Memphis - Military Hospital
This building is beside the Memphis Metal Museum on the Mississippi River. It is actually hid by the large, no longer occupied, military facility that you see in the background.

Holy cow the Deco inspiration on the Gayoso cards look great. I would love those in framed poster size.

Yeah; they tore down the beautiful one and kept the ugly one. Go figure!

On the other hand we managed to preserve the Old Post Office for a great use.

It's time to build beautiful buildings in Memphis again. Reviving Trinity Tower would be a great start (as would One Beale) when the economy and market revive. Add a gorgeous modern building to our skyline hodgepodge of beautiful old structures and somewhat odd boxy modern derivatives (Cannon Center is functional but the exterior is underwhelming; the same could be said for several new buildings. Nice ones include Autozone Park and Bridges' hq; I am undecided about the new Playhouse, but was surprised it didn't have a traditional marquee). I wonder what it is about design that the owners or architects seem to shrink from bold but timeless and classic architecture.

Bad drivers, it seems, have always been a problem in our city. And in the 1940s, an anonymous photographer documenting an automobile accident captured an image of a downtown street scene that no longer exists.

The old photo shows the intersection of Main and Washington, looking southeast towards the Sterick Building looming in the distance. The three-story brick building on the corner, with the Canada Dry Spur sign ("It's a finer Cola" — wow, what a lame slogan!) painted on the side, is the Jefferson Hotel.

Constructed in 1915, the hotel occupied the second and third floors of the building, and originally offered patrons a range of rooms costing from 50 cents to $1.50 a night. The proprietor, a fellow named Abraham Alperin, operated a clothing store on the ground floor and lived in the rear of his shop.

I can't find a pic, but there used to be a catfish place called The Shelby. They had an all you can eat night. I remember going as a young kid, it was delicious.

I was told that Harpos was closed down. Anybody able to verify whether this fine institution is still there?

RE: Memphis Landmarks - TJT - 08-06-2010 04:02 PM

I am pretty sure that it was shut down.

I can't find a pic either, but if it was Shelby Restaurant on Hwy 64 it burned down.
