What is a community organizer? - OptimisticOwl - 10-04-2008 12:40 PM What do they do? specifically, what did Obama do and how is this experience relevant to being president? RE: What is a community organizer? - ausowl - 10-04-2008 02:06 PM OptimisticOwl Wrote:What do they do? specifically, what did Obama do and how is this experience relevant to being president? We'll always have wikipedia: Community Organizing There's a quick read relevant to Texas regarding faith based community organizing - Cold Anger by Mary Beth Rogers. I assume it's still in print. Essentially a bio of Ernie Cortez (sp?) and political realignment in San Antonio. How it relates to Obama as president? As a 22 year old Senator Obama had a job interacting with and motivating marginalized folks. Obama's exposure to all stratus of society is a positive rather than a negative. Not sure any 22 year old's job is a qualifier for president. I suspect that Rudy G and Palin, et al, those who laugh at the mention of "community organizer", see community organizer as a caricature of the pissed off minority lookin' to get over on the man. Perhaps that's just my own bias showing as I didn't get the punch line at the Rep. convention. RE: What is a community organizer? - OptimisticOwl - 10-04-2008 02:16 PM ausowl Wrote:OptimisticOwl Wrote:What do they do? specifically, what did Obama do and how is this experience relevant to being president? Wow. I didn't even know it, but I am a community organizer too. Do you know what specific projects BO worked on? "Interacting with and motivating marginalized folks" is kind of vague, and I can think of some people that it would fit that probably are not what you mean. RE: What is a community organizer? - ausowl - 10-04-2008 02:37 PM Sure, we're ALL community organizers at some level. ![]() Anyway on the off chance that question isn't a punch line, I'll put on my earnest hat: Don't know the details of Obama's work beyond the campaign bromides - "moved to Chicago in 1985, where he became a community organizer with a church-based group seeking to improve living conditions in poor neighborhoods plagued with crime and high unemployment." If you're seriously interested in the day to day, "what do community organizers do", you might ck out your local ACORN offices. If you can get beyond the liberal, egg sucking stereo types, some of those folks do good work. Or if you're in a major metro area, see if there's an Interfaith organization. In Houston, this was 20 plus years ago, Houston Metro. Ministries was one example. Quick google search, http://www.imgh.org/ They probably have some community organizing types hanging about. Austin Interfaith is another example http://austininterfaith.org/. The principals much of these orgs have in common are based on Saul Alinsky's work (again to the Wikipedia Saul Alinsky). And with that, I'm off to Costco to fill up my gas guzzling minivan and hunt for snacks for tonight's game. RE: What is a community organizer? - OptimisticOwl - 10-04-2008 03:36 PM ausowl Wrote:Sure, we're ALL community organizers at some level. Well my earnest hat is on, too. I've been wondering about this for six months, just got around to asking. My impression is/was that a ComOrg worked in things like developing adult education programs, opening job centers, starting youth programs, etc. I see the need for and admire those things, but I am looking for the relevancy of the experience to the requirements for the office he is seeking, Chief Executive. Did he head any organizations, run any staffs, hire and fire any people, balance any budgets, act as an excutive in any way, or was it all just carrying signs and speaking to meetings? It is his campaign and supporters that put this forward as relevant experience, apparently equal or greater than that of being a mayor or Governor, and i am just trying to see what it really is. RE: What is a community organizer? - ausowl - 10-04-2008 04:30 PM As an Obama supporter, I haven't seen it promoted as such. Obama's CO experience as a 22 yr old as equivalent to mayoral or gubernatorial experience is just silly. I'll admit to the possibility of glossing over such a characterization as a campaign absurdity. I have a tendency to keep cognitive dissonance to a minimum these days. Three year old twins in the house will do that to you. Pondering this just a bit, I suspect both campaigns use the tag of "community organizer" as a short hand or code, rather than anything substantive: For Texas Observor reading, Bob Eckhart admiring, Obama-Alinskites on the left, (arguably a mere remnant in Texas), it's code for "He's w' us." For McCain, Palinettes, Phil Gramm admiring on the right, it's code for "He's again' us." RE: What is a community organizer? - WoodlandsOwl - 10-04-2008 10:03 PM Outsider of Rice's own Medical Student turned Communist Revolutionary and instigator of riots, Travis Morales, I'd say Houston's equivalent of Obama as a "community organizer" is former crack dealer and "HPD favorite"...Quanell X ...(center in the picture)

I wonder what the over and under on the McCain camp pulling out that sort of racist BS is these last few weeks? (That this garbage gets posted on THIS particular site hurts my feelings a bit, sort of makes me feel low down, like Rice just got blown out by the Toad or something. And I really will go have that Sheep Dip blended scotch to salve my compounded woes. I suspect an "off week" will help as well.) Guess we'll see how that works out for y'all, hangin' with the bottom dwellers. Go back and read (as opposed to watchin') the transcript of the VP date as punishment. You betcha'. Obama was a community orgnaizer. So is Quannel and Travis. Travis runs with the same type of people like Obama-- William Ayers for example. What is the difference between opinions of Travis and William Ayers? http://revcom.us/a/v20/960-69/960/moody.htm RE: What is a community organizer? - JOwl - 10-05-2008 09:53 AM WMD Owl Wrote:Outsider of Rice's own Medical Student turned Communist Revolutionary and instigator of riots, Travis Morales, I'd say Houston's equivalent of Obama as a "community organizer" is former crack dealer and "HPD favorite"...Quanell X ...(center in the picture) And what exactly makes you say that? OptimisticOwl Wrote:It is his campaign and supporters that put this forward as relevant experience, apparently equal or greater than that of being a mayor or Governor, and i am just trying to see what it really is.Really? Where has his campaign said that? RE: What is a community organizer? - OptimisticOwl - 10-05-2008 01:34 PM ausowl Wrote:Guess we'll see how that works out for y'all, hangin' with the bottom dwellers. I truly appreciate your lumping of everyone who doesn't agree with you under one flag. And to think, I was beginning to think we could have a civil discussion. when you said "marginalized folks", plus me knowing the areas in which he worked, I took that as code for "black community". Was i wrong? I've never heard of this other guy, but perhaps you could point out the reasons why he as a CO and Obama as a CO are not the same. I am sure there are lots of different ways of being a CO. It seems that almost every time I try to have a reasonable discussion with an Obama supporter, they resort to name calling, a la "Palinettes", which I think you mean in a derisive and derogatory way. It is hard to credit your views when they seem to be stereotypes and sound bites. Guess I will head back to the bottom now. If so, then indeed our ideas of civil discussion are different. Maybe in Houston its different from Chicago. If you mention the term, that is what I think of. Who are your examples of a "community organizers" in Houston? I thought you were reaching with "Palinettes" too, which would've been pretty tame even if it wasn't preceded by "Texas Observor reading, Bob Eckhart admiring, Obama-Alinskites on the left." RE: What is a community organizer? - OptimisticOwl - 10-05-2008 11:45 PM I still would like to know specific projects BO worked on, what he did on those projects, and how they turned out. If anyone has this information, please PM me. That's who I thought he was talking about, and the campaign only if they make this sort of desperate attack. If it turns out that ausowl really intended to say "OptimisticOwl is a bottom feeder," then I apologize to you. From the context I didn't get that at all. One thing you could do if you don't want to get lumped in with WMD is clarify whether you think his comparison is out of line. As far as I'm concerned it was about on par with "McCain has an illegitimate black baby." I would like to think that Rice alums of all political stripes are above that. FWIW I thought this started out as a pretty good topic. It's a shame it took this turn. |
