Thor: The Dark World / BR
--I love this movie way more than the 1st one. Those Dark Elves were just creepy.

Machete Kills / BR
--After a second viewing, first being the theater, I like it more after a second time. That said, it is inferior in every way to the first Machete. Maybe Rodriguez can get Machete Kills Again back up to being on par with the 1st one.

RoboCop(N) / Theater
--I liked how they did it but I found the basic story lines in it versus the first/original RoboCop interesting. Not sure which I prefer although I could be romanticizing my feelings towards the original trilogy. I did like who they got to play certain parts though.

Before I say this let me make it known that I am in my 40s. I saw the first RoboCop in the theaters back in 1987 and I watched this new one in the theatre. I have to admit that I liked the new RoboCop better than the original. The new one emotes more socio-political/ethical subtexts IMO than the original.

Abbie Cornish, who played Alex Murphy's wife in the new one, is smoking hot. She looks like a young Sharon Stone.

@ Bold, ya know, I can buy that.

@ Red, I'd argue they worked both but on different levels. Original was more a statement on crime prevention, 80's corruption, corporate politics, and corporate corruption as it were.... This new one kind of delved more into media spin first, social issues making the new robots necessary, and then even more so, the "what makes us human" part of the equation.

The new one had all of these things. I just think they took it to the next level.. particularly with the question of "what makes us human".

They showed the power of media spin in the first one as well, just not to the extreme of Samuel L. Jackson's character (which I thought was a bit over the top IMO, particularly the last part where was dropping F-bombs on air).

Anchorman 2 (alt cut)/ theater
--I liked some of the reworked jokes. I found the movie (v1 and v2) to be as funny as the first, even though the first felt fresher. The news team fight at the end was pretty cool with the groups they had although I think the Stonewall Jackson schtick was not needed.

RE: The movie thread - gdunn - 03-07-2014 08:37 AM

I have "Jobs" at home ready to watch.

300: Rise of an Empire/Theater
--More bad ass than the first one.......

I'm concerned that it would be too over the top to compete with the first one.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 03-23-2014 10:28 PM

42 / HBO
--finally caught that from the beginning, great movie IMO.

Archer S4/ Net Flix
--Still as funny and outrageous as ever

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe / BR
--Pretty cool fantasy movie. The BR print is pristine.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian / BR
--I honestly liked this one more than the 1st movie.

Afro Samurai 2: Resurrection / dvd
--Just a utterly cool bad ass anime with Samuel L Jackson doing the voice of Afro. Pretty cool continuation of the story line set up in the original, which was a 5 part tv series.

Nebraska with Bruce Dern, Will Forte, and Stacey Keach is definitely worth a watch.

Not a terrible flick, but not for everyone. It is in black and white and is a bit slow in developing. Bruce Dern was great as was the actress who played his wife.

The Man with the Iron Fists / BR
--Rza's directorial debut in a movie that follows his love of kung fu movies. The cinematography and the fight choreography are great. Lots of good weapons fu and hand to hand to be had all around. A decent all star cast in it too. I think any shortcomings it has would be overcome upon his second movie.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Dawn Treader / BR
--I liked the movie in terms of the cinematography and its atmosphere was a little brighter than the previous two movies. I think the annoyance of Eustice kind of sealed the deal on this movie. I also thought the guy playing Prince Caspian did a better job in this one too. FWIW, I really think they have done a good job with the three movies in the series so far so I hope they actually finish off the rest of the books.

Noah

It's easily the worst movie I've ever seen in my life. And, it's downright offensive.

Avoid this movie or you'll be pissed off they took your $10.

M16? Check!
Rock transformers? Check!
Infant murdering Noah? Check!

Not a single redeeming quality.

Horrendous.

M16s in Noah?

Rock Transformers were GoBots ( but I digress), and were still in the movie?

Yup

Yup, and if you check out the trailer they doctored many of the scenes to purposely remove the rock transformers from them.

It's a total train wreck.

The writing is horrendous, dialogue is all whispered and delivered as if it was earth shattering. "Go inside" delivered in the most over dramatic way possible.

Certain artistic and visual devices are used in a spotty fashion as if the director had heard about them once and knew enough to try to throw them in there but had no real grasp of them.

It's an Eco warrior story from start to finish, and a horrendously shot, directed, written, and delivered one at that.

After Earth. Starz

Another candidate for the worst movie ever. Will Smith in a dramatic role plays a general - FAIL! Jaden Smith (his son) plays his son - FAIL! The poor boy can't act or even enunciate properly. A double whammy since he narrates some parts of the movie. Even director M. Knight Shyamalan can't help this dog.

Saw Captain Phillips on Blu-Ray. Amazing movie...one of the best I've seen in a long time. Reaffirms my desires for a life at sea.

I loved "Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" but M. Knight jumped the shark a long time ago.

"American Hustle".. That's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.. If Jennifer Lawrence would've shown more than cleavage it probably couldn't had saved it..

the fact that christians dislike the movie so makes me think it's worth my time. aronofsky isn't your conventional film maker. pi, requiem for a dream, the wrestler, black swan. i'm not even sure how i feel about his films though. they're all pretty bleak, which is fine, but you kind of know you're going to be leaving the film saying, "damn. damn." or something like that.

we watched frozen and the hobbit whilst we babysat my friend's kid over the weekend. i didn't get to watch all of frozen as i was busy making pizza. but from what i did see, it was one of disney's darker films. the best part i missed, but was filled in when i innocently asked, "what happened to that one *****?"

i love the lord of the rings and however long they want to continue my enjoyment i'm fine with.

also watch divergent because the lady heard it was good. well that was a mistake.

Jack the Giant Slayer- HBO HD. You all know the story; it's a simple story, well told. Jack isn't a simpleton, just a bit careless as is common at his age. He's brave, but his success has a touch of luck too. The princess wants adventure, but she's not out kicking butt. There is good balance around Jack, as the knights treat him reasonably well, nothing to a ridiculous extreme love or hate.

The giants are well acted, and real threats. At times a nice bit of comic relief w/o going overboard anywhere. Effects are good throughout. A touch on the scary side. It's PG-13 and the reviews made us cautious to let my 11 y.o. see it, but afterward we thought it would probably be alright.

So, good story, good effects, good balance. It won't knock your socks off, but an enjoyable film.
