No,
He went to Pershing HS, and Wayne State (played baseball).
Besides he's from Detroit, and apparently SE MI is to be avoided, but Illinois is OK.

THE "OUT THERE GANG"
( better than "The Over The Hill Gang")

Well, we'll fess-up.
Most of our commentary is motivated by the inspirational leadership of the WMU PREZ.
(bring up theme, "i"m Head'n for the Last Round-Up" G.A.)

Although several of us may be, metaphorically speaking, "on the back nine", this is more fun
than "writing letters to the editor".
Apparently, enough people are reading these essays and comments to be a great encouragement to all of us.
There's no end in sight.
Relieved?

Our collective age, wisdom, time spent at WMU, has given us an appreciation
for a Wide Bandwidth of Humor.

Persons who enjoy the diverse humor of the Marx Brothers, the Blues Brothers,
Monty Python, WCFields, and George Carlin, among others, can sense the
Comparison of the WMU Drama, and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" !

Under the Banner and Battle Cry of "It's Not Nice To Beat-Up On Old People!" ,
we will prevail.

We are assured, that these writings may be brought into evidence, on our behalf,
in defense of our attempts to avoid commitment to THE HOME.

Now, you know the rest of the story !

CONGRATULATIONS !
to all Broncos, and a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New/Next Year !

Many of us in SouthEastern Michigan that have been Broncos for over Fifty Years are
extremely Happy and Proud of our Football Teams Accomplishments.

Things just keep getting Better and Better !

While Coach Fleck has given the appropriate credit to the players and staff, he's
also acknowledged the Kalamazoo Community as a wonderful place to live and attend WMU.

For many of us, that chose WMU and Kalamazoo as a place to reside for several years, and
learn academically, and experience life, the Community was an important factor in making that choice.
We're extremely happy, that the Coach acknowledged this often understated fact.

BTW, WOTS is that Assistant Coach Dunn has been given a Five Year Contract Extension to recruit
International Football players for WMU.
Could North Korea be next ?

WHO WANTS TO KNOW..................?

One of our colleagues has heard a rumor, that Captain Spaulding will be
leading the expedition to NK, accompanied by Assistant Coach Dunn.

There is some question, as to whether Dennis Rodman will be joining the entourage.

HUMOR and SATIRE

Most of our colleagues enjoy reading the content of BS for current sports teams
activity, and information about "What's Happening!" at WMU, many miles away
from the majority of WMU Alumni and Friends.

Even some of the adversarial mental jousting, and point-counterpoint dueling,
is entertaining and informative.

We aren't sure BANNING anyone services any purpose, beyond lessening some
of the humorous tone of the frivolous banter, that's entertaining for most
observers and participants.
We were BANNED once, for some unexplained reason.
Possibly a Personal Dislike?

We suspect that the term ENTERTAINING, would be defined in a variety of ways,
by those who regularly participate in BS.

However, let's not get too serious about any of these posts and lose perspective.
It could be a sure sign, you're headed to the South Campus!

Go Broncos!

WORLD TOUR
(again)

Our colleagues wonder if someone isn't in "Hot Pursuit" of the PREZ,
given the time he spends wandering around the country/world.

This "meandering" doesn't seem to have any real purpose.
No wonder questions arise, as to whether there's an analysis of any
measurable "positive outcome" to all the junkets/vacations the PREZ takes each year.
You may recall, terms such as "cost effectiveness", "return on investment", etc.

Of course, these locations seem to favor warm weather, and/or sporting events.

The fact that there isn't a normally functioning WMU Alumni Association begs the question,
do you suppose the PREZ is traveling around the country to establish/re-establish
WMU Alumni Association Chapters ?
What a Nobel Cause that would be !
Almost justifiable............

Some of you may remember, Alumni Association Chapter Meetings, Chapter Regional Golf Outings,
Membership Dues to support Chapter Meetings and Activities, (as opposed to Building Renovations for the Locals),
even WMU Alumni Association Membership Cards and Discounts!

Observation: overheard at the WMU Ad. Bldg.
"Do you think it's early onset ?"
"No, it's too late for that !"

THE NEXT LEVEL !

For most of us that participated in athletics in our youth, these experiences
taught us some of life's most important lessons.

Always aiming for improvement in anything we hope to achieve, has been a
constant striving, we have come to accept, without question.

Is it any wonder, that the regressive approach to Alumni Relations has been a
great disappointment to many of us that recall our fond experiences of
"those thrilling days of yesteryear" while attending WMU.

Perhaps, the abilities and progressive attitudes of Coach Fleck, should be applied
to positively engaging all Western Michigan University Alumni in an organized
approach, rather than primarily focusing on self promotion, and the financial
aspect of separating the Alumni from their monies.

Organizing and managing a journey for progressing to the next level, should be
Important Goals of any organization, especially a University.

Anything less for Western Michigan University should be unacceptable.

It is clear that our beloved WMU sorely lacks any plans for progress.

RE: Alumni Association. - JHoover - 05-03-2016 08:58 PM

IMPRESSIVE SENSE OF ORGANIZATION
While the PREZ wanders around the Far East,
the Goal Directed FB Staff has advanced on an impressive campaign to recruit
FB Players and Future Alumni for our Alma Mater, throughout the State of Michigan.
Perhaps, the FB Staff could be assigned to recruit CURRENT ALUMNI for a
WMU Alumni Association.

Always, STRIVING FOR IMPROVEMENT !

Burning Questions:
In what States will the Broncos be holding their Satellite FB Camps ?
What TV Channels will be broadcasting the 2017 Spring FB Game ?

There have been over 7300 visits to this thread, since our last posting.

Question of the Day:
Does he get to keep all those Frequent Flyer Miles ?

RE: Alumni Association. - JHoover - 05-10-2016 07:38 PM

MERGER,
ABOLISHMENT, or HOSTILE TAKE OVER ?

Our Operatives in Kalamazoo have informed us that there is a recently
announced vacancy in the Alumni Department.

Rumor has it, that the Department will be either abolished, the name changed
to the Collections Department, or transferred to the Athletic Department.

The Organizational Ability of the FB Recruitment Management System, seems to be a natural
for organizing the recruitment of WMU Alumni for a yet to be established / resurrected,
Western Michigan Alumni Association.

Are Satellite Camps a possibility ?

VP of Development is leaving in June.

President is (likely) announcing his retirement soon.

Change is coming.

I like President Dunn and he has done a nice job building WMU back from the mess Dorothy left.

When Dunn retires, I would like to see a WMU man/woman in the president's office. We need someone with a passion for the school and campus and with a strong appreciation for not only where WMU has been, but where it is going.

It sure would be nice to have Keith Pretty return to Kalamazoo:

Give every graduate a WMU magnet with the alumni association website address on it.

If Keith is ever going to come back, this would be the time. A lot of the 'old guard' that were pissed at him from before are now gone, so he could be a breath of fresh air. I have always like him.

That said, Keith left before we transitioned to a research university. I guarantee that will be in the criteria for the next president.

Research is fine, but WMU's bread & butter is, and always will be, undergraduate instruction. Our funding from State Government isn't ever going to match that of U-M or MSU. We could bring Moses back from the dead to be president, and that funding gap would not change, unfortunately.

Could make a case to disagree. One, only something south of 50% of funding is State based. Two, we'd have to run leaner and smarter than UM or MSU. Three, research becomes more than baseline academic and actually produces legitimate marketable research products. Research Universities must do research. We already are very proficient with the Undergrad segment of it.

RE: Alumni Association. - broncofan1 - 05-12-2016 09:32 PM

Whether we should focus on research or instruction is a different conversation altogether. The fact is that the BOT is committed to WMU as a research institution. It stands to reason that they will bring in someone who will maintain that commitment.

RE: Alumni Association. - JHoover - 06-06-2016 06:27 PM

FIRST CLASS!

(or LITTLE CLASS, or NO CLASS)

As we have mentioned many times before, if you want to have a First Class University (Elite),
it's a good idea to have First Class Operations.

Reducing the former Western Michigan Alumni Association to a Collections Department, and
taking monies from Alumni to renovate an old building, that many WMU Alumni will never see
the inside of (even to use the pay toilets), belies the disrespect towards all WMU Alumni.

Further, Social Media is not an adequate substitute for "In Person", and "Press the Flesh".

"Change is Coming !", has been among the comments voiced.
Yes, "the only thing constant is change", but will it be for the better ?
The last change was pretty "Regressive" !

BTW, we're sure the BOT will act in their best interest, but will it be in the best interests of
Western Michigan University Alumni and Students ?
