Not sure where a small private school in Virginia would fit in the FBS landscape . . .

It isn't small. They want to be a BYU/Notre Dame type school.

RE: Liberty to move to FBS? - army56mike - 12-15-2011 09:59 PM

LU currently has 13,000 students and wants to be at 20,000 by 2020 on campus. They have over 80,000 if you count their online students. They are sinking millions of dollars into campus improvements in academic, student life and athletics. They have a great football facility that is 20,000 and expanding to 30,000. Money is not an issue with Liberty. They will announce the results of their feasibility study on moving to FBS in Feb. or Mar. I am sure the answer will be move when there is an opening.

And yes, as 4x4hokies stated, they are trying to position themselves to evangelical Christians like Notre Dame is to Catholics and BYU is to Mormons.

same problem all eastern fcs upgrades have...mac or sunbelt? neither is a great fit

RE: Liberty to move to FBS? - wvucrazed - 12-16-2011 12:32 AM

This, along with UMASS and App State, might help spur JMU, ODU and maybe Delaware and Ga Southern into action. Perhaps with Charlotte and Ga State on the horizon. Could be the core of a new all-sports FBS league one day (with some non-FB members like GMU, VCU, Rhode Island, etc).

RE: Liberty to move to FBS? - 4x4hokies - 12-16-2011 01:52 AM

It makes the most sense for them all to join at once. You could create a good league from the top two programs in GA, NC, VA and a couple others added in. It'd rival any non AQ

The MAC could be a decent fit for Liberty actually.

Liberty would give the MAC that one private school playing FBS ball like the Big Ten has with Northwestern. They could pair Liberty with another nice regional addition like Appalachian State.

Didn't they just hire Turner Gill?

To bad they are evangelicals and their degrees arent respected by any educator.

Who cares what educators think? Too bad you are an idiot!

This is true. It will be interesting to see if any other conferences are going to want to be associated with them. I wonder what ODU and JMU feel about the folks down at Liberty.

I think that perception of Liberty is starting to change though.

That is scary, I thought they have to renounce science.

But anyhow I would like them to upgrade. I read somewhere JMU is thinking about it, and some day ODU will want to move up to FBS.

I see you already have intimate knowledge of the poster you quoted. He could use education on a lot of subjects, primarily the fact that in the big picture of college athletics in 2011 and beyond St Johns is even less of a blip on the radar screen than the non-AQ football programs he likes to run down.

Most southern based conferences would have no problem associating with Liberty. NJred....Taking shots at Liberty because of their religious affiliation is extremely poor form.

RE: Liberty to move to FBS? - army56mike - 12-18-2011 11:04 PM

I hope that is true. Liberty is a good school. I do wonder if conferences will shy away because of the schools mission. There are lots of universities out there that are private and sponsored by churches but have nothing to do with Christianity. Liberty holds it mission statement faithfully. Any conference suiter will have to accept that. But it is just sports and hopefully our Liberty kids continue to conduct themselves
with honor, respect and good sportsmanship on the field. Man! I hope we can move up in the next couple years to FBS. Go Flames!

How is Liberty about playing games on Sunday? Until recently Campbell U. didn't want to play Sunday games but now they do. It presented some problems for them when it came to conference affiliation and basketball tourneys.

I'm not completely sure. But they did play a basketball game on Sunday this season already.
