With the exception of the Alabama-Arkansas, Florida-Mizzou games, great day for underdogs in the SEC SEC SEC. I bet they have 12 teams ranked in the Top 25 next week.05-stirthepot01-wingedeagle

RE: SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC
The SEC is on very slippery ground right now. Yes, the rankings are going to be more filled with SEC teams this week than we have every seen BUT that will not last. Some will have to lose and some will have to win. If we have another week like we did this week, the trend I am speaking of could very quickly turn and SEC teams could end up dropping out of the rankings in large numbers.

I knew it would happen eventually to the SEC. Parity is being achieved and the hierarchy is at risk. Alabama may scoot through the season unscathed but this isn't one of those Untouchable Squads that we have seen recently. This team can be beat as well.

LSU and Alabama still have yet to play and the LSU team that lost to Ole Miss is still capable of beating Alabama. Both teams will have a bye week before that game so it definitely will be possible.

Next week we will see an invigorated Tennessee squad take on Alabama at Alabama. It is said that Tennessee arguably has one of the best if not the best offensive lines in the SEC. Butch has them on a high, perhaps they actually believe that they have a shot this time around.

If Alabama loses to Tennessee or LSU.....it wont matter how many SEC teams are ranked in the top 25. Let's not forget about an Auburn team that seems to be finding themselves. They have a few more weeks to go before they end the season against Alabama.

All this says to me is that the bottom teams are recruiting well (recruits want to go to any school in the SEC since it's the best football conference) and that the new coaches are starting to turn things around. Prepare to see lots of parity in the SEC. IF they can own their OOC it won't matter. I think the B12 has a solid collection of schools too. Everything will play out in a few weeks and then we will be able to accurately compare the leagues top to bottom.

It does matter. How many losses do you think the teams will be able to have in order to earn an invite into the 4 team National Tournament.

Florida State
Oregon
Ohio State
Baylor

What if all four go undefeated? Sure Alabama has just as much of a chance and yet they still have to play LSU, Auburn and Tennessee.

Ohio State and Baylor seem pretty free and clear to the end. Yes there still are some challenges for Baylor but you could compare their performance against ISU against some other performances against ISU and I am pretty sure one could reasonably say that Baylor is the best team in the Big 12.

This situation is a trend and we can see how it could very likely not work in the favor of the SEC. More and more parity means more losses at the top. One loss could be enough to keep the SEC out. Arguably, the Committee might put a one loss SEC Champion into the Tournament over an undefeated squad such as this year's Ohio State. That would be a huge statement to make though and I doubt those folks are willing to put out an undefeated squad from one of the Major Conferences, even if that is a team from the loathed Big Ten.

I don't see how their OOC games matter when it is the chaos happening During the SEC conference schedule that is doing the harm.

Oregon has to get by Stanford. Ohio State has only Michigan left and their issue is SOS as the rest of the Big 10 is lacking woefully. No offense He1nous but Iowa acquitted themselves well today and the Buckeyes were unimpressive again. It is such a 1 dimensional team it won't matter who they play in a major bowl. Right now F.S.U., Baylor, Oregon, or Alabama would handle them with relative ease.

Alabama and Missouri are still undefeated and Missouri is looking pretty strong. You do realize that if they get by South Carolina at home next week they will be favored in every game until they finish with A&M and that game will be interesting.

South Carolina was woeful again today and now Conner Shaw is injured. Tennessee played better but they aren't anywhere close to beating Alabama so you can forget about that one. Auburn could get up for Bama and create some problems for the Tide. But as big a fan as I am of the Tigers I wouldn't bank on that.

Alabama started slowly and beat soundly, but not as impressively as people thought they should, a very stout Virginia Tech team with a stellar defensive unit. You sell the Tide short.

As for Baylor and Texas Tech, Baylor looks real, but still hasn't played a decent defensive team. I'm reserving judgement until they've beaten Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech, not to mention a fairly good Oklahoma State. There is a lot of football left to play. The ACC, SEC, and Big 12 each have two unbeaten teams left. The Big 10 has a somewhat solid 1. The PAC has an Oregon team that has not proven yet that it can defeat Stanford. Some of the spoilers are now gone. It's a bit early to bury any conference at this time except for most of the Big 10. Miami has to play Florida State so the ACC can not have more than 1. Everyone in the Big 12 plays each other so they are can not have more than 1. Only the SEC if Missouri and Alabama can win out could be guaranteed at least 1. We'll see.

The only thing you can say at this point is that it is now likely that we will have at least 2 unbeaten teams at the end of the year, but is also still very possible to have none. You can also say that the number of 1 loss programs is shrinking drastically. It's going to be a wild finish.

No argument from me on Ohio State but I don't think it is as drastic as you portray it to be. The problem with the Big Ten is that our top teams havnt had weekly challenges to get them primed for the end of the year. That is changing as the Big Ten's middle tier and lower tier programs are improving this year. Our top teams theoretically should be better prepared. That being said, I can see why folks are doubting Ohio State. Hell, I am too. If they go undefeated though, they will get a shot. As much as people like to hate the Big Ten, an undefeated team out of it will get a strong look. I do think that Alabama, FSU and Oregon all get the look first if they finish undefeated. I think that between Baylor and Ohio State it will be a crap shoot if both go undefeated and only one of them will get the call.

In my opinion, right now the only team I am penciling in for the NCG is Florida State.

The look good and they have a stud for a quarterback. But what goes too unnoticed about the Seminoles is a very sound defense. Clemson like Georgia and A&M has no defense. Clemson has a very sound offense, but F.S.U. made them look inept tonight. That says something.

Florida State yearly is filled with what seems to be very athletic, very skilled but very emotional studs. They never really seemed to have the mental discipline to pull through despite their pedigree's. It's not always just about 40 times and Bench Press. The difference this year is that those emotionally unstable studs have a real leader they can rally behind and it shows.

FSU is going to be tough for anyone to handle and that includes Alabama. FSU has a strong defense every year, their offense is finally supporting them.

RE: SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC
Just a word about the original post... Many SEC teams are struggling this year for at least on of the following reasons:

1. Injuries (Georgia, Florida, South Carolina)
2. Vast inexperience on defense (Georgia, LSU, Tennessee)
3. The targeting rule

The reason that last item is important is the first rule of great defenses... don't think. The best defenses are instinctive, and that instinct is trained by rep after rep after rep of doing things correctly. When three starting defensive backs are all kicked out early in three different games, as happened yesterday, it shows that the form hasn't sunk in yet. When you make D-Backs have to think while they are covering and tackling, it takes away their edge, which is the one thing the SEC has owned this last decade.

Alabama is a great team, and Missouri is looking very good. In the rest of the SEC, there are great players, but great teams are just hard to come by week in and week out. Time to root for Alabama and Missouri the rest of the way so that the SEC Championship is a play-in game.

RE: SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC SEC
Ole Miss had the recipe for beating LSU. Just keep one man deep to prevent Mettenberger from going deep, like he always does. Mettenberger's 3 INTs was the result of this move. More and more teams will start doing this, which doesn't bode well for the Tigers...

Georgia is so beat up right now, they're going to have a rough time against Florida next week. Hell, they might even have trouble with Appalachian State in 2 weeks, if they lose any more players against Florida...

But isn't it a good thing to have the underdogs win once in a while? Makes the conference fun.

But isn't it a good thing to have the underdogs win once in a while? Makes the conference fun.

Of course, I do hope you guys make it all the way to the SEC CG without a loss. Would make for a fun game if both you guys and Alabama are undefeated. You guys have a tough stretch ahead. Hopefully more injuries don't occur.

Back to the way it used to be in the SEC with nearly every week a dogfight. Bottom half has made it really easy for the top half the last couple of years. Made the top half look better than it really was.

A competitive SEC will work wonders for the new SECN ratings as well. As a Missouri guy, I seriously believe Mizzou will probably drop a couple SEC games, maybe even three, and get a really good Bowl game. That was my goal at the beginning of the year. 9-3 would be awesome for the Tigers...especially after last year.

Missouri plays South Carolina at home, Tennessee at home then Kentucky away before your bye week. After that you have to travel to Ole Miss and then you finish off with A&M at home. Thoughts on each one? I haven't had a chance to watch much Mizzou this year.

South Carolina QB Conner Shaw may miss the game with his sprained knee too. That should tilt things in Mizzou's favor...

I see a home loss to South Carolina. They will be very mad and ready to play. Top to bottom they are just a better team. They are where we should be in 3-5 more years. We should win a close game at home with Tennessee. They are much improved as well. We could drop that one. We beat Kentucky on the road, although I think they will get up for that game with Missouri. As for the last two games, I think we may actually lose to Ole Miss on the road and win against the Aggies at home. After watching their D this weekend, I am feeling pretty good about that game. If the reverse happens, that's fine too. I think we drop two SEC contests..
