Are we really that bad to have to play at Northern Illinois. Alabama plays Southern Mississippi but has never played over there. Why are we playing over there instead at home.

No. Illinois played in Winston-Salem last year, thus Wake travels there this year. While you may think of NIU as a "second-tier" program, they are in line to be a real power in the MAC which is one of the top non-BCS conferences. Marshall & Toledo are no slouches, and No. Illinois is right up there with them. Coach Grobe obviously has ties with NIU from his days at Ohio U and sees no problems in scheduling a home & home with them. Besides, a good OOC win on the road always looks good come time for bowl bids...

Don't let Northern Illinois fool you. Those mothers can play! We had to fight like hell to win that game last year. They are the East Carolina of Illinois. Not necessarily a huge name, but a damn good team. It would not surprise me at all if we got our asses kicked up there.

I'm not saying I think it will happen. I just don't want our people thinking that will be an easy win. I learned my lesson about being cocky four years ago. We opened the season at Air Force. I walked in that stadium like a strutting rooster with my chest stuck out. I left that stadium like a puppy with my tail between my legs. The score was 42-0 and the sad part was, the score was closer than the game was.

That was like Miami of Ohio at Kenan on opening day of the 1998 season (my second year at Carolina)... on the heels of an 11-1 season.

That and the Wake game last year are tied for the most shocked I've ever been at a football game (thank goodness I missed the Furman game the year they beat us).

The worst part about it is that they marched down the field for what seems like the entire fourth quarter, and kicked the winning field goal as time expired. That was excruciating....

JD,

That Miami of Ohio game was the same day of our Air Force game. I remember getting back to the hotel that night sunburned and humbled when someone said, "Carolina lost". I said, "yeah right, to Miami of Ohio?". I was utterly shocked when I found out it was true. A truly forgettable day for the ACC.

I am very scared of the No. Illinois game. They almost came back and beat us last year in Groves. We need to win or this team could get all anxious and have a bad season. Luckily, that WR that killed last year is gone.

- Big Pimpin Deac - 07-19-2002 07:46 AM

Amen to that, Orio. That receiver was the reincarnation of Randy Moss. I think he had 275 yards receiving that day! Once again, I am impressed with your football knowledge.

Thanks BPD,

The No. Illinois thing looks like a 2 for 1 made by Caldwell. The third game will be in 2008. I like we scheduled ECU for a 4 for 2 deal, that is a great schedule for us.

Here is a list of our future opponents for about 8 years. Lots of service academies.

Your sig line with the words to the fight song had "DEAMON Deacons". And the correct spelling is "DEMON Deacons".

We will beat them like the proverbial red-headed stepchild-I guarantee it!
