What is going on with Iowa Football? - MajorHoople - 01-25-2011 07:06 PM

12 Hawkeyes hospitalized for undisclosed reasons.

Hope it's nothing serious. Last few years Iowa seems to be in the news as much for off-field as on.

Whinny, care to shed any light?

Exertional Rhabdomyolysis, their muscle tissue broke down and the contents of the muscle fibers entered the blood stream.

Just came on to post the link, but I see that Tommyboy beat me to it. ;-)

The first indication that something was wrong was when players started passing brown urine. This followed some intense (but not unusual) voluntary off-season workout sessions. The University Hospitals and Clinics are among some of the best in the nation, so the players will be in good hands. Message board chatter has it that this particular workout involved 100 squats followed by sled work.

And yes, Major Hoople, there has been off the field negativity involving the Hawkeyes. It's not that we have more athletes making bad decisions than other schools do......Iowa just doesn't sweep it under the rug. I'm proud of that, and proud that our athletes are held accountable for their actions.

Fair enough, and well-stated, Whinny.

Might want to hold the coaches acccountable for their actions as well. No way should a healthy athlete work so hard that he has to be hospitalized.

Wussification of America

One feels like work out is too hard and crys to the trainers and mommy then can sit out workouts. More piss ants see this and are wusses too and join the bandwagon. Notice that the players were freshman and walk-ons...... Coaches and trainers can't tell these kids to suck it up anymore and have to follow the Wussification of America way.

F-ing Cun................ts

Holy cow. They have meds for that, you know?

Quote:All 13 players remain hospitalized, and Dr. Stokes stated that “a few days… a week would be a reasonable expectation” before the players are released.

Being hospitilized for a week is not an indication of "wussification."

Wow, these players have had their muscle tissue break down because of over exertion and are in danger of kidney failure because of it and they're wusses? Let's see you go out and do what they were doing and see what happens. From my link:
Quote:rhabdomyolysis is often suffered by people who have experienced traumatic muscle injuries like car accidents or being crushed in an earthquake. However, it can be caused by extreme exercise combined with poor hydration

If anything they may have been trying to prove how tough they were by not drinking enough. No matter the cause, coaches everywhere need to ensure that players are properly hydrated during workouts.

Just saw this topic today.

We'll see how things turn out, but it's HIGHLY LIKELY that a dietary supplement or some other foreign substance played a role in this.

Hmmmm. A fly in the ointment or an ointment on the fly? Wonder what the investigation will find and what will be announced publicly.

Iowa needs a PR guy in their athletic department. 13 players are in a hospital for a week. This isn't some overnight "Oh, they're dehydrated, give them an IV and send them home in a few hours" it's a "People have died from this, you may have renal failure, and you'll be hopefully released in a week."

So, come the press conference, there's no President, no AD, no $4 million per year head coach. It's the S&C coach who wasn't supervising the workouts, one of the dad's, and a doctor who isn't actually treating the players. That'll go over well.

This is the same Sports Information Department that had the whole thing with one guy being booted for drugs turn into "the entire team is on crack" before they reacted there, too. Not impressive for the last few months.

Five of the 13 were to be released by today. Two are still on dialysis. All are expected to recover.

This kind of thing DOES happen, you know. Rhabdomyolysis is frequently seen in boot camp recruits in the military. Here is another well-publicized instance of athletes being affected:

Lot's of bad things happen, doesn't make it right. Even so, you'd think that the head coach would be out in public since he is the face of the program. Looks like he's in hiding.

More likely on the road recruiting. It's crunch time.

Yep. Ferentz was across the country at the time, holding final scheduled home visits with recruits and their parents. Still, he was in constant contact with his sick players back home, their families, and the doctors at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. There's nothing else he could have done, even if he'd been in Iowa City.

He could have been there firing the knucklehead who abused the kids he recruited previously badly enough to put them in the hospital and with them in person.
