A Visual Aid - WilsonPirate - 02-09-2012 10:49 AM

Below is the composition of what is expected to be the Big East Conference and Alliance (football memberships, only. To date, I had not seen a side by side comparison of the two memberships, so here it is). They obviously have some differences and some similarities. With the absence of automatic qualification, and the fact that these two compositions will be "created" at roughly the same time, it is safe to presume that these two conferences will be direct competitors during television contract negotiations. How will the networks value them?

Can you switch the alliances X and Z- to make it closer to the east/west?

also- you left out Rice and Colorado St from the alliance.

RE: A Visual Aid - stever20 - 02-09-2012 10:54 AM

the thing that sticks out to me- even if the Big East was just this group only for hoops- they would still be comfortably ahead of the alliance in hoops. You'd have Memphis, San Diego St, UConn, Louisville, and Cincy... Alliance only has New Mexico, UNLV, and So Miss(this year at least)...

RE: A Visual Aid - b0ndsj0ns - 02-09-2012 11:05 AM

You've left Rice and Colorado State off our list.

Indeed. Changes coming.

RE: A Visual Aid - WilsonPirate - 02-09-2012 11:16 AM

I've made the changes. My apologies to Rice and CSU, it was completely unintentional.

It is difficult to determine how the divisional boundaries will be drawn for the Big East, but I gave it my best guess.

RE: A Visual Aid - b0ndsj0ns - 02-09-2012 11:20 AM

I'd say the merger either needs to add no one or try to add Temple and whichever F_U you prefer and move UTEP west. Pretty much dependent on does Temple want to join. Without Temple I don't see any reason to add 2 other teams.

RE: A Visual Aid - stever20 - 02-09-2012 11:21 AM

football-
Big East in the east has a decent advantage. Louisville and Cincy cancel out Southern Miss and Tulsa. Uconn and ECU cancel out. Left with USF, Rutgers, and Navy vs Tulane, UTEP, UAB, Marshall, Rice. Fairly big advantage BE there.
west though is where the killing happens. No body in alliance west has answer for Boise at all. They just don't. And the thing is teams 2-4- big East has huge advantages as well....

RE: A Visual Aid - CardFan1 - 02-09-2012 11:22 AM

Navy to West,UCF to the East, UL?

RE: A Visual Aid - Wedge - 02-09-2012 11:37 AM

Likely that Louisville joins the B12 and AFA replaces them in BE football... then the alliance might move UTEP to the west and add an eastern/central team to their eastern division.

Memphis in the East, USF in the West.

Not a real ideal way to split the Big East (in its current form). This way eastern Teams play a Florida and Texas team every year either home or away.

SMU/UH on alternating crossover schedules. Same deal with UCF/USF.

"If" the Big East landed Air Force and/or BYU then a true East West division would be more practicle.

I'm almost sure Memphis will be in the west.

RE: A Visual Aid - stever20 - 02-09-2012 11:49 AM

I think Memphis was brought in with the knowledge they would be in the west.

Let me just stop you here. No we don't. I don't care that they've been blown out in some token BCS bowl game because of their conference affiliation. UConn football and ECU football are not equals in any form or fashion. Carry on.

RE: A Visual Aid - stever20 - 02-09-2012 12:04 PM

Ratings wise the last several years- they do.

Final BCS ratings last several years:
UConn 78, 26, 44, 49, 25, 67= avg last 6 years 48.17
ECU: 81,64,32,32,70,64= avg last 6 years 57.17

I'm sorry, but that's just the case. If anything, UConn has been a bit stronger the last 6 years. ECU only twice in the last 6 years has been a top half team.

Ratings wise the last several years? Don't care. This is one case where numbers don't tell the whole story. Husky football =/= Pirate football. We're just going to have to disagree.

RE: A Visual Aid - stever20 - 02-09-2012 03:09 PM

I don't think you realize how good UConn has been the last few years...
2006 4-8
2007 9-4
2008 8-5
2009 8-5
2010 8-5
2011 5-7
total 42-34 (38-26 last 5)

ECU those 6 years
2006 7-6
2007 8-5
2008 9-5
2009 9-5
2010 6-6
2011 5-7
total 44-34(37-28 last 5)

The extra wins due to C-USA having a title game. UConn's ratings higher because SOS much better in the Big East than in C-USA... I stand by my statement that they right now cancel each other out. My original thought though that the other teams in the Big East Eastern division just kill the other teams in the Alliance's east.

RE: A Visual Aid - Jugnaut - 02-09-2012 08:26 PM

The Big East looks infinitely more attractive.

I don't think you'd be wise in leaving UAB, in particular, and UTEP off (yes, they're having bad years this year.. but most any other year, they were comparable.. UAB only had one year with less than 20 wins since 2002... {well, 2 after this year as they can't make 20}).

UTEP's been an on-again/off-again team...

RE: A Visual Aid - kmcc505 - 02-09-2012 09:09 PM

Not even close really. Big East all the way.
