Following the Money
Embryonic Stem Cells and Big Bucks

March 23, 2006

Last week, the South Korean government revoked the license of scientist Hwang Woo-Suk. The revocation followed revelations that Hwang, whose claimed breakthroughs in cloning made him a national hero, had fabricated his data. Hwang is now barred from

This article makes capitalism sound like a bad thing.

- Sophandros - 03-23-2006 02:18 PM

I see it as more anti-science than anti-capitalism. Conservative Christians love capitalism--unless the money isn't going into their pockets.

- OptimisticOwl - 03-23-2006 03:26 PM

Well, I love capitalism, period, and I am not even a CC using Soph's labels. But that is beside the point.

It may be a selfish position, but I could really care less who gets rich if they find cures for diabetes, cancer, Parkinson's, MD, ALS, etc.

- DrTorch - 03-23-2006 03:55 PM

Wow, you guys missed the point entirely. The point is that the cures are NOT coming from embryonic stem cell research.

- OptimisticOwl - 03-23-2006 03:58 PM

OK, I'm tired and I'm busy. Got to admit I just skimmed your post. Give me a short paragraph summarizing the point, especially vis-a-vis the money, and I'll try again.

Good. When there is a cure, you promise not to use it, right? Yes, the Korean guy made the science look bad but so did their old Hyundai cars. However through time they got better and better to the point where the cars are successes.

P.S. How many of you think masturbation is murder? Just think of all those poor babies that are being killed as they go down the drain! 03-melodramatic

Are we to assume that you have absolutely no idea how a fetus is formed?

- Guest - 03-23-2006 05:08 PM

One dude fudging his research does not mean the whole field is bad.

And political activists have no place in making scientific policy decisions.

Planning to commit suicide?

lmfao lmfao lmfao

Not yet. That's why it's called RESEARCH.

Please, leave science to the scientists.

I think that you know which people I'm talking about here. It's the loudmouths who want to interject religion in places where it does not belong, like in science labs and science classrooms, who I'm talking about, not the average conservative who is a Christian.

Money doesn't equal bad research. This argument is a red herring.

Your original comment was really quite cynical, and you used a very, very, broad brush to try and get us all at once. There is a wide variety of conservatives, just as there is a wide variety of liberals. Look at the thread where people were tested on their percentage of agreement with the various political parties. You were a Socialist, i was a Capitalist. NO TWO WERE ALIKE. We do not all fit under one umbrella. I agree with a lot of those guys on a lot of issues, but you really must start seeing us as individuals. You want to be seen as an individual, but you won't return the respect.

"Conservative Christians love capitalism - unless the money isn't going into their pockets". Think about what you said. You basically said that that the only thing motivating conservative Christians is making money.
And you made no exceptions. Not some CC's, not some people, just "CC's love capitalism".

I see people as individuals. I was merely making an indictment on a particular movement that is plaguing this great nation.

I was also needling the first to posters on this thread.
