I hope now that he's won 300, people will recognize him for what he is: The best pitcher of this era. - baseballstud - 08-07-2004 08:32 PM GDawgs88 Wrote:Maddux wins it. He didn't have the K's? Big deal! He had a much better ERA, about half as many walks, and he's been much more consistent. I'd take Maddux over Bottle Rocket any day. - techfan4 - 08-07-2004 09:55 PM Maddux is better than Clemens. He is a control pitcher in a power pitcher's game. The other great pitchers right now all throw 94 mph+ 94+ -------------------- Randy Johnson Pedro Martinez Roger Clemens Curt Schilling Eric Gagne John Smoltz Others: Mike Mussina Mark Prior Kerry Wood Jason Schmidt Eric Milton Billy Wagner 89 or less -------------------- Greg Maddux Others: Tom Glavine - cbfranchise3 - 08-07-2004 10:38 PM The argument against Maddux is that he was never great. I applaud his consistency, but this is similar to the Palmeiro argument. While at the end of his career Palmeiro will have outstanding numbers, anybody who followed him over his career would say he was never a dominant player. The same goes for Maddux. Clemens was a feared pitcher. Maddux never was. This is when you have to go above statistics. - baseballstud - 08-07-2004 11:14 PM cbfranchise3 Wrote:The argument against Maddux is that he was never great. The same goes for Maddux.how can you say that maddux was never great? For 2 seasons, 1994 and 1995, he was a combined 35-8 with a 1.60 ERA. From 1992-1998 he had 7 amazing seasons. Clemens has always had a higher ERA than maddux, and he has never had a sustained stretch of brilliance like Maddux. - techfan4 - 08-08-2004 12:40 PM Of course you aren't going to fear a control picther  300 wins while not being feared is great in my eyes. He's playing the game a way no other guy can. He's well above the others. You don't have to dominate, just get the job done and win the game. That is what makes you great. I'd rather get 15 wins for 16 straight seasons(will be 17 this year), have a career 2.90 ERA and win 300 games, than have an up-and-down career. Randy Johnson: When he's goos he's good, when he's not HE's NOT. 18-2 one year, 9-10 another, 20-4 one year 6-8 another. Pedro: Better so far than Randy, but is not as consistent as Maddux. Schilling: No consistensy at all. Rocket: Lots of wins, ERA jumps around, lots of BB Prior: Young, great so far, could become a great pitcher Wood: The way he throws will kill him later in career, ERA jumps around. Mussina: ERA is normally 3.5-4.3, but he wins games. Schmidt: Coming along late in career, high ERA early in career. I'd take Maddux over any of these guys. He will never be injured unless he gets hit with a ball, he is the most consistent player in baseball. He knows how to play the game right. He doesn't show much emotion, but gets the job done. He has a world series ring, he's won many division titles.(Pedro, Prior, Wodd, Schmidt haven't) And he doesn't even throw over 90 mph because he doesn't have to. He is a GREAT pitcher. - cbfranchise3 - 08-09-2004 08:04 PM tysramm1 Wrote:35 wins in two years is not dominant, that is really good.cbfranchise3 Wrote:The argument against Maddux is that he was never great. Clemens has always had a higher ERA than maddux, and he has never had a sustained stretch of brilliance like Maddux. That is my entire point. Maddux is a really, really, really good pitcher that has been remarkably consistent over his career. But he has never had that aura about him, that greatness that defines great athletes. I made the reference to Palmeiro earlier, every sport has this rivalry. Cliff Robinson will have had astonishing numbers at the end of his career, and has been one of the most consistent players in the NBA, averaging ten points per game the last 14 seasons. This is the exact same argument. Is he better than Kevin McHale? You all refuse to look at anything but stats. Step back, close your eyes, and think. Baseball is not a science or a math equation. It is an art. The attraction is not the marvel of the beauty, but the reflection of the mind. That relates directly to Clemens. - tysramm1 - 08-09-2004 08:37 PM cbfranchise3 Wrote:Why will you not look at the stats, he isnt just some consistent average player like cliff robinson, or a greatly consistent above average player like palmeiro. Maddux has been consistently great. Also the media many times creates an "aura" around popular or media friendly players, so often players that arent that outspoken dont get the credit they deserve. I'm not sure if this is the case with Maddux, but anyone who knows anything about baseball knows how great and dominant he has been for the last 10+ years.tysramm1 Wrote:35 wins in two years is not dominant, that is really good.cbfranchise3 Wrote:The argument against Maddux is that he was never great. He was dominating in his prime. simply dominating. IMO, if you don't think maddux was great, you either know nothing about baseball, or are an astros fan (which would subsequently mean you know nothing about baseball). Maddux has had an under 3.00 ERA in 9 seasons, and has won at least 18 games in 9 seasons. The best two things maddux has ever accomplished are; an under 2.00 ERA twice, and a 300-170 record, whihc is a 63.8 winning percentage. |
