Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. 2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc. 3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc. 4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. 5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution. 6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. 7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. 8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. 9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. 10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. 11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked. 12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations. 13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. 14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. These are the 14 identifying qualities of fascism. - Ninerfan1 - 07-13-2004 04:10 PM     - Dogger - 07-13-2004 06:05 PM The minute John Ashcroft went public with Al-Queada is going to hit us hard during the Abu Ghraib prison photo fiasco you knew this was a SOP for these guys. When Tom Ridge called him out on it everyone in America should have been outraged. Yes, even GB and Niner. Their silence about this dreaded issue speaks volumes about their credibility in these matters. To them it is OK to play politics with national security as long as it's "their guy" pulling the strings. It's funny you don't see ole Rummy on the front stage anymore. His old Europe comment may be the most ridiculus foreign policy statement made in decades. I looked at a Time magazine from Dec. of 2002. It's was amazing. The cover was Rummy's war. How things have changed. - charles - 07-13-2004 06:15 PM Trooper Wrote:Democrats have done as much to limit freedoms and wasted as much money as republicans. You guys are in no position to be throwing stones. In fact, it was Lyndon Johnson and the hippies that first knocked the U.S. out of the "best nation" status although Nixon, Reagan, Ford, and both of the Bushes did nothing to halt the decline. This is all going to end in civil war(s), it's not a question of if but a matter of when.Dogger Wrote:Whenever Kerry is getting some traction they always bring up some terrorist threat? This is worth a read: http://www.onlinejournal.com/Special_Repor...n-fitrakis.html An excerpt: On Monday, June 14, the eve of Kerry's two-day visit here, Attorney-General Ashcroft dramatically seized national headlines by unsealing a four-count month-old indictment of Abdi, a Somali native living in Columbus. "The American heartland was targeted for death and destruction by an al-Qaeda cell allegedly which included a Somali immigrant who will now face justice," Ashcroft boasted. Ashcroft failed to point out that Abdi had been in custody since November 28, 2003. I am familiar with the writers of that article, and they lean pretty far to the left. But I know some extremely reasonable, fair-minded people who independently reached exactly the same conclusion about Ashcroft's motives. As you chew on that, also chew on the next link I have for you, about a major terrorist you never heard of. They caught him in Texas with machine guns, remote-controlled explosive devices and a cyanide bomb big enough to kill everyone in a 30,000-square-foot building. But Ashcroft never even bothered to issue a news release. Why? Read on. - Dogger - 07-13-2004 08:54 PM Schad, That is such a troubling article. This election is so important to America. The neocon crowd is so incompetent and dangerous. - Rebel - 07-13-2004 09:05 PM What exactly IS a Neo-Con? Is that like a Neo-Socialist? You know, like the Democrats as of late? Damn, I do miss the days of the Zell Miller Democrats. I actually used to debate in my head who I would vote for(Local elections only). No better person than John Kerry to make Clinton look right-leaning. - charles - 07-13-2004 10:22 PM Dogger Wrote:Schad,A democrat calling republicans incompetent and dangerous is like Saddam Hussein calling Adolf Hitler an evil dictator. People wearing flags and symbols do so to show support for troops and the ideals of the nation. The government hasn't made anybody wear symbols. What am I missing? 2) People who are prisoners are now getting trials (or whatever you want to call it). Sure, the courts intervened but the administration did as was demanded. IMO, if those in captivity are a threat, keep 'til they ain't no more. As for torture...it was wrong but it was not approved by the administration. 12-15 idiots did it. 3) Terrorists are a threat. Americans have a tendency to become complacent. Advising us to stay on our toes is not a horrible thing. 4) When doesn't this happen? The American military has always (with the exception of Vietnam and the ensuing 5-8 years) has always been revered and well-funded. 5) Do I need to watch the news more closely? Again, what am I missing? 6) Not happening, no matter what the whacko's say. 7) See #3 8) The President is a man of faith, true. This is a bad thing? Courts haven't struck down any of his policies for violating the separation. 9) If you (general you, not you specifically Trooper) think this is happening, I advise seeing a shrink for the paranoia. 10) See #6 11) See #6 12) I, as an American citizen, still have the right to due process. This may be a #6, but if you are referring to the guys at Gitmo...well that's a whole other topic. 13) See #6 14) There were two major recounts done by media outlets after the Supreme Court stepped in. Gore lost. Get over it already. EDIT: You know, the modern liberals hero, FDR, meets almost all of these criteria too.
