Delany tells teams to stop flag planting

Minnesota tried to plant a flag in the Michigan Stadium field after beating the Wolverines, 23-20, last Saturday. But the flag would not stick because of the surface is artificial, FieldTurf.

The intent was enough for Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany. Delany has witnessed flag planting twice this season -- Michigan State also planted its school flag after beating Notre Dame -- and issued a memo this week to school athletic directors and coaches that banned the postgame celebration.

Gophers make home for Little Brown Jug

Minnesota has the Little Brown Jug -- the 102-year old trophy awarded to the winner of the Michigan-Minnesota game -- and it's on display.

About 60 fans visited the football complex Monday to see the jug and take photographs with it.

"I think that's pretty awesome," Gophers defensive end Keith Lipka said. "It feels great."

The Gophers won, 23-20, on a field goal with one second left at Michigan Stadium last Saturday.

Fans greeted players at the airport when they arrived Saturday. Coach Glen Mason took the Little Brown Jug to a downtown restaurant Saturday night and was overwhelmed by fans wanting pictures of it.

The jug will be kept in the players' lounge in a special trophy case that was being built this week. The Gophers already have special cases for Paul Bunyan's Axe (Wisconsin game) and Floyd of Rosedale (Iowa game).

Hoosiers on upswing under coach Hoeppner

Indiana, under first-year coach Terry Hoeppner, is off to a 4-1 start. It's the first time since 2001 the Hoosiers have had at least four victories.

"We've gotten peoples' attention, and that certainly was our goal," Hoeppner said of attracting IU fans back to games.

So far, so good. Through three home games, the Hoosiers have averaged 34,556 in attendance. Last season, they averaged 28,3397. They have not had a winning season since 1993 (8-4).

Buckeyes still proud with title hopes dashed

Ohio State is 3-2, with tough losses to Texas and Penn State, and 1-1 in the Big Ten.

The national title is out of the question, and winning an outright Big Ten championship is pretty much out of their control. Penn State would have to lose twice in the next five games and OSU would have to win out. But the Buckeyes are not talking about salvaging the season.

"Salvage is a term I wouldn't use," senior linebacker Bobby Carpenter said. "That sounds like you're picking something off the scrap table. We're a good team. We lost two tough games to two good teams.."
