Insight into why Cal left???? - Wallstreet58 - 05-14-2009 03:18 PM

This is a quote Cal gave to the Kentucky media yesterday. The entire article is also linked.

"My time will be spent on recruiting and coaching," he said. "The greatest thing about being here is I can do that. I don't have to fund-raise. Get this one: I don't have to sell tickets. Can you imagine?"

Well, that's an OBVIOUS reference to Memphis. Sorry we were such a headache for you, Cal! 01-wingedeagle

kentucky has a basketball program?

RE: Insight into why Cal left???? - RoyBoy1978 - 05-14-2009 03:25 PM

He even said that he envisioned Justin Timberlake at the Commonwealth for a Kensucky b-ball game.

I think he has forgotten that Memphis is Justin Timberlake's team.

I'm not going to lie, that is like a punch to the gut.

I'm thinking the Kentucky job will still come with plenty of PR responsibilities. Plus, I don't think ticket sales were a problem the past few years. He helped build Memphis to that point. I give him credit for that. But I know next season would've been full of hard sell outs. I plan on being in the stands for every game next year anyway. Go Tigers.

yea, I'm sorry that his nine years here were such a burden for him. if that is the case, perhaps he should feel free to stay out of the city from now on instead of coming to "visit" every week or so. we wouldn't want to make his life any worse than it already is.

jeez, that dude is a joke.

Ok, thanks for posting, but I swear this is absolutely THE LAST link I ever click with anything to do with our former coach. Not only did he disrespect our program the way he left it for dead, but now the insults are flying. I'm done with him.

If JT shows up at a Kentucky game he must be disowned. Don't know who our new celeb fan would be. Maybe Jerry Lawler?

Thought I'd help tweak the thread title a little. 03-wink

he didnt have to "sell tickets" here. Put a winning team on the court and people will support you. Took him 5 years to realize that. hope he has fun coaching in that dilapidated sh!thole. Its no FEF!!

03-confused How are you gonna' do that? You didn't start this thread.

Maybe he needs to remember his last year in the NBA. I think they had him tearing tickets, not selling them. He also made the popcorn and swept the gym floor. Sorry we gave you a chance to build up our program, which you had to do to re-build your own reputation. What a punk.

RE: Insight into why Cal left???? - herkermer - 05-14-2009 03:39 PM

Really? I guess calling Fred Smith to buy the last 300 upstairs tickets... so he could get his bonus for another sold our season ticket campaign was just too tough for him. what a self indulging prick he has turned out to be... OK, I feel better!

I read that article in it's entirety. And now I feel like I need a break. I need a break from it all. I need to take a month or whatever and put college basketball out of my mind. That was a tough pill to swallow err read.

Read the thread title in his specific post, and in the one where you quoted him. And in this one.

RE: Insight into why Cal left???? - TigerBCL - 05-14-2009 03:40 PM

A little over 5 years ago he couldn't get 12,000 people into the Forum for a game against our biggest rival with a NCAA bid on the line. The only thing I figure that changed between then and his last game here was his recruiting and coaching which led to him winning at the level that was expected for what he was getting paid. If he is stupid enough to think that all he has to do is coach and recruit at Kentucky then he won't last long. It probably requires more PR and @$$ kissing than any other job in the country. If that job was just about recruiting and coaching then Billy Gillespie would still be there.

RE: Insight into why Cal left???? - Crush_em'_All - 05-14-2009 03:44 PM

I think the loss in the National Championship Game really scarred him. It took part of his soul, and I don't think he ever recovered. I know I haven't, so imagine what he feels. He went for a new beginning.
I also believe that he was sick of not getting respect because of being in C-USA, and now that he is in Kensucky everyone is praising and talking about him and he hasn't even coached a game. He was an underdog just like us throughout his life and still is. He now has to put on a fake persona now that he is at Kensucky. I still think he is a sellout, and a punk
b!tch, but he was OUR couch for nine years and what a hell of a ride it was!!

But Cal knew about the need to sell tickets when he got here. That what was part of the job. Talking down Memphis is not going to help Kentucky do anything. He's only digging his grave because if he doesn't back up the talk, he won't be able to use any of his 'built in' excuses.
