Benton - LB 3 star

RE: CMU get another big FB Commit - chipfan - 10-20-2008 02:52 PM

This will be the best recruiting class ever for CMU. There are currently 4 Three Star recruits and a balanced class heading to Mt Pee.

CMU has traditionally made do with projects and players who had few, if any, offers from other schools. Kind of scary to think what may happen when some sought after recruits start showing up. 04-cheers

Only 4 three star recruits? I've heard a lot about this class being so good, and thought there would be more. At least a few MAC schools have been bringing in 5 or more three star recruits for a few years now.

I know, stars don't always mean anything. Looking at Toledo's radar list, four prospects just dropped from 3 stars to 2 stars......probably because they are not receiving as much BCS interest as initially thought and other 2 star players are committing to BCS schools and getting bumped to 3 star players ahead of them.

By the way, Shamari Benton is a heck of a player and a really nice kid. I've interviewed him a few times for Rocket Digest and he's a class act that doesn't believe in the BCS hoopla and really believes the MAC is a better conference than its perception. You got a great commit in Benton.

Look what we've done over the past few yrs with no 3 star recruits. 04-rock

stars mean absolutely nothing. If you think off of a sudden you are going to be Boise State you are out of your mind.

why is a guy who committed to CMU still planning on taking official visits to other schools?

Benton tells scout.com:

Quote: I’ll take all my officials, West Virginia will definitely be one and Central Michigan (the WMU game was an unofficial), Bowling Green, Purdue and Iowa are the other places I might go.”

I hope CMU can hang on to him

To me, the significance of the MAC garnering high level 3 and the occasional 4-star recruit(s) is these kids aren't going to the premier Big 10 teams (i.e Wisconsin--insert Badge joke here _ _ _ _ _ _ ) Kids now realize they "ain't" going to the NFL being the 3 string punter for the BCS Championship team. This is why there's so much parity in college football these days. Example, Michigan, Notre Dame, Flordia State all once elite national powers are now relegated to rather pedestrian flavor of football.

Kids can develop their talents while playing for a MAC team. It's hard to develop your goods while on the bench. Plus some MAC teams are getting more national TV games as many BCS teams.

To a point I agree, but then disagree. Look at Barry Church. He was a 3 star recruit and probably the highest regarded recruit Toledo has ever signed. He's probably going pro after his junior year this season.
