6.3? you can't have 6.3 IP.

- jrhessey - 06-02-2004 02:09 PM

ready for your math lesson...

6 1/3 ip.... to convert the fraction to decimals

take 1 and divide it by 3... what do you get??

ready for your baseball lesson? No baseball fan has ever said 6.3 IP. The correct use for 6 and 1/3 innings is 6.1.

you just did.... 6.3 is 6 and 1/3

jrhessey, swoosh is right on this one. If you pitch 6 1/3 innings, it should be stated 6.1 innings. Doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's just the way it is.

- jrhessey - 06-02-2004 02:36 PM

<a href='http://www.baseball-reference.com/j/johnsra05.shtml' target='_blank'>look here... I guess baseball-reference is wrong to...</a>

- GDawgs88 - 06-02-2004 02:37 PM

Yep, they're wrong, too.

- jrhessey - 06-02-2004 02:52 PM

so you're teling me you belive 1/3 = .1 and is proper mathematics??

I didn't say swoosh was wrong, I told him 6 and 1/3 innings pitched is 6.3 innings pitched...

I've seen espn and other sites, on tv also that say it the same way, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3... I understand what the stat is saying, but if .1 ip is one out, shouldn't there be 10 outs in an inning?? I think someone took a left turn in 3rd grade math somewhere...

but when you say 6 and 1/3 you are also saying 6.33333333333333333333333333... that is my point...

- zelinleaf - 06-02-2004 02:54 PM

for baseball that seems to be the proper mathematics

jrhessey Wrote:so you're teling me you belive 1/3 = .1 and is proper mathematics??
no, but that is how the baseball intelligentsia has always stated it.

- jrhessey - 06-02-2004 03:27 PM

so as long as I say 6 and 1/3 instead of 6.3 you don't have a problm with it, even though they are the exact same thing??

- GDawgs88 - 06-02-2004 03:55 PM

When did I say that? I said that it didn't make sense.

pretty much

Just for the sake of arguing...

Take Curt Schillings last start and figure out his ERA for the start...

7.2 IP and 4 ER. The formula for ERA is ER * 9 / IP.

- tysramm1 - 06-02-2004 08:44 PM

how does this prove anything, ERA is somewhere around 4.40

the answer is 4.70.
