Pierce era baseball recruiting - NYNightOwl - 05-12-2025 09:55 PM First commit of the Pierce era… Ian Melendez. https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/sports...555874007/ Mods - can someone pin this thread and replace the current 2021+ thread? That process is somewhat less than intuitive, but this looks right. As there was traffic in the previous recruiting thread yesterday, I'm not going to unstick it just yet. RE: Pierce era baseball recruiting - Tomball Owl - 05-14-2025 10:41 AM Thanks, Grungy! And thanks NYNightOwl for initiating the move! We probably need a few more ingredients though. Period. Though I suspect Pierce will be searching the transfer portal for those. BTW, UIW's entire team is in the portal-- 16 players and counting, including a stud hitter and Friday night starter. RE: Pierce era baseball recruiting - Houston Owl 2 - 05-15-2025 09:54 AM Melendez is a big time recruit and McCommas is a re-commit (he "de-committed" from us last week"). Both players will be able to really help us. I thought it was Delgado who decommitted from us last week? The 2 commits are Ian Melendez and Masa Chilcutt. Best I can tell, Dustin McComas is a senior editor with Five Tool Baseball and probably has exhausted his eligibility. RE: Pierce era baseball recruiting - Houston Owl 2 - 05-15-2025 11:07 AM My bad...sorry RE: Pierce era baseball recruiting - Almadenmike - 05-15-2025 01:08 PM (05-15-2025 10:50 AM)Tomball Owl Wrote: Best I can tell, Dustin McComas is a senior editor with Five Tool Baseball and probably has exhausted his eligibility. Yep. He's a 2009 UT-Austin grad (Kinesiology) ... among his jobs have been the baseball/basketball beat reporter at Orangebloods, com for 15 years ... and a former low-level scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates & LA Dodgers. https://www.linkedin.com/in/dustin-mccomas-0a355323/details/experience/ Pierce era baseball recruiting - owl at the moon - 05-15-2025 10:01 PM (05-14-2025 08:58 PM)Owl 69/70/75 Wrote:(05-14-2025 08:34 PM)Fort Bend Owl Wrote: Masa and Rice - pretty good combination to start with. RE: Pierce era baseball recruiting - Swede Owl - 06-03-2025 02:07 PM And so it begins. Hickson is now in the portal. Yes, but he's likely to get drafted regardless. Ton of elite, proven players with 2 - 3 years of eligibility remaining already in the portal. The challenge for Pierce is going to be keeping our Freshmen and recruiting at least 3 - 4 proven pitchers from the portal. Not an easy task. Hickson is now in the portal. Hickson will get drafted and unless he is lowballed, I would expect him to sign. It will be extremely difficult to get "proven players" (assuming proven means showing it at the D1 level) to come to Rice. It will be those who showed something in high school and went to name schools and did not play so they are looking for opportunities elsewhere. Just to show how difficult it is to attract proven players, Zach Root was the Saturday starter for East Carolina in 2024 and went in the portal. LSU reportedly offered him $250K. He ended up at Arkansas, so I assume they paid more. On the Aggie board, it was reported that the total payroll for the 2025 baseball team was $5 million, with all returning starters getting at least $250K. Rice does not have that kind of money. |
