- vthokie - 08-08-2004 12:36 AM Hopefully they keep this up and finish strong. I said at the beginning of the year that finishing 3rd in the division would be great, and that's very possible if the team doesn't go on another crap out streak. - techfan4 - 08-08-2004 12:42 PM If they bring in another .300+ hitter and 1 or 2 starting pitchers and 2 or 3 relievers, they will have a chance to finish first or second NEXT year. This year, 3rd is a possibility. - vthokie - 08-08-2004 08:51 PM The streak's up to 6! Unfortunately, the Rays won too so we're still in 4th by .001%. To be better, I don't even think the Os need another hitter. IMO, they need... A. An ace pitcher. B. Two solid relievers. C. A closer. Supposedly the O's organization is excited about some of their young pitchers, so maybe we'll only need to buy an ace pitcher this offseason since I dont think one of those are going to come about among the ones we have. Personally, I think the squad made a mistake firing Hargrove. I would have liked to see what he could do with this team. I was hoping be fore the year that this team coule break .500, and given the current streak, they're back in the race. - flyingswoosh - 08-09-2004 03:46 PM VTHokie Wrote:The streak's up to 6! BTW, there isn't an ace on the market this year. there are plenty of hitters, but hardly any pitchers. - vthokie - 08-09-2004 06:49 PM flyingswoosh Wrote:I don't think the Os are nearly as far away from being a contender as you think. The team is very young, and the squad really likes some of their younger pitchers. The O's certainly don't need another hitter with Tejada, Lopez, Mora, and David Newhan who's really coming around. All of these guys bat above 300 and the Os have Palmeiro and Tejada to provide power.VTHokie Wrote:The streak's up to 6! Sidney Ponson is 7-12 right now, but he lost 9 in a row in the middle of the year, but he has now won 4 in a row since. Usually, he's good for 18 or so wins a season. Dave Borkowski may be breaking out rather soon. Daniel Cabrera is also developing nicely. Maybe Cabrera will turn into an ace, though I'm not real sure whether those that know baseball better than me believe he has that potential. The relievers SUCK though and so if the Os can grab two solid relievers and that's it, they should have a solid year (contending for #2 in the division and a Wild Card slot). BTW, the Os just won #7 in a row today and I'm hoping the Rays lose today to scoot into 3rd. :D - flyingswoosh - 08-09-2004 08:05 PM VTHokie Wrote:Palmeiro- simply put, he's done.flyingswoosh Wrote:I don't think the Os are nearly as far away from being a contender as you think. Newhan- i'm not saying he won't keep this up for the rest of his career, but the fact is that he's not young anymore. he's not a prospect. There have been many players who have been career minor leaguers, who came up during the season, did well, and then came back down to earth. I think cabrera can really pitch, and so can bedard. But ponson is not even close to being an Ace. he definitely can't win 18 games without 7 rpg. Borkowski isn't that good. i saw him pitch against the bulls in AAA, and i wasn't the least bit impressed. The problem with the O's is that for the next 10 years, they'll have a lot of trouble beating the yeankees, red sox, and d-rays. Keep in mind how deep the rays farm system is. - cbfranchise3 - 08-09-2004 08:08 PM Props to Tejada, the best shortstop in baseball. Even if A-Rod was still playing SS, I would take Tejada over him. - vthokie - 08-09-2004 08:25 PM flyingswoosh Wrote:I wasn't trying to say that Ponson would become an ace. He's getting old (30 I think), but I do believe he can be a solid #2 or #3 pitcher. I also did forget about Bedard when bringing up my list of pitchers. I also forgot Lopez.VTHokie Wrote:Palmeiro- simply put, he's done.flyingswoosh Wrote:I don't think the Os are nearly as far away from being a contender as you think. I forgot that Newhan wasn't young, but he's 30, so he's not REAL old either. I dunno much about him, but maybe he was lazy when he was younger, had potential and then just recently a light flickered inside him. THAT happens too. I don't think the Os are nearly in as much trouble as you think. The Os are starting to spend money again now that money has been freed up to thanks to Belle's contract finally expiring. I think another big hitter will be acquired (and I don't think it's something we desperately need, but I'm not gonna gonna be angry if we get one as we can always use another). If we get two relievers though, watch out. You might just be surprised. |
