No, Soldier Field was the worst remodel I've ever seen. The design implemented was selected b/c of the vain hope that it would retain the Historic building designation. But it ended up being so bad that it drastically reduced seating capacity and still lost the designation.

Ga Tech Grant Field is bad b/c the terribly implemented North Stands along with the desire to maintain the history associated with the East stands. But a night game down on the Flats is absolutely beautiful.

I think the best CFB stadiums are actually in the B1G. The first is the Horseshoe. It has a classic exterior and a thoroughly renovated interior. I love the obstructed view flagpole.

The other would be the Fighting Illini Memorial Stadium.

Classic. Old School.

Soon to be renovated to look like this:

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football...-expansion

"The stadium that opened in 1930 and was expanded in 1997 is used fewer than 10 times a year for football games, commencement and recreational events. The idea is to use the stadium as a centerpiece where academics, athletics, students' social lives and the surrounding community come together.

The plan would make that area of campus more of a community hub. "We'll take our most iconic athletic venue and reimagine it as the site of year-round university use, not five-day-a-year athletic use," athletic director Jack Swarbrick said.

The first step is to see if space in and around "The House that Rockne Built" can be better utilized. The proposal would add more than 3,000 seats in new buildings that would rise up over the sides of the stadium and include classrooms, a media center, student center and community center.

The proposal would solve a challenge facing the university's academic side: Finding space in a central area on a campus. It would also help the athletic department raise money through premium seating and by holding other events at the stadium, such as concerts and possibly an event such as the NHL's Winter Classic, Swarbrick said.

"We're in a business where we have to generate some additional revenue out of that stadium to support the program," Swarbrick said. "Long-term premium seating plays a role in that."

Under the proposal, buildings running parallel to the sidelines would rise about three stories above the stadium, providing premium club-style seating that would include areas where fans could sit and eat. Swarbrick said corporate sponsors and other groups had expressed interest in having areas they could have during game days.

"We have a critical lack of that," he said.

The plan would increase seating to about 84,000, up from the present 80,795, although Swarbrick said he doesn't know how accurate that estimate is. The plan also calls for the press box to be moved to the other side of the field and the opponents' locker room to be moved to the other end of the stadium, meaning they would no longer use the tunnel where Notre Dame enters.'

RE: Favorite stadium designs?
Rice Stadium is a great basic design. And they removed the endzone seats bringing the capacity to 47K sideline seats. It doesn't have the creature comforts some of the newer stadiums have.

Baylor's stadium will be very nice. And I thought the schematic design was quite unique until I realized they copied a Taiwan stadium designed by the famous architect Toyo Ito. Compare:

Notre Dame is an example of a stadium I don't particularly care for. It's certainly old school, however, and tradition is important to college football.

Here's TCU. It takes the great basic design of Rice Stadium and modernizes it.

+1 for Husky Stadium. Unfortunately I can't make it to Seattle for the Cal game this year, hopefully I'll be able to get there next time.

Nebraska.

They have more end zone seats than sideline seats. It's insane.

The architects responsible for the current iteration of Soldier Field should put their diplomas back into the Cracker Jack boxes and return those boxes to Wal-Mart.

1) Chairback seats for non student section
2) Sell beer
3) Seats close to the field.
4) Upper deck not so far away that the players look like ants.

I like Nippert very much and forthcoming renovation will be great. Those pics of TCU's stadium are really nice.
That is a good looking stadium. Houston's new stadium is interesting.

Aloha Stadium is full of Pyrocrete, a cementious fireproofing material that releases "waters of hydration" when near a fire.

The only problem? It is full of chlorides, which leaches out of the Pyrocrete and eats away at structural steel.

How do I know? I was involved in a multi-million dollar products liability case in the mid Nineties involving a hospital suing over Pyrocrete.

The case took years, but finally settled.

The product was definitely used at Aloha Stadium, along with many nuclear power plants and chemical plants.

That all came out in the discovery process. Bad stuff. I saw huge holes eaten in the hospital's (I represented a third party defendant) structural steel beams.

I keep waiting to hear that Aloha Stadium collapsed.

My Grandpa was on the student committee that raised much of the money to build Memorial Stadium.
I still have an original poster for the first season in the stadium, listing games/prices.

That would be sweet.

Yes 55K, and more to come with future expansion. Bleachers will never happen in Louisville.

And the expansion to 74,000 seats ball has been put in motion, and may happen by 2016.

For two smaller stadiums, I like Harvard Stadium, the original Football Stadium, which seats about 40K.

And even smaller, I really like the new 30K or so seat Princeton Stadium.

Terry, if ND has stuck with the original 60K bowl then I would agree with its classic timeless look. But the exterior additions are going to make it no different than UM, FSU, and UTK in appearance.

RE: Favorite stadium designs?
New Baylor and Colorado State stadiums look really cool. I imagine TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis would be a great place to see a game if the team were better and the weather not so crappy.

Illinois' Memorial Stadium is beautiful, the pillars on the outside look very classy and the facility is a lot better since the recent renovation. The bowl is a little far from the action however. Tack on Cal, Washington, and TCU to having beautiful renovated stadiums as well, I would be psyched if I were a Husky fan and got to watch my team play there now.

Even though the Victory Bell rivalry runs deep, Nippert Stadium is a cool place to see a game. The architecture is top notch, it's integrated right in the middle of campus, and the sheer age is very impressive. Will be fun to see it after the renovations go through.

As far as aesthetics go, I imagine it'd be hard for any school to top Notre Dame in that category.

I echo the sentiments for Rice. It's strange to imagine that there was a time where Owls football was the hot football attraction in Houston before the Oilers, UH, and the exponential growth of UT and A&M. Personally I would simply in downsize it by just cutting the upper decks in half. Would require a new press box/suite facility, but an emerging football program like Rice would benefit from one (might push them into consideration for the AAC) and the atmosphere would really improve.

FYI, when Miami football was at its historical peak in the sixties and seventies, many alumni got together and wanted to make this Liberty Bowl-esq stadium happen:

It's safer to stand on bleachers and most Tech fans (students and alumni) stand during games (until the outcome is no longer in doubt). Comfortable fans are quiet fans.
