I am in agreement with you I suppose. We shall see what the future holds but in the expansion category I think that the PAC is in a very precarious position. If Texas and crew decide to stake their future in the Big 12 then the PAC's best position would be to hold up any proceedings that push for new NCAA rules.

There really isn't much else to choose from out there. I do hope that UNLV can build up to the point that it is a reasonable choice. I think the folks of Nevada deserve some representation in the PAC now that Utah and Colorado do. Do you think Nevada could get to an acceptable position more quickly than UNLV could?

UNLV needs a massive infusion of capital and research money. Not so much for the Pac, but for the state and Vegas to develop it as a major university. They don't need to think about the Cal/Stanford academic level; just getting UNLV to the level of Arizona State would be a big boost for them.

That and establishing working research partnerships with existing Pac schools would help as well. Both CU and UU have long partnered with Pac schools on research projects, instituitionally both schools were already a fit which is why neither is surprising as our newest members.

Don't think LA will miss the Pac12 tournament.

Will this affect betting on the games? I know that it's illegal to bet on UNLV games at the casinos.

I believe that the rule has changed. You can bet on UNLV games in Vegas now (and presumably any other events taking place in Vegas). The only thing that seems to be illegal now is when there are bets taken when a casino and sports team have common ownership (e.g. you can't bet on the Sacramento Kings at the Palms since the Maloof brothers own both).
