It's easy to hate most plot driven movies out of Hollywood. The assembly line nature of Hollywood writers don't often allow for well written plots...

I thought District 9 was interesting. I don't think it was Oscar Nomination-worthy though.

The Men Who stare ate Goats

District 9
--Pretty good story there....

NEW Star Trek
--A Trek with an edge to it.... loved it.

The Informant
--I liked it.... but it was jacked up how he set himself up...

Prince of Persia

NOT BAD... liked it a lot. My only beef is what was up with all these British accents in mid-eastern setting movie? And the Princess looked way hotter than she did as Bond's red headed foil in Quantum of Solace. Those Hasassins were awesomely nasty. The action was top notch.

exactly what i thought. And yeah, she's definitely way hotter in this hair color. She was like that in Clash of the Titans.

and btw, quantom of solace, amazing movie. I was lucky to have seen it one day after watching casino royale for the first time. I was never a Bond guy and thus didn't see the latter in theaters. I really think seeing it the night before is what made me love quantom so much. I was amazed when i found out how many people didn't like it. I guess it truly is one of those situations where everyone has different tastes, because my tastebuds thought it was a flawless movie. weird how that can happen

A LOT

A LOT of Bond fans disliked QoS for the same way they didn't like License to Kill. Too dark and too edgy. I'm sorry but I totally bought Bond's revenge mission and the movie played it out well.

OF Craig's two Bond's so far I think CR is a little better than QoS but both are solid efforts.

THE FIRST TIME EVER?! INCONCEIVABLE!!!!!

This word .... I do not think it means what you think it means.

And I just saw it for the first time ever about 4 months ago. :)

Heh.... it had some good lines in it...but I never really got INTO it.

FWIW, in college English class we watched it and had to do a paper on hte book. It caused me to get my first ever Blockbuster membership to rent the video to see the movie again.

Saw "The Box" this weekend. I liked where they wanted the story to go, but I though it was horribly written. Could have been much, much better had M. Night Shyamalon performed the screenplay for it.

I thought Casino Royale was flawless. As near-perfect as a Bond movie will ever be. Quantum was solid, but let down IMO by a weak villain and the fact that Bond didn't get the girl at the end (in fairness, this happened several times in the Ian Fleming stories, but it's just a bummer in the movies). Also, while "dark and edgy" is okay to an extent, Quantum did take it a little too far to suit me. I am thinking especially of the scene where Bond puts Rene Mathis' body in the trash dumpster, and the camera just lingers on the scene, staring down with a bird's-eye-view of the dumpster. There had never been any other Bond movie -- not even Licence to Kill -- where that scene would have happened in that way.

Another thing: Does anyone else remember when the Bond theme songs were hits on the pop charts? From "Goldfinger" by Shirley Bassey to "A View to a Kill" by Duran Duran, there were several hits from the Bond movies. Some of them ("Live and Let Die," "Nobody Does It Better") became iconic in and of themselves, apart from the movie. But really, when you think back on all of the Dalton/Brosnan/Craig films, all of the music was completely forgettable.

RE: The movie thread - bitcruncher - 06-02-2010 11:30 AM

IMO Sean Connery was the REAL James Bond. Anyone else is just a poor imitation...

RE: The movie thread - Lush - 06-03-2010 04:06 PM

Watched Modern Times. This is the first Chaplin movie I've seen, and I want to see more now. A story of a lowly factory worker losing his job, getting thrown in jail, trying to get back in jail, finding love, and coping with life in the 1920's (I assume). It's funny, sweet, and charming. I see where Michael Richards gets his shtick.

RE: The movie thread - bitcruncher - 06-03-2010 06:09 PM

Modern Times is a classic. It's amazing how many gags that were first performed by Chaplin have become Hollywood staple ever since...

I grew up with Roger Moore...the real James Bond.

RE: The movie thread - bitcruncher - 06-03-2010 06:29 PM

Roger Moore was a poor substitute for the real thing...

Hmmm

I will say that Roger Moore was not Sean Connery but he had a few decent Bonds.... namely The Spy Who Loved Me and Octopussy. That said, he did do Moonraker05-nono He didn't exude that masculinity that Connery had.

IMO Connery is still tops and then I'd go with Brosnan, then Moore. Dalton was not a bad Bond but he only got two movies. So far Craig's two are pretty solid. I don't think Lazenby counts 03-razz Also, did Connery loose cool points for Never Say Never Again?
