Pyongyang’s new skyline - Todor - 10-12-2026 03:26 PM

The South China Morning Post visited North Korea to cover the city’s recent building boom and rapid modernization.

New 80 story skyscrapers have dramatically remade the cities skyline in recent years. Streets are busier now, with modern Chinese electric cars, scooters, bikes. Ride sharing apps and food delivery apps reach even the smaller, forgotten parts of the country now. From tablets and smartphones, online shopping, a growing app economy, and major advancements in military technologies, Un has NK flush with cash lately somehow.

Solar panels are everywhere in the cities now. Huge new solar farms and new industrial greenhouse operations place North Korea near the top in the world for greenhouse food production levels. This is a very welcome thing in a cold country with little arable land, and tens of millions to feed.

New subways from China’s most modern rolling stock have given transit in the city a needed upgrade to the used Czechoslovak and GDR equipment they had operated for decades.

While the article didn’t talk much about them, there are new weapons programs, new generations of longer range missiles, new war ships, and new commercial and general navy ships as well.

The North Koreans seem to have forgotten they are under the heaviest sanctions the US can dole out. They seem to be almost flaunting the fact that things are changing quickly under Un.

Probably not AI because they know we can take satellite photos but North Korea and China have built empty skyscrapers before. Project building boom on the outside but unfinished and abandoned on the inside.

The Wall Street Journal says “the regime is wealthier than ever”

Exactly whose side is Wall Street on???

Insert audible gasp and visible pearl clutching action image here.

Our sanctions suck a$$ and don’t work because we aren’t powerful enough to enforce them.

We could borrow $40 trillion more trying, but the tide has turned and North Korea has defeated the sanctions.

FWIW, Forbes is reporting the exact same thing.

The WSJ and Forbes are news organizations whose job it is to report on these things. In your case, you only "report" on one side of every issue.

By what measure exactly? The average monthly salary in N Korea is $111 per month. That doesnt sound very "rich". Maybe "defeating the sanctions" means something different in Russia than it does here. Im sure Kim Jong Un is doing well---but Im not sure that tells us much about the true health of the N Korean economy because Kim Jong Un is going to be eating well and living in splendor even if most of his people were starving in the streets.

The weird triangle building in NK that was supposed to be a hotel is I think still empty. They put glass in the windows about 10 years ago. It was just concrete for a long time.

Dang! It's time for me to move to Nk. Maybe I can get a get deal on a condo with American dollars I'll be a king, well, maybe a prince.

From what I've read, NK also tends to build fake buildings/cities right across from borders. "Peace Village" directly across from the DMZ is a prime example.

Other than 1 hotel that was started when Kim Jong Un was 5 years old, what building projects in North Korea are abandoned?

He cleaned it up a little and made it less of an eyesore, but there’s no reason for him to waste money finishing something that serves no purpose. I’d be more concerned if he was spending large amounts of money on that hotel than on things North Korean people need, because there are plenty.

But honestly, no country I know of outranks the US in the size or scale of unfinished boondoggle projects.

Why are there 15 miles of tunnels built and billions spent on a supercollider project in Texas, but the worlds scientists go to Switzerland for their research?

Why, roughly 40 years later are authorities in Alabama still trying to figure out what to do with unfinished nuclear reactors that were nearly completed, never operated, and have sat abandoned for most of my life? What’s that $6 billion in today’s money btw?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellefonte_Nuclear_Plant

Why? Because not everything that gets started gets finished. Even if you have the money.

If North Korea has multiple ongoing new projects falling into this category, that would be an issue.

But as things stand, he’s got money, he’s rapidly building projects like housing that people need, and getting $hit done, despite the odds and lack of resources. And according to diplomats living there, it’s country wide, and not confined to just the capital at all.

RE: Pyongyang’s new skyline - TripleA - 10-14-2026 06:47 AM

I'm still trying to figure out Todor's motivation as an American (I assume) for being pro-Russian and other issues that are generally anti-American.
