The New BIG 24 Conference (UPDATED) - ECUPirated - 02-16-2012 05:04 PM

I was gonna add this to one of the many threads on this subject, but didn't want them to get lost in the shuffle, so I started another thread. My apologies ahead of time.

Of all the considerations to bring a new team into the conference, I think the two biggest are
1. One does the new school bring a market.
2. Does the new school fit regionally (meaning each pod).

I know there are many that will tear this scenario to shreds for various reasons, but I think this scenario allows the new "Big 24 Conference" to have it's cake and eat it too.

As a fan, I've said before, I don't really care about the amount of revenue the conference or the school itself can make. I care about good football, reasonable drives for away games, and ultimately just a successful season if nothing else against teams that we're "SUPPOSED" to beat and "UPSETS" against those were not.

This proposed scenario brings in some major markets (whether the school is the big attraction in that particular media market or not (i.e. see some of the Big East invites) and creates the ability to have regional rivalries for the sake of traveling fans.

I really don't understand some of the heartache with some FCS additions, as I have some in the scenario. Looking down on them, is no different than one of the Big conferences looking down on most of us. Anyway, just my thoughts with a visual.

Have at it.

Would be gaining the number 4, 6, 9, 16, 29, 33, 36 and 43 of TOP 50 markets.

I just think they need to get the best teams possible regardless of location and maybe even cutting the dead weight if that is possible.
I have nothing against Rice for example but they simply cannot compete in football against other teams. Same with UNLV. Their football has been really bad as of late and in a city like Vegas it should never be as bad as it is. Tulane? Another private school who has to many restrictions. UAB. The state will not even help or pretend UAB is there.
It really does not matter how good a team like Southern Miss gets, when teams like that make up the majority of your schedule you are gonna be a big fish in a small pond no one cares about.
Boise was the only exception thanks to them playing an average Oklahoma team, 3 trick plays, and a marriage proposal. The starts aligned for them and ESPN helped with the games at Oregon 2X, Va Tech, and Georgia. The starts probably will not align like that again.

Only way I could figure out how to post a picture from my desktop. Attached to an email and then opened the email, the picture and then linked that. I signed off the website and came back on as a guest and I can see the pics still. Just takes a second for them to pop on. Is there another way to post them off my desktop?

Your link should end in .jpg or .png or something. You can't link it out of your email though. You need to upload it to a site. Facebook would work. Just upload it then click 'copy image url'. Don't use the web address it shows in the bar overhead.

Man if I were ECU I would be looking into a conference with the 10 eastern schools and look to add to those schools and dump the western schools. Those 10 schools have 3 HUGE markets ( Atlanta, Nashville, Philadelphia ) on your board, and it wouldn't be that hard for them IMO to add schools like Western Kentucky, App State, Arkansas State, FAU, Charlotte to get to 12 or possibly 14 school conference. One would think that someone like Terry Holland of ECU has thought of this for a regional conference with this type of markets would be a hell of a lot better than joining those schools amongst the west.

So you want them to be in a weaker conference? 01-wingedeagle

Could still be the case, but I think TH is contradictory in a way, meaning he wants that regionality we would have with an Eastern based conference, but at the same time he wants ECU's name in a newspaper in San Jose. Boise became a nationwide household name obviously because of the cinderella seasons, BCS bowls, Statue of Liberty plays, etc. How do you get your school's name out there all the way across the country, by only playing teams 3 hours down the road.

Already thought about Temple #4. Villanova can cry all they want. Temple will end up getting "reinvited". Sucks for the Alliance, probably the best football / basketball combo out there right now.

Too many. No more than 20 football schools IMO.

Great map -- having the visual always is a helper in explaining positions! ;-)

CUSA officials seem to have a lot of interest in WKU with all of the campus visits the last few years.

Nice work. Wow

Would rather be in the same division as UAB and the Florida schools

I basically agree with you NQ. I think 18-20 is ideal, but I see this as a forecast of what is to come. If it does come to fruition this way, at least nothing will be a surprise. The Atlantic bracket is intriguing to me for a couple of reasons.

1. I like the thought of hitting 6 home games and traveling 3 hrs to Norfolk, 5-6 hrs to Philly, 6 hrs to Huntington, 7 hrs to Atlanta and maybe even taking a trip to Nashville. (Lots of traveling fans)

2. I also like the thought of facing Southern Miss during the regular season and if both teams win their pod, facing them again in a semifinal.

Each pod plays 3 OOC, 5 intrapod games, 3 interpod games (Atlantic v Gulf) and (Mountain v Pacific). Every year the pods would rotate, so the next year it might be 3 interpod games (Atlantic v Mountain) and (Gulf v Pacific).

3. Creates some matchup like ECU v Air Force every few years just to mix it up in football only.

4. 12th game would be semifinals for pod winners and then 2-2, 3-3 and so on.

5. 13th game would be Conference championship.

6. 14th game (NCAA approval) would be the bowl game.
