Coleman Elementary. Class was dismissed and I remember leaving school, down the stairs and on the sidewalk. Just a kid, but it hit me that everything had changed. Very vivid memory.

Grahamwood Elementary, Mrs. Rushton's class. I remember they announced it over the PA system and the Catholic girl's screamed & I thought one was going to pass out.

I'll be glad when we get those trolleys back. When I first came back to Memphis, I stayed downtown for a minute. Just to check things out. Those Trolleys were a major hit with the tourists. Gave the city a nice feel.

Levi elementary school. Sixth grade. I took the flag down that afternoon.Teachers were all crying. It was the cold war era. I thought we were at war with Russia. Then they came on the intercom and dismissed school. The country was stolen that day.

I was too young but my brothers were in school at St. Michael’s on Summer Ave. The nuns led the student body to the church to pray. While doing so, the American flag in the church fell over. Creepy.

My good friend, Attorney and Christian Brother, David Cook, also arranged for the band to play at the 100th anniversary of the Shelby County Courthouse a few years ago. Since it was raining, they played right inside, in the southeast entrance.

Of course, most of them were in horrendous shape or gone by that time. My father owned one on Adams near MHA. It was a boarding house when he bought it, and he had hoped to improve it. The damn City took it to build a public housing highrise, but Daddy salvaged every single fine architectural detail he could, from fireplaces and mantels to stair railings and molding, and brass doorknobs. It was a crying shame, and made Daddy sick that it was torn down. The bricks from the home can still be seen at the corner of Peabody and Willett where my father built a brick wall around our home. Urban Renewal was very wrong-headed.
