SOPHOMORE FORWARD TEARS KNEE LIGAMENT

MOBILE, Ala.- University of South Alabama soccer player Jennifer Beckwith will miss the 2004 season after tearing her left anterior cruciate ligament in a recent summer club game.

Jaguar head coach Mike Varga said the sophomore will receive a medical red-shirt for the upcoming season. Beckwith, a native of Worthington, Ohio, underwent successful surgery on Tuesday in her home state and expects to fully recover by next spring. Beckwith sustained the injury while playing for her hometown club team during a regional game held in Illinois.

As a true freshman last season, Beckwith was the Jags' second leading scorer with 15 points. She netted four goals and registered a team-high seven assists while starting all 21 games.

"I feel really bad for Jen," Varga said. "It's a blow to our team, but it's part of athletics. We will need some other players to step up this fall."

The Jaguars open the regular season Aug. 27 at Birmingham Southern.
