Basketball - Next Season - DetroitRocket - 01-09-2011 12:53 PM

I just hope Coach K is right about the three redshirts that are sitting out this year. He has said many times how high he is on them. One concern has to be that one of the players averaged under 2 points per game at his last school and another just over 3.

Having to count on some unproven true freshmen from the 2011 class is also a crap shoot. Usually if a couple pan out you're doing well. No doubt we need some outside shooters. I think that the one remaining scholarship will be used for next season because of our needs in the paint.

Considering how bad the team has been lately, you have to wonder how tough it is for Coach K to get quality players to even consider Toledo.

Still hopeful.

Definitely no Jay Gasts, Tim Selgos, Larry Coles, Larry Jones, Ted Williams, etc. out on the floor for the Rockets right now.

RE: Basketball - Next Season - cnyrocketfan - 01-09-2011 01:30 PM

Does anyone know anything about next season's non-conference schedule? Any teams from this year's schedule UT is contracted to play next season or any new schools or early season tournaments anyone's heard about?

Thoughts about schools you'd like to see on the Toledo schedule are also welcome. I do think they could go a little easier next year. I don't like to see NAIA schools on the schedule (no more Indiana Northwest type of games) but I don't think overscheduling is helpful at this stage of rebuilding the program either.

Longwood? SUNY Binghamton? Or are schools like that going down too far?

We can do with what we have for now, once the recruits start to play they will have to earn their spot, and fight with the ones playing now. Game time and experience is key. I expect 4 or 5 of the 9 we have now to play next year. The others will be really fighting with others for game time.

RE: Basketball - Next Season - Rocket75 - 01-09-2011 02:18 PM

Sources tell me that Buckley is the best player on the team and that Coach K loves the work ethic and upside of the two players he brought with him. Sitting out this year will help all 3. The players playing this year will likely just play roles for the next few years. They will add to our depth but not be "go to" guys.

RE: Basketball - Next Season - Dwight - 01-09-2011 02:30 PM

No chance that four or five of this year's players will get time next year. Holiday and Dear will get time. I would say a third is unlikely, a fourth extremely unlikely. By getting time I mean averaging over five minutes per game. My bet is that at least one of this year's scholarship players will leave after the season, possibly after being urged to do so by the coach. DetroitRocket, I agree that we should temper our expectations for next year. In fact, we really don't know what to expect. If we're an average MAC team next year, I would be thrilled. For those who were predicting that we would challenge for the MAC West this year, I guess you're a little quieter after yesterday.

RE: Basketball - Next Season - UofToledoFans - 01-09-2011 02:49 PM

The Valpo game still tells me that the MAC west leader is not very good and we can compete.
And by all people who do not follow UT basketball they tell me that Griffin is the best player. I have had multiple friends go to games and tell me that he looks like the only D1 player on our team. I think that dear/holliday/Griffin and maybe Thomas will all get +5 minutes next year.

Would not be surprised to see two players be advised to transfer out... Next year should be an upgrade talent-wise, but lacking that legitimate inside threat to complement D. Dear, will come back to be UT's achilles heel...

RE: Basketball - Next Season - IamN2daRockets - 01-09-2011 05:52 PM

I see Dear, Holliday, Griffen, and Humes all getting minutes next year.

Dear has a decent upside if he can develop a shot facing the bucket. At present he can only score on RH side jump hooks and lay-ups. Holliday is a gamer. Humes cannot catch the ball and is severely limited relative to scoring. He has a real problem controlling the ball. This is a huge liability and was a knock coming out of high school. The staff must get him on a special work-out schedule in the off-season that emphasizes ball handling and catching skills. However, he plays hard and is coachable. He is also respectful of the staff.

J T Thomas is a complete bust in my opinion. He adds almost nothing to the offense and is severely limited defensively and cannot break the press. I cannot see how he will get any minutes with Buckley, Brown, Mathew coming into camp. I think Shunnar is a better player than JT. I still see Shunnar on the roster for next season.

My projected top 14 UT players for 2011-2012 are (in order):

Buckley 1
Pearson 2/3
Dear 5
Griffin 2
?????? 4/5
Majerle 3
Moss 4
Brown 1
Smith 3/4
Holliday 3
Humes 4
Mathew 1/2
Shunnar 2
Leahy 2
Wonnell 5

Hopefully UT will still sign a decent "big" (?????) for 2011-12 that will jump into the top five of the list. However, the staff may wait till last year to sign another player.

Go Rockets!

RE: Basketball - Next Season - H2Oville Rocket - 01-09-2011 06:50 PM

Interesting, Detroit. I hasd the same thought- Pearson certainly came on at the end of the year last year and looks much more athletic than anyone we have on this year's roster. In the couple practices I've watched he and Buckley were the best players out there. Smith was hard for me to judge- if he has any sort of mid-range game he'll help and we can certainly use an athletic defender. I keep reminding myself that Coach K thought enough of them to bring them along with hima nd that they'll have another year in his system under their belts but I keep seeing 3 PPG in my mind's eye.

What year is he? Isn't he a freshman? How many DI college teams rely on a freshman to direct their offense? Even "breaking the press" takes more than one player. A freshman trying to find another freshman to pass to?

Seems harsh.

RE: Basketball - Next Season - San Giuseppe Jato Rocket - 01-09-2011 09:44 PM

I agree Dear, Holliday, Griffin, and Humes will all continue to be solid contributors next year and thereafter.

What we need is a serious 3-point range threat. Until someone starts lighting it up for the arc, I expect we'll see A LOT of zone defense from opposing teams.

RE: Basketball - Next Season - UofToledoFans - 01-09-2011 10:27 PM

There are alot of good shooters out there. We need someone like Justin Ingram. Great shooter, good dribbler, great defender.

RE: Basketball - Next Season - pono - 01-10-2011 02:18 AM

pierson will be a good player for us. he's not a pure shooter, but he's a great athlete, competitor and leader. one of those athletic swingmen types who won't have a lot of plays run for him but will score in transition, off rebounds, cuts, etc... and play solid defense. think robierre cullars without the goofyness.

dear is a nice talent. he's getting a load this yr playing center at his weight. however, he can face and shoot and do a lot more in transition and at a forward position. if we beef up the interior and other guys fill that post role he will become more of a forward.

marjerle is having a great start to his sr year and is getting some mr. basketball attention. may end up like stempin as one of those guys who looked like a good mid major recruit as a hs jr, signed early and then emerged as high major talent his sr yr of hs. the fact that he is a good shooter will help him see minutes next yr as we are really lacking for outside shooters.

and, yeah, the emu debacle tempered my enthusiasm a bit, but i think coach k will get these guys back on track and competitive soon.

Agree. I wonder how much the road trip and accompanying discipline issues affected the play Saturday. I sure hope SOMETHING affected the play Saturday.

east:

Maybe "complete bust" is too hard on the kid. My apology. He is only 18 or 19.

However, I do go to all the games and see very little potential coming from this kid. His shooting skills are minimal. he would have to completely develop new shooting skills in order to provide any offense. I do not see this happening. He may become a better defensive player. D is teachable. I would like to see all kids succeed. Overall, I will still stick with my assessment that he will have little or no impact on UT's basketball future as compared to other incoming players. I am simply ranking their futures as I see them. And my insight is basically worthless except for making conversation on this board - and that is why we are all here to begin with!

Go Rockets!

Last two PGs I can think of who were last minute signees were Bastfield and Wade. We scored big on one, not so much on the other. Given Thomas' injury I'd say the jury is out but there's a lot of room for improvement. More Bastfield than Wade so far. With Brown coming in and Griffin showing the ability to man the point I don't see minutes in JT's future without that major improvement.

Shooting is teachable as well, the only difference is in my experience coaching, is that the shot % will go down for a while when the player is adjusting to the new release. Teaching D on the otherhand tends to have immediate impacts on improving the player, without a dip.

RE: Basketball - Next Season - H2Oville Rocket - 01-10-2011 01:28 PM

Don't know if anyone noticed but A J Mathews and his entire HS team was at the Eastern game Saturday. Looks like he has decent size - a couple other guys on the team were pretty big for high schoolers. I think there's another D1 type player on the team?

RE: Basketball - Next Season - IamN2daRockets - 01-10-2011 01:43 PM

JT is a brick layer at present so i would hate to see his temporary down side while he is learning his new Rick Mount/Bob Mcadoo/David Thompson release
