Freshman Democratic lawmaker ‘physically assaulted at a local event’ by activists. - wvucrazed - 08-05-2009 04:03 PM

These tea-bagger rallies and the staged protests at town hall meetings is a continuation of some of the out-of-control rhetoric we saw at the McCain/Palin rallies during the election.

There are pictures all over the web of right-wingers holding up signs comparing Obama to Hitler, complaining of communism, socialism, etc.

Is it any surprise that violence is starting to erupt? The right-wing noise machine is frothing up its footsoldiers to such a degree that it's getting out of control.

As lobbyist-run groups encourage conservative activists to “rattle” members of Congress at local town hall events, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), the president of the freshman Democratic class has revealed that “at least one freshman Democrat” has already been “physically assaulted at a local event.” Connolly warned that conservative groups had taken things to a “dangerous level“:

“When you look at the fervor of some of these people who are all being whipped up by the right-wing talking heads on Fox, to me, you’re crossing a line,’ Connolly said. ‘They’re inciting people to riot with just total distortions of facts. They think we’re going to euthanize Grandma and the government is going to take over.”

Recent events have given congressman good reason to be “fearful for their safety.” Last week, a protester hung an effigy of freshman Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) outside his district office, and after a June 22 town hall meeting was disrupted by an “unruly mob” of tea party activists, Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY) had to be escorted to his car by police. ThinkProgress contacted Connolly’s office regarding the identity of the congressman who was physically assaulted, but we have not yet received a response."

It doesn't say who was assaulted. It just makes a random claim. Is there any link to info on the actual assault?

I think it is funny that this dimocrat decided to attack Fox over this "conservative movement".

And yes...we are headed toward Socialism, whether you see it or not, wvucrazed.

is this the kind of political discourse you folks are proud of?

TOWN HALLS GONE WILD: In one incident of right-wing outrage, protesters surrounded Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY), forcing police to escort him to his car. In another, anti-health care protesters hung up an effigy of Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) outside his district office in Salisbury, MD. The city was the site of a recent symposium on the dangers of "government-run health care," sponsored by a group called "Patients First," a project of AFP. Two nights ago, Reps. Steve Kagen (D-WI) and Steve Driehaus (D-OH) had to face down angry mobs. Kagen, whose town hall was targeted by the Wisconsin chapter of AFP, was "repeatedly disrupted" by "incomprehensible" shrieks and shouts from conservatives. And just last night, Fox's local Houston affiliate reported that at a rowdy town hall hosted by Rep. Gene Green (D-TX), some attendees admitted "they don't live in the district." Still, Democrats are vowing not to let the disruptions stop health care reform. "I hope my colleagues won't fall for a sucker-punch like this," Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) told The Progress Report. "These health insurance companies and people like them are trying to load these town halls for visual impact on television." Doggett agreed. After his town hall was ambushed he declared, "I am more committed than ever to win approval of legislation to offer more individual choice to access affordable health care. An effective public plan is essential to achieve that goal." And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) promised Democrats wouldn't waiver: "In spite of the loud, shrill voices trying to interrupt town hall meetings and just throw a monkey wrench into everything, we're going to continue to be positive and work hard." http://www.thecherrycreeknews.com/content/view/4996/2/

Yeah, we never saw anything like that w/ Bush!

Quote: complaining of communism, socialism, etc.

Yeah, what kind of nutjob would compare gov't owned auto manufacturing, and state-controlled healthcare w/ socialism?! That's crazy talk!

And I care because?

Oh, here's the part where you report me to the gov't b/c I don't think like you.

You think it appropriate for a pissed off conservative to assault a lawmaker? I'd think you wouldn't want to be associated w/ that kind of behavior.

I hope you folks realize that this kind of craziness is going to end up backfiring. These orchestrated protests and the ugly scenes are going to eventually become a major news story and it is only going to make your side look like intolerant thugs unable to rationally debate the issues.

Where was the left's outrage over civil disobedience when they feel a minority got the short end of the stick? Where was the left's outrage over the war protests, be they Viet Nam, Gulf 1 and 2? Where was the left's outrage when union strikes turn violent and deadly?

This just goes to show that the left thinks they have a monopoly on making their voices heard while shouting down any and all oppostion.

Let's just assume for a second you are correct - is it your position that "the other side does it too, so we can"? Two wrongs make... two wrongs.

As for violence at union strikes - - as a son of a union coal miner who retired a couple years back after 37 years, I know all about that. Nobody I know condones it.

The anti-war protests I have seen were peaceful and sounded nothing like this. I don't recall an instance where lawmakers had to be escorted by security to their vehicles to avoid a crazed mob.

wvucrazed,

You mean to tell me that you never saw an effigy of Bush. Why is it Free Speech for the lefty loonies? Bush was assaulted by a shoe throwing Iraqi, and you guys laughed about it and put up animated computer games making fun of Bush. Remember, Then the shoe (no pun intended) is on the other foot and it's righteous indignation. Until all the facts are known, and all the speech has been calibrated, I expect someone to play the race card any time now. I say its too soon to make a call.

This is all just a smoke screen to take the conversation off the real subject, what the people are mad as hell about.

wvucrazed,
Your eyes have been permanently closed. You are in the Matrix.

By using that arguement the left gets to protest all they want and when conservatives do it you say two wrongs don't make a right. Either way, you win, I lose. Slick.

If this guy was assaulted, he should press charges. I'm sure that with the current administration, the charges will be dropped by the AG Holder, just like in the Black Panther voter intimidation case. No way would this administration raise a double standard like that. [/sarcasm]

Can you say "SET UP" ???

OK, let me go to down to the Hood, give some Homies $20 bucks a piece.

See those guys carrying signs outside of Congressman Hank Johnson's (D-Ultra-Liberal/Socialist- Georgia) Office? Go up to them and chase them off and scare the crap out of them.

They do it and people run like hell, claiming terrorism.

I'm set up with a video cam 75 yards away making it a Kodak Moment.

I promise the video will be with G. Gordon Liddy, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, and Rush Limbaugh within 3 hours.

Two can play that game.

Well, the race card is well-played already. Have you seen some of the pictures of these tea-bag rallies? There were plenty of racist signs. So I'm sure that the non-racist tea-baggers were all disgusted and outraged by those, weren't they? Probably marched up to these few bad seeds and made them take their signs, right? Errr, yeah. Not likely.

So don't pretend there isn't a racial element to this.

As for Bush. Yeah, the criticism of him was relentless. Yeah, he did get a shoe thrown at him. But when Bush spoke it was always with a hand-picked crowd of loyalists, and I don't remember any crazy groups of angry liberals trying to disrupt town-meetings and mobbing local politicos.

The atmosphere out there is getting very ugly.
