Colleges Push Pros to Change Their Draft Rules.
It looks like Delaney's statements about letting athletes turn pro out of high school maybe on the way.

This isn't hard.

The legal challenges probably won't go anywhere but there is nothing that requires colleges to permit scouts to have access to college athletes nor that requires colleges to permit scouts to have access to film, and certainly nothing that requires colleges to grant free admission and seats in the press box to scouts.

If a league doesn't permit athletes who have attained age 18 to sign with their teams, don't give them access.

That only works if everyone in CFB does it, though. Imagine the negative recruiting that would go on otherwise. "And another reason you shouldn't go to Florida State, son... they've locked out the NFL. They don't give 'em game film, they don't let 'em watch your practices, the coaches don't talk to NFL scouts, and the only way an NFL scout or GM can watch you at Florida State is if they buy a ticket and sit in the stands. Here at Florida, we welcome the NFL. We want them to see how good our players are. You'll have the best shot at making it to the NFL from right here at Florida. Those kids at Florida State, who knows what will happen to them."

The NFL doesn't want 18-21 year olds in the league. The only way it would work is if the nfl bought the CFL and set that league up as an 18-23 year only setup.

I think NFL football is too physical to allow young men coming out of high school to play. However, if you can join the service at that age, I guess why not the NFL….

There are a LOT of jobs that don't allow you to be hired out of HS regardless of talent. From professional jobs, to licensed jobs, to sales jobs, to even some retail jobs. I work as a mortgage broker. You won't be hired at my company straight out of high school. And we don't pay six figures (to start anyway) . Much less seven or even eight figures like the NBA.

The whole "if you can die for your country" mantra is so overrated: for the most part, the people who join the service are the ones who can't afford to go to college or can't make it in. And quite honestly they are the best recruits (easier to break down and rebuild). They HAVE to take teenagers.

Aren't you still growing into 21? Your brain isn't fully developed until 22ish. It's just not going to happen. Can't put teens at risk like that. And there is no minor league system to speak of.

From the NCAA membership's stand-point it doesn't make a bit of difference if the NFL never actually drafts an 18, 19, or 20 year-old they just need to be rid of the barrier so that there is no option. It's one thing to tell Joe Superstar he HAS to go to college for a year or three years in order to be drafted and a completely different thing if he doesn't get drafted at 18 and chooses to go to college in hopes of improving his stock.

The spin-off idea is one I have always wondered about.

Why doesn't the universities simply spin-off the profitable athletic teams, then have those teams pay for use of the logo/uniform? It'd be like Chico's Bail Bonds sponsoring the baseball team in Bad News Bears.

Presto, Title IX is no longer an issue.

It would work at a handful of places. Some multi-millionaire / billionaire licenses the use of the names, marks and facilities. Need places where the bulk of the ticket buyers aren't alums (alums are less likely to be big boosters of the idea and use of non-students) and the school has big national value.

The professionalization of college athletics is a really, REALLY bad idea. All that will happen is they will come to be seen by the public as the AAA version of the real thing.

Another idea that could change things is if the NCAA instituted a rule that any kid who accepts an athletic scholarship to any NCAA school has to commit himself to playing for a full 4 years before turning pro...

IMO, the people that I've seen play (or watch old highlight clips of) that might have been physically ready for pro fresh out of HS were:
Bo Jackson
Herschel Walker
Reggie White
Marcus Dupree
Rickey Williams
D.J. Williams (former Miami Hurricane, current Chicago Bear)
Allen Bailey (former Miami Hurricane, current K.C. Chief)
Jadeveon Clowney

All of the players I mentioned are (or were at one time) physical freaks of nature. However, the pro game is not just physical, it is extremely mental as well. The current rule that is in place right now should stay in place just for that reason. Since the NFL killed the USFL and the CFL is not a viable option, it will not hurt a student-athlete to go to college for 3 years.

That would be great but can the NCAA pass such a rule?

Kids are not entitled to a scholarship. If they want one, they should commit. If they aren't willing to commit, why should they be given a free ride? Government funds aren't used for scholarship at any major university. So the government would have no say in the matter. It's private funds that are being used here...

That would give the NFL an incentive to create an alternative path for low income kids who have no desire to get an education, since they only go to school to position themselves for the NFL draft. They would no longer be able to play college football, since they would be unable to pay their own way. A professional developmental league would be their only option, if the NFL wants to develop the talent they need...

RE: Colleges Push Pros to Change Their Draft Rules.
There have been a multitude of "minor league" football leagues that have failed XFL, USFL, and UFL to name a few and none of them have been successful. Part of the success of college sports is that the people playing are students representing your alma mater (or a friends, or families, etc). They are playing because they love to play and in theory want to get an education. At least having that idea in our heads make us love the sport more. Once players start to get paid it is no longer amateur-college sports it is "minor league" football which has been proven time and time again to be unsuccessful. College football is popular not only because of what it is (college-amateur football) but what it isn't ("minor leagues") which is what it would become.

That's a bad example....just because your company won't hire an 18 year old doesn't mean they CAN'T hire an 18 year old. That's the difference.

Correct. The message is the universities will no longer partake or appear to be a part of a system where the players are forced to go to college for free except for scholarships, housing, stipends, etc. in order to become professional athletes. The message to the players is if do not like what we are offering, go somewhere else. I think the bet is there will not be a something better.

It's all just rhetoric leading up to talking points and methods of leverage in the upcoming January meetings at the NCAA Convention.

When the Major Conferences get the control measures that they desire, then they will be able to put some true heat on the likes of the NFL. I really don't think that is their goal though. Delany was just making another Delanyism in regards to drawing a line in the sand as to how far the Big Ten was willing to go as far as supporting more money going to college athletes.
