Basketball - Home and Home Series with UMass - Steve1981 - 07-02-2011 10:34 PM

Hoping for a good home and home series. With Dec 6th being Tuesday ,will not think about traveling to Greenville. In the Army shared a room with a guy from South Carolina, who had a football scholarship to ECU in the mid 70’s until he injured his knee. At the time did not realize how big it was to have a scholarship with East Carolina. Anyhow he did talk me into going Airborne with him and did enjoy NC during the late 70’s. Now know about East Carolina, great FBS Football program and good in basketball, so it should be a challenging game for us.

Wish you the best this coming football season especially with the AQ teams.

Should make for a good one IMO.

Only really skeptical as this is the first time seeing it and I would have figured it would have gotten scooped by two other ECU sites I go to.

Can not post on the rivals site in this thread, PiratesIllustrated, will respond to some of the football related dissing.

North Carolina and many states are larger than Massachusetts and share Division 1 Sports with multiple directional or city named Universities. UMass and Massachusetts is very different as only the flagship has Division 1 Basketball, Football, Lacrosse, Softball, Field Hockey, and Rowing. It was fairly recently, 2003 that Lowell Tech, Boston State, and Southeastern Massachusetts where renamed UMass-Lowell, UMass-Boston, and UMass-Dartmouth, plus UMass Medical in Worcester and the flagship UMass in Amherst.

When I talk to a Lowell Tech graduate, he will say that he is from UMass as well, but it’s Lowell and does that count. My reply is sure we are all UMass, especially with sports. The union is still fairly new and recently even the “University of Massachusetts Club” is opening up to all campuses. There is synergy combining the five schools under the UMass umbrella with only the flagship having Division 1 Sports. We are just starting to hit critical mass financially and making in roads political with a new law school. Our current Chancellor Holub, who have tremendous respect, had unfavorable information by the Board of Trustees leaked to the Boston Globe. (The Board of Trustees are political and not pro UMass.) Years ago he would be gone by now, but alumnus have written to their legislators. We are a small state and just now hitting a half billion in endowment.

The point is we are not like other states, there is only one UMass proudly wearing the state name on our jerseys.

This is mostly football related. We are just starting transitional FBS football and will not be AQ ready for a decade. However the reason you see some former rivals mention us is our history. We play in the same league as some Big East teams in Hockey and the same can be said for Syracuse in Lacrosse. We played in the same football league as UConn and Villanova. We played in the same conference as Rutgers, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Villanova in basketball. Even Penn State was a former member of the A10. We do have lots of history with these schools and many others.

When I went to the Murphy Center trophy case I saw a old football that said 1963 Tangerine Bowl U. Maine 0 East Carolina 31. It was a signature with all of the ECU players I believe and was very old looking

Thanks Purple n Gold and have seen the old footballs a few time, but focused more on the basketball A10 Championships and the other stuff on the third floor of the Mullins. Have always like how Boston College put their showcase with the Heisman etc in the concourse and kind of wish we did that as well.

Really believe you guys belong in the Big East with your attendance and being in a beautiful part of the country.


Regarding the basketball home and home, expect to be a good series. Hoping we will be stronger than most people expect and our new point guard, Chaz Williams stays healthy. He did pretty well as a freshman for Hofstra. We will be getting a solid test at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

In a way I do think we belong but I think we will be passed over and we will have to wait out some more years to be in a BCS conference. Thanks Steve and I might go to some ECU basketball games this year. I have never been to one. Just Baseball and Football

Well the game is getting closer. Losing big to College of Charlseton makes me extremely nervous about this game. We play Miami on the road and wondering if we stay on the road and practice locally in NC. Miami game is on ESPNU on Saturday, 1 PM. Cheers to a good game.

Pirate fans have any opinions on Neal Brown as a football HC.

Looking forward to the game. You guys look to have a solid team this year outside of that CofC game and should give Miami a run for their money tomorrow.

Thanks igoe4EC, have resgister and have DVR the Miami game and off to Keene, NH for various things. Will post later. You guys have a lot of sites. Added yours and click on 'Collection of Sports links' in my signature. Had a day course on Oracle's Apex and discovered had access to a free database and wanted to use it. Don't know if anybody uses, but it helps me with old links and love the filters. You can uncheck any and etc. Take care need to go.

Well Tuesday coming and time to know a little about us. Pre-season A10 coaches poll picked us 12 out of 14 teams. Should finish better than that as Chaz Williams, a transfer from Hostra is a leading point guard.
