The rumors won't go away. I have a feeling they're going to ebb and flow throughout this entire season.

So, let's get a discussion going here.

What do you folks think about the possibility of Steve Spurrier coming to UNC after this season *if we have another bad year? Would you want him here?

(That "if" is a big one, and not intended to say that we will be bad this year. We're just playing hypotheticals here.)

I have an opinion on this issue, but I'm going to withhold it for a few posts.

i think it would be good, but i don't think it will happen.

You know what he did for Duke.............

Bunting doesn't need a name like that hanging over him this season.

Okay, my opinion: I don't want to see Spurrier in Chapel Hill, under any circumstances.

Apparently, a lot of people are saying it will happen if this year doesn't go well. Now, we've been through the rumor mill enough to know to take that kind of talk with a grain of salt, but even Mike Wilbon on PTI brings it up every now and then. This rumor may have legs.

Even so, I think it would be a mistake to bring Spurrier to Chapel Hill. Yes, he's a big-name coach and he would bring a lot of excitement to the program (especially if this year is another bad one). But, eventually that excitement subsides and people are going to want to see results. Can Spurrier provide those? I'm not so sure.

Spurrier brought in a lot of talent down in Florida, but that was Florida. Here, he would have to deal with State, UVa, VPI, Tennessee, GA, Clemson, USC, and a ton of other schools just for the NC recruits. Plus, the rumor is that he's not too wild about recruiting -- that he let his assistants take care of that for the most part. I really don't think he would do that much better of a job than Bunting, if he did any better at all. Bunting is recruiting well after losing seasons. Imagine what he could do after a winning season.

The main reason I don't want him here, though, is that he has no allegiance to this school. He coached at dook, for crying out loud! He would not hesitate to skip town at the drop of a hat for a "better" job. And, there's no guarantee he would leave us in better shape than he found us.

I really want to see Bunting succeed at UNC. All of the reservations I have about Spurrier are answered by Bunting. The only thing yet to be seen with him is the in-game coaching, and I believe this year will tell the tale there. He has all the pieces in place to make a move.

If we have another terrible year, I'll probably also be willing to admit that it's time for Bunting to go. But, I think we could get a better fit for this program than Spurrier. And, I hope that we would.

You bring up some very good points JD, and I agree with them all. So, I'm changing my answer to, NO!

I heard a rumor that Mr. Mack Brown will likely be asked to leave Longhorn Country after this year, maybe he'll come back haha, talk about no allegiances! 05-nono

There are too many of us who remember the way he conducted himself at dook when they were using trick plays to run up the score. I think he's an egomaniac. He wouldn't stay around long unless he was planning on taking lots of trips to the beach and playing golf. If he was serious about coaching, he'd be looking to move on somewhere else.

Bunting has had some problems. Some of them were his own doing, some were related to the situation he inherited. He has shown a willingness to correct his mistakes, particularly in the area of assistant coaches. He works tirelessly and is on the verge of becoming a solid recruiter. What he brings most of all is his love for the University and the football program. In the long run, I believe that will make him successful because he is willing to do what it takes to succeed while maintaining the integrity of the program. I'm willing to give him some more time to get things going.
