You've got to remember that there wasn't air conditioning in the 19th Century in those buildings.

So the ceilings were very tall because heat rises and would rise above most everyone's heads.

Those round holes were for iron pierced grates that were placed over vent holes to allow the heat to escape during warmer weather.

This one is a interior iron register.

only had to sign my first name.

The ground was found to be unstable. I got my first card at the one on McLean.

The Memphis State/UM one...was the best. You could hang out in the stacks and nevah see a soul.
