What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - gsloth - 01-14-2010 11:29 PM Who would have thunk that the seat of the Kennedys is at risk for the Democrats? The poll numbers keep shrinking (or have disappeared in some instances) for the Democratic nominee, and now a couple of respected political pundits are calling this race a toss-up. To me, I'm thinking this is a mix of a bad campaign and some anti-national Democrat fever going on. (Sounds in many ways like the Virginia gubernatorial race in November.) But will the votes go that way in 4 days? I guess we'll have to watch and see. This is one of the bluest states in the nation, so I'm really shocked by the poll numbers. And I wonder whether this is just anti-national Democrat, or potentially bordering on anti-incumbent (of which Republicans might want to worry, too). It sounds like the Dem nominee has run a pretty bad campaign, including her gem from today to the effect that devout Catholics "probably shouldn't work in emergency rooms" (as they're against abortion and all), but still, this is MASSACHUSETTS. Odds are the Dems will pull it out in this deep-blue state, but if somehow they can't manage to "win this one for Teddy," House and Senate Dems around the country are going to think even longer and harder about their final vote on whatever health-care bill emerges. Some will decide it's a good time to retire. RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - Boston Owl - 01-15-2010 09:54 AM This is a very interesting race indeed. Massachusetts is blue, to be sure, but don't forget that the state had Republican governors continuously from 1991 to 2007. So a statewide win by a Republican would be surprising but not unprecedented. Plus Scott Brown is a hottie. Have you seen his Cosmo spread? Google it... RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - jwn - 01-16-2010 05:12 PM Now Coakley has accused Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling (he of the bloody sock) of being *GASP* a YANKEES fan. ![]() http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0110/Coakley_and_Schilling.html RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - gsloth - 01-17-2010 04:14 PM Love the gaffe about Schilling. Interesting note from another Washington Post "analysis" on the race - that about half of all Massachusetts voters are actually registered independent. For those that live (or have lived) in the state, am I to guess that independents are not barred from voting in either party's primary (i.e., open primaries)? I know some states have moved that direction. source: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/15/AR2010011504069.html Quote:By working kitchens, bars and sidewalks, however, Brown was positioned to capitalize on the rising tide of discontent at the grass-roots level over taxes, unemployment and Washington. The frustration is especially evident among independents, who account for fully half of Massachusetts voters by registration. And after repeatedly winning election to the state Senate from a district Obama won with 60 percent, Brown had experience framing a message with broad appeal. "This is a big tent, folks," he said Friday. "One thing I know you all have in common is you believe in fairness and good government." Also interesting to see that Brown keeps getting elected in a district that went 60% to Obama. Anyone familiar with the background on the district on how he got there in the first place? RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - THRILL - 01-19-2010 12:22 PM Truthfully a Brown win would be great for the country. Not just because I'm a Republican but anytime long time comfortable politicians of either party are forced to pay attention to the people its a good thing. I bet the Dems run one of Bobby or Ted Kennedy's kids when Brown comes up for re-election in a couple of years. This could be an easy take-back. RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - Owl 69/70/75 - 01-20-2010 10:14 PM "By the rude bridge that arched the flood, Their flag to April's breeze unfurled; Here once the embattled farmers stood, And fired the shot heard 'round the world." Thanks, Ralph Waldo Emerson. And thank God for Massachusetts. RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - Fort Bend Owl - 01-21-2010 06:47 AM If Brown votes straight Republican, maybe. But I bet you he doesn't - he's a talented politician who can be popular in that state if he votes like perhaps the Maine senators, Olympia Snowe or Susan Collins (moderate instead of conservative). I do think he wouldn't have won if he had run against Kennedy's widow, but from all indications his opponent in this election was a disaster. I like him reading about him at first glance. He's conservative but free minded. I also liked his daughter a lot when she was one of the final 24 on American Idol four years ago. She's a senior basketball player at Boston College now. RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - Owl 69/70/75 - 01-21-2010 07:15 AM For him to vote straight republican would require first that the republicans have a message to vote with. From what I've read I have hopes the he will vote fiscally conservative, socially moderate to liberal. I hope that is the future of the republican party--or if not, then some other party. I read something, don't remember where, that W "was not really conservative, but he wore a cowboy hat and talked about Jesus a lot." That seems pretty accurate to me, and we don't need more of that. W made people hate conservatives without actually being one himself. The bigger question is what Obama does now--move to the center like Clinton or dig in his heels like W? The country needs him to move to the center, but my guess is that he'll dig in his heels. (01-21-2010 06:47 AM)Fort Bend Owl Wrote: If Brown votes straight Republican, maybe. RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - Fort Bend Owl - 01-21-2010 07:37 AM Maybe on Obama but aren't the Democrats deciding not to force the health insurance bill through before they lose the 60 vote filibuster-proof majority? I thought I read they're going to wait now. RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - Owl 69/70/75 - 01-21-2010 07:52 AM My sense is that they realize that the frontal assault would now fail, so they are trying to figure out ways to end run the system and get as much of the current bill as possible into place. What they need to do is go back to square one, sit down with the republicans, and draft a truly bipartisan bill that marries the best ideas from this bill (end preexisting condition denials, extend coverage to more people) to the best republican ideas (tort reform, freer competition), and drops the 1800 pages or so of stuff that had no purpose except to jump start us down the slippery slope toward single-payer (the Health Choices Commission, the 200 or so other bureaucracies created, terminating the Commission on Comparative Outcomes). Obama's quick shedding of his sheep's clothing is part of the reason for this thread. I think a lot of the populist unrest is because we are tired of the old bait-'n-switch. Obama promised change, instead delivered more of the same and worse. If a third party arises, Brown could be the guy to make it happen. I really think the future for the republicans is combining fiscal conservatism with some populism, and going for the Main Street side of the Main Street-Wall Street debate. I thought Palin could have led that, but the McCain staff tried instead to force her into some sympathetic mistreated-woman box, and that not only didn't work but it also turned Palin into severely damaged goods. If the republicans don't go that way, I think the TEA party will morph into a force in that direction. And I could see Brown as the guy out in front of that. I hope to see the center of the Democratic Party merging with the center of the Republican Party and creating a dominant party, with the special interests left and right sticking with their respective old parties. Fiscal conservatism is the main thing. Wonder who the media will go with. Even Hitler can't believe it! Man, that was hilarious! Not because of any association between Hitler and Obama, but because the notion of Hitler as a disgruntled campaign supporter spouting off about current American politics is pretty funny, and because the spoof is indeed very well done. It's weird how funny Hitler images can be. I remember one two-second scene in the Simpsons, which showed the quality control at the Duff Beer bottling line. Bottles went down the line with all kinds of impurities: a syringe, a rat, Hitler's head. The depiction of Hitler's head in the Duff Beer bottling line had me laughing like crazy. Part of it is that Hitler is one of those people who looks like his own caricature, which makes him instantly recognizable. I read somewhere that Hitler is the most well-recognized non-fiction character in the history of film. RE: What's In The Water In Massachusetts? - 75src - 01-26-2010 09:19 PM The clip looks like it came from Inglorious Basterds and the German does not match the English words put on the screen. The film depicted Hitler as being the vulgar person he was. The funniest Hitler video I have seen is one on YouTube where someone drew a watermelon in a film clip of a Hitler speech where it looked like Hitler was chomping into a watermelon. I thought the Three Stooges did a better Hiltler spoof than Chaplin did. There was a short with Mo as Hiltler, Larry as Goebbels and Curly as Goering. They wound up being thrown to the lions they kept to eat political opponents. Wow, do you think anyone thought the words DID match? I mean, the words are about U.S. politics in January 2010! I guess someone, somewhere is that dumb... There was one pseudo-match: when the subtitle says "Stalingrad" just as the voice is saying "Stalin". Those are the kinds of details that make a parody really good.
