Report confirms: Democrats in ‘total control’ of 5 states with the biggest debts - CrimsonPhantom - 10-20-2026 07:12 AM

Quote:Meanwhile, North Dakota rated best with ‘$21 billion more than it needed to pay its bills’

A new report confirms that Democrats are in “total control” in five U.S. states with the biggest debts, while North Dakota ended up on the other end of the scale, with Republicans in control there, and the state’s $21 billion more than it needed to pay bills.

According to an analysis by the Washington Stand, the Truth in Accounting organization gave the GOP-run North Dakota an “A” grade for having a surplus of $72,300 … per taxpayer.

“While oil, gas, and coal tax revenues declined due to lower energy prices, the decrease was offset by strong investment earnings and federal grant revenue,” the TIA report said.

The report, the 17th annual version of the “Financial State of the States,” assesses the 50 state governments in terms of assets and liabilities.

In North Dakota, Republicans hold the offices of governor, attorney general and secretary of state, and have majorities in both the state House and Senate.

The other end of the scale was occupied by New Jersey, with just $56.8 billion to fund $219.1 billion in outstanding debt, the report said.

“Every New Jersey resident would have to pay $45,800 in taxes to eliminate the deficit. The biggest share of the outstanding debt is in unfunded pension and retiree health care benefits. The former debt is more than $79 billion, while the latter exceeds $91 billion,” the Washington Stand documented.

There are Democrats in all the state’s biggest executive branch jobs, and Democrats in majorities in both legislative chambers.

The Stand confirmed, “Connecticut is the second least healthy state government, according to the TIA report, with every resident having to pay an additional $41,400 in taxes to restore the Nutmeg State’s financial health. Third is Illinois, with a deficit per resident of $36,900, followed by Massachusetts, where $24,100 would have to be paid by each resident, and California at $16,000.”

Democrats are in control of all branches of those governments.

The healthy part of the state population is seconded by Alaska, with a surplus valued at $64,200 per resident. Alaska Republicans occupy the three highest executive branch positions, and the GOP controls the state Senate, but Democrats hold the lower chamber, the report said.

Wyoming is No. 3, with a surplus valued at $30,300, followed by Utah at $14,900 and Tennessee at $11,400. Republicans hold all of the top executive branch positions, as well as control of both chambers of these states’ legislatures.

The residents were voting with their feet, the Washington Stand said.

“Together, the top five states gained nearly 48,000 new residents, while the bottom five lost almost 350,000, with California the biggest loser at 229,000.

“Twenty-four states still carry significant debt burdens, driven by rising costs, inflation, and ongoing pressure to fund promised pension benefits. The investment markets have also significantly affected how government debt is reported. When markets perform well, the value of investments held by public pension systems often increases. These higher valuations offset the estimated cost of promised pension benefits, making a state’s pension debt appear lower. However, these are unrealized, or ‘paper,’ gains, not actual profits. In volatile markets, these gains can quickly evaporate, causing pension debt to rise and increasing the overall reported debt burden,” the report said.

The bad thing is people living there run away because things are bad.
then move in RED states and vote for the same kind of people and policies that made the mess.
They just can't figure out that 2+2 is how they got to 4.

And Republicans are in control of many of the states with the worst public education systems.

Lots of blame to be given to both parties.

This is no longer true.

Education researchers are calling it the "Southern Surge" in education. There's a ton of data about it:

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/09/opinion/red-states-good-schools.html
https://www.urban.org/research/publication/states-demographically-adjusted-performance-2024-national-assessment

https://www.nationalreview.com/magazine/2025/10/the-southern-surge-in-education/

In short, southern states now lead the country in many education metrics.

For example, the top-10 for demographic-adjusted 4th grade math in 2024 was: Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Indiana, Nevada, Kentucky, Georgia.

They're attributing it to a lot of things, but most of it boils down to actually having standards for basic skills, and sticking to those standards.

These are the only states that require an exit exam to graduate from high school:

Texas
Florida
New Jersey
Ohio
Virginia
Louisiana

Theoretically you can graduate from high school in 44 states without the ability to read as a “functional illiterate”

The following states do require students to pass a Civics and/or Social Studies before graduating:

Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
Idaho
Iowa
Kentucky
Michigan
Mississippi
Missouri
Nevada
New Hampshire
North Dakota
Oklahoma
Tennessee
Utah
Wisconsin

One would hope not being able to read would make passing this test impossible making the Civics and/or Social Studies test a quasi Exit Exam in these states.

Based on the above very few “Blue” require any demonstration of educational proficiency before graduation.

Fair points, C-B. I stand corrected overall.

There are still a number of "conservative states" that could stand to improve even more. But clearly significant progress is being made. What is happening in Mississippi, for example, is particularly encouraging.

Captain Bearcat provided four sources. I skimmed three and his general point — that pubic ed improvement is being made in conservative states — seems fair, Mr. X.

I'll soon take a look at the source you link to.

We have created a society of softies, C-Jim. And I would know, as I'm a classic softy. Taking out the trash is tough manual labor for this sensitive gentleman. At least I can look in the mirror and recognize my softness. Many Americans (on both the political left and right) are oblivious to theirs.

Red states use and receive more federally funded welfare and assistance programs per capita than blue states, though blue states generally provide more state-funded cash benefits.

Yeah but those dummies graduate and run the states as adults and can do simple math and keep states solvent.

RE: Report confirms: Democrats in ‘total control’ of 5 states with the biggest debts - Eagleaidaholic - 10-21-2026 08:39 AM

The two states that receive the lowest amount of federal funding are Florida and Texas. They also don't have state taxes. Rural states receive the highest amount of federal funding due to infrastructure etc. Blue states are mostly urban states where people live on top of each other. Also, their local and state taxes are the highest. You would think the states that charge little to no state taxes would require the most federal funding. That is not the case. There is a reason for the descriptions Conservative and Liberal.

I just read the intro segment of the Linda Darling-Hammond piece to which you link, Mr. X. Thanks for posting, too. Darling-Hammond basically notes (as I interpret it) that many conservative states have made solid progress but that there is still work to be done.

And she adds that red states can learn from blue state and vis-a-versa.

The four articles Captain Bearcat linked to paint a reasonable (though perhaps not a full) picture.

I do not think this was the case in Florida. Over the last 6 years, Republican voter registration has been enormous. Well over 1 million more republicans registered over democrats.
