DURHAM, N.C. -- Florida State coach Bobby Bowden has Joe Paterno hanging around in the race to retire as major college football's career victories leader, but he has no peers when it comes to Atlantic Coast Conference victories.
Bowden won for the 100th time on Saturday, with 14 of those coming at Duke's expense. Former Virginia coach George Welsh is second in career ACC victories with 85.
Among active coaches, the next-closest to Bowden is his son, Clemson coach Tommy Bowden, who has won 30.
Bowden has reached 100 in less than 14 full ACC seasons. To put it in perspective, Georgia Tech has won 84 ACC games since joining the league in 1979, and Wake Forest has won 102 league games since becoming a charter member in 1953.
