Looper BR-blind buy. Heard good things about the movie and the reviews of the transfer have been great.

Inception best buy exclusive steelbook BR

The Departed best buy exclusive steelbook BR

How is Looper? Incpetion and The Departed were excellent. If you like The Departed I highly recommend watching the "Internal Affairs" trilogy that the Departed was based on. Excellent Hong Kong cinema. The Departed basically covers the first movie in the series.

Looper was great. Definitely has some issues with time travel, that will leave your head spinning afterwards, but what movie that depends heavily on time travel doesn't leave you with unanswered questions about the effects of time travel? And the reviews of the BR disc were accurate to say the least. Beautiful transfer.

Saw Silver Linings Playbook the other day. It's a date movie but one I think everybody can enjoy. It's got the weird/funny stuff you'd expect from David O. Russell (see also I Heart Huckabees and Flirting with Disaster) but some really interesting and intense stuff that I didn't expect. Cast was good, especially Bradley Cooper and DeNiro. I didn't expect much from Jennifer Lawrence but thought she really held her own with a relatively heavyweight cast. Some other good performances from the ensemble, including Chris Tucker's. For a film that deals with such a delicate subject matter (mental illness) it was surprisingly enjoyable. Very well done.

I hadn't seen her act before but didn't have high expectations simply because I assume Hunger Games casted for appeal to their market rather than on acting chops. I was afraid she'd get dominated by her very experienced and talented co-stars. I was pleasantly surprised and she exceeded my expectations by a long shot, but Oscar-worthy? Seems like a reach.

RE: The movie thread - MTPiKapp - 01-04-2013 07:28 PM

Lawrence already has one Oscar nomination to her name for Winter's Bone and she has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Silver Linings, granted its in the comedy or musical category, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything, there's usually at least some overlap in nominations between the best actor/actress comedy or musical group at the Globes and the best actor/actress in a leading role category at the Oscars every year and Jean Dujardin(The Artist 2012), Marion Cotillard(La Vie en Rose 2008), Reese Witherspoon(Walk the Line 2007) and Jamie Foxx(Ray 2005) are all recent examples of winning the Oscar and the Golden Globe for the comedy or musical category in the same year.

I follow the award season more closely than most I suspect and most years see the majority of nominated films in theaters. I haven't seen Silver Linings yet, but will soon, and have seen most of the likely to be nominated movies already this year. The best performances I've seen from women this year have been Mirren in Hitchcock, Hathaway in Les Mis, Field in Lincoln, and Hunt in The Sessions. Of the aforementioned Mirren is the only one to have been nominated in the lead category at the Globes, so Lawrence may have the benefit of having played a leading role in a year that most of the best female performances came in supporting roles, so a nomination certainly wouldn't surprise, I doubt she wins, but two Oscar nominations at her age as a virtual unknown just a few short years ago is certainly noteworthy.

Underworld "series" / BR

1(DC)) Pretty good action and story for a Vampire/Werewolf movie. Kate is SMOKIN in the leather.

2 / Evolution) Kate is even hotter and I really enjoyed the further intrigue of the family lines.

3/ Rise of the Lyucans) Kind of a cool history lesson of the events before the start of the 1st one.

---about to watch-- 4/ Awakening.

Got the set on sale for $30 and I enjoyed the first two enough to go ahead and get the series when it was on sale a few weeks ago.

RE: The movie thread - BlazerJoe - 01-11-2013 09:11 AM

Saw Zero Dark Thirty last night; it was amazing!

RE: The movie thread - MTPiKapp - 01-11-2013 04:45 PM

Zero Dark Thirty-theater Incredibly well done. Good job suspspenseful telling of a story in which the ultimate outcome is already known. Jessica Chastain was fantastic.

Samsara-BR Anyone who is even remotely a videophile needs to seek this one out. Sort sequel to Baraka, if anyone is familiar with that one. Stunning pq.

RE: The movie thread - Motown Bronco - 01-14-2013 04:57 PM

In the past few weeks...

Finally rented Inglorious Basterds. Well done Tarantino flick.

Rented Looper. I'm a bit of a time-travel buff, so I figured I'd enjoy it, although it took me a solid 20 minutes to kind of "get into" it. I think the movie's best scenes started after he arrived at the woman's farm.

Also rented indie film Damsels in Distress, by Whit Stillman. Kind of disappointing compared to his 1990s movies (Metropolitan, Barcelona and Last Days of Disco).

I loved Inglorious Basterds. The German Detective and Brad Pitt really sell the moving in their acting of their parts. I enjoyed the banter.

Brad Pitt sucked in Inglorious Basterds. He was supposed to be from Tennessee, and he sure didn't sound like it. He sounded like an idiot from the Bronx

Very few people sound good trying to fake a southern accent. That said, what I liked about his character was his over the topness.

I can imitate almost any accent after listening to it for a while. But I was always good at languages. Obviously Brad Pitt isn't...

I wouldn't go that far, I wouldn't even say his accent in IB was that bad, it was just strange, but he was a hell of a pikey in Snatch.

Speaking of IB, Christoph Waltz was a revelation. One of less than a half dozen times I've walked out of a movie theater certain that someone had just won an Oscar(other instances: Colin Firth-The Kings Speech, Christian Bale-The Fighter, Daniel Day-Lewis-There Will Be Blood).

I didn't bother to read back that far, but did anyone see Seven Psychopaths?

I thought that movie was amazing, how can you go wrong with Walken, Rockwell, Harrellson and Farrell.

Really just a fantastic movie all around

Planet of the Apes (og) / NF Stream
--While I did like it... some of its presentations offered to me in the story line after I had seen the Mark Wahlberg remake AND Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2012) made me question some of how the story unfolds in that movie. That said, my brother said some of that gets revealed in later sequels.

Barbarella / NF Stream
--Saw it on NF and was like... WTH I'll check it out. Jane Fonda was smokin hot. Overall it was a crazy 60s/70s vibe scifi borderline soft core movie.

Fast 5 / BR
--Liked all of the movies in the series and the 'all-star" cast from the previous films made it great.

Brave / BR
--Not a bad movie and looks real good on BR. I wish they had gotten more into the story of that Mordur bear.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me / BR
--Loved the entire series really. I think the Austin vs female equivalent was a great idea.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith / BR
--I loved the banter between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in it. Pretty good blend of action and humor.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 01-19-2013 09:14 PM

Broken City / theatre
--Real good political crime drama. Good casting. I liked the depth of the plot. Don't want to say too much as they offer you new nuggets at critical parts to have you thinking in different directions.

RE: The movie thread - PirateTreasureNC - 01-23-2013 10:25 AM

On Her Majesty's Secret Service / dvd
--Lazenby only got one turn in arguably the most important Bond in that he finds his wife and she gets....

RE: The movie thread - nomad2u2001 - 02-06-2013 11:19 PM

Flight- BR

This is a pretty good movie. It's a lot deeper than a guy who crash lands a plane.
