First Gavitt's son becomes an associate commisioner and in the last few days John Marinatto has been named Senior Associate Commissioner. Judging by there background both men seem to have only a basketball background, and like Dave Gavitt and Tranghese are alums of Providence. From the outside looking in it seems the "Catholic Schools" are grooming a successor for MT. Does it seem odd that no one with some football experance is getting a job or promoted? Dare I hope the split is closer then 2010? Or is this just business as usual?

I wouldn't mind seeing a retired AD from one of the Big East schools taking the mantle of EAC commish and running with it.

Bob Goin would be great he is retiring from Cincy in June of 2006.
He will probably be past ful-time job status by then. He would be a great project type guy for contract or consultant type work with his FSU and UC extensive buildings, contract negotiating, and with conference expansion experience etc. Bob may just want to
spend most of the time with the family in Florida.

Someone mentioned the old AD of Syracuse, I think he would be a great choice.

Please no. That old cook is not interested in changing with the times. He definitly would not be able to put these bowl deals together the way trangheese has been able to do.

The Geese is trying to posistion things to prevent a breakoff. It won't work. Best candidate for Commish of the new EAC = Oliver Luck. Ran NFL Europe for a while after running the Frankfurt Galaxy. Rhodes Scholar from WVU and hell of a nice guy.

I don't think there is any question of a split in the next few years. The BE led by the Pitt and WV chancelor put wording in that 2008 (?) would be the year that schools could split without any punitive penalties.

In addition, having only 8 teams in a conference is hell for scheduling. There will not be another team admitted until the split occurs.

The only wish I have when the split happens is that the new 9 team football conference is an ALL SPORTS conference. This 16 team BE conference is weird as rivalries are very hard to happen through years of playing each other in every sport.

2008 would be the first year we could add a 9th team without penalty, then le's hope we split then.

My fear in this matter is that in two yrs BE hoops is going to be producing more revenue then any other conference in that particular sport, and if no non BCS school east of the mississippi makes a Louisville or Boise-like rise the football schools will say why mess with a good thing? If any expansion teams are needed Army or Navy or both can come in for football only...I can see something like that happening in my mind's eye easily

Jackson, we have to make sure the BE keeps the BCS status. That is why Louisville joined the BE!

- Jackson1011 - 08-12-2005 09:52 PM

Oh I agree Wilkie.....but I think that issue is settled for now

-- What I am concerned about is that if BE hoops is so successful and produces so much money ( coupled with the lack of a quality potential 9th all sports member) that certain footbal schools will be satisfied with staying in the 16 team league, collect the big bball check and if more football members are needed then look to the acadmies to fill out the football side. I could see Uconn and Syracuse and maybe Rutgers being swayed by such an argument

Jackson, I think ;

UConn
Syracuse
Louisville
Cincinnati
Memphis

are all teams that would receive annual NCAA seeds! Pittsburgh and West Virginia both have solid programs and could get asked to the dance as well. Rutgers and South Florida's basketball needs work!

But Jackson, I think the conference I just mention woud get 5 or 6 bids most year.

- Jackson1011 - 08-12-2005 10:13 PM

Again...I agree my friend....but will Memphis or ECU's football programs be of such high quality that the football schools will have no choice but split and exand again?I think the status of there football programs will be one of the deciding factor
