SoB's instrumental in getting Philly's MLS team - EPJr - 06-23-2009 10:15 PM

http://www.sonsofben.com/

The Sons of Ben (SoB) is an independent fan club for the Philadelphia Major League Soccer (MLS) team. The Sons of Ben group was created in January 2007 by soccer fans from Philadelphia and its greater metropolitan area, using such existing MLS fan clubs as the Screaming Eagles, Empire Supporters Club, La Barra Brava, Texian Army, and Section 8 Chicago as models. The name of the club alludes to Benjamin Franklin, who was one of the most well known Founding Fathers of the United States and a particularly iconic figure of Philadelphia.
Bryan James, Andrew Dillon, and Dave Flagler founded the Sons of Ben supporters club on January 17, 2007, Benjamin Franklin's birthday. Philadelphia soccer fan, Ethan Gomberg, suggested the name. SoB is the first Philly MLS supporters club. The club uses the colors blue and gold, from Philadelphia's city flag, but may assume the official team colors when they are announced.

The Sons of Ben began during a flurry of rumors regarding Major League Soccer's negotiations with investors regarding a team located in the Philadelphia region. The group has more than 2,500 members and ran a season ticket drive, attracting 2,800 requests. Both state and county governments have agreed to partially fund the Rivertown project along the banks of the Delaware River in Chester, Pennsylvania. This mixed-use development will be anchored by a 20,000-seat soccer-specific stadium (Chester Stadium) just south of the Commodore Barry Bridge. On February 28, 2008, Philadelphia was confirmed to be the league's 16th team, meaning that their initial goal has been accomplished. The Sons of Ben refocused their efforts on the most important mission of any supporters club: supporting the local team. The team will begin play in 2010.

At the "Meet the Owners" event held two days before the official MLS press conference in Chester, the Sons of Ben wore nametags with handwritten numbers intended to read 2010. The number was mistakenly interpreted as "ZOLO" by team co-owner Nick Sakiewicz. This led to the Philadelphia MLS team being referred to as the "Zolos" in a series of inside jokes by the group. The Philadelphia MLS team's ownership group, Keystone Sports & Entertainment LLC, designed a specific entrance and a 2,000-seat section of Chester Stadium for the Sons of Ben in recognition of their loyalty.

2,000 seats section for Sons of Ben Supporters Group is sold out

http://a1135.g.akamai.net/f/1135/182...Davis_Podcasts

According to Nick (Philly CEO and co-owner), the SoB supporters' section (2,000 strong) is already sold out. Other stuff from the Glenn Davis Podcasts:

* Sons of Ben had an influence on the Union colors and crest and likely the "Join or Die" phrase in latin.
* Sons of Ben get their own entrance on the North East side of the stadium.
* Sons of Ben get their own 2,000 seat section which they will control, separate from other sections.

The supporters section (its back to the river) will be 2000 strong and only those signed up the Sons of Ben will get tickets. $125 discount on season ticket will be worth it to the team owners. It costs $125 more to seat at the other endline. I believe the awesome atmosphere created will help with ticket sales and give the team a true home field advantage.

Philadelphia will introduce Peter Nowak as its first head coach at a press conference on Friday, sources with knowledge of the hire told Soccer By Ives on Wednesday. Nowak, the only man to ever win an MLS Cup as a player and head coach, is leaving his post as U.S. national team assistant coach to take over as head coach for the Union, which is set to begin play in 2010.

Henry openly pondering move to.....NY!!!!!

La Liga - Henry: MLS move is possible
Eurosport - Fri, 26 Jun 14:08:00 2009

Thierry Henry could move to the USA after his Barcelona contract expires in 2011.

The France striker impressed last season as the Catalan club won an unprecedented treble but is still being linked with a return to England in light of a disappointing debut 2007-08 campaign.

But the former Arsenal man, 31, insisted that he would rather stay at Barca for two more seasons before making his decision, which could involve a move to North America.

"Could I play for New York at some point? It could be possible in 2011," he said at a promotional event in New York.

"One never knows, but the truth is that it is an option that could be likely.

"I want to stay with Barcelona for two more seasons and then I will leave."

Montreal bids for a 2011 MLS expansion spot - EPJr - 06-26-2009 10:00 PM

Montreal Impact owner Joey Saputo is determined to get his club into Major League Soccer by 2011, and there are signs that MLS might be willing to accommodate his request, ESPNsoccernet has learned.

"I'm trying to push for 2011," Saputo said. "I feel very, very comfortable that we'll be ready. We've spoken about that with the [MLS] commissioner [Don Garber], and he understands that."

Vote for the 2009 MLS All-Star team

Baring a remarkable turnaround, Kasey Keller will be the fans' choice to start in goal for the MLS All-Stars against Everton of the English Premier League at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah on July 29 at 9:30 p.m.
The Seattle Sounders FC standout is comfortably ahead of Pat Onstad of the Houston Dynamo and it also appears clear that Keller will be joined by many of his Sounders teammates on the fans' First XI with eight among the leading vote-getters.

But there are some races that appear to be going down to the wire as the fan voting heads into the final two weeks. Still, the fan vote doesn't mean those players will be in the actual starting XI. That decision will be made by the coaching staff of the MLS All-Stars. The current top 11 vote-getters also do not factor in the balloting from the other three voting bodies (media, players, and coaches/GMs).

VOTE NOW!

The Seattle-Portland heated soccer rivalry continues... - EPJr - 06-30-2009 09:32 AM

The Seattle-Portland heated soccer rivalry continues Wednesday when Sounders FC plays a U.S. Open Cup match in Portland against a familiar foe, the Timbers.

The mudslinging began in earnest early this month, when Sounders FC and the Portland Timbers of the lower-tier United Soccer Leagues First Division found themselves on a collision course for a third-round match in the U.S. Open Cup soccer tournament.

When Portland won its second-round match two weeks ago, the rivalry had returned — Portland versus Seattle on the pitch once again.

Montreal Supporters - UM02 - EPJr - 06-30-2009 10:26 AM

The Montreal Impact have one of the most vocal groups of supporters in the USL First Division, the UM02, which stands for Ultras Montréal. The group was created in 2002, after the re-opening of the Montréal Impact, when a group of fans decided to bring organized and vocal support to Impact games. Their slogan is "Toujours Fidèles" which is French for Always Faithful. The UM02 is the subject of much animosity by the rival Rochester Stampede. The UM02 are located in the bottom half of section 114, the designated supporters section.
