Prost!

...we'd probably have even more brew-pubs spring up near the you-know-what, if we had a you-know-what.

This is great, except the craft beer in Birmingham for the most part is terrible. WAY too hoppy. Hate that trend.

Try Avondale's Spring Street Saison or even their Miss Fancy's Belgian Tripel. I hate hoppy beers myself, so I would recommend these for you.

Their Vanilla porter is excellent as well.

Good People's stuff has gotten too homogenous to me, although I love their Coffee Oatmeal Stout. Cahaba Liquidambar is good. And the Beer Engineers Peanut Butter Porter...well, you'll just have to try that one.

Cahaba is good folks! I really liked the guys at Good People when they first started up their tap room...but you hardly see any of those guys any more. I'm afraid there will be a massive dog fight at Avondale's tap room one day...it's a little too yuppie for me.

All that being said, the Ham has some great craft beer and the scene is only going to get better!

...while I appreciate hoppy beers, and am proud of our local breweries. I appreciate the sweeter, maltier, darker styles as well, and agree that there is too much emphasis on super hoppy brews in the American craft beer movement. It's as if they're all trying to out hop each other. The super hoppy varieties are just too bitter to be true "session" beers, and I get to craving something more subtle and balanced.

04-cheers

TrimTab, which should be opening soon, has a delicious Cucumber Beer. It sounds frightful, but it's so delightful!

FYI, a couple of the Cahaba guys went to grad school at UAB

RE: CraftBeer recognizes UAB as 'obsessed'
I'm a bit dismayed by how much a pint of our Alabama beers cost at local pubs. You'd think drinking beers brewed in-state would be a bargain, but it seems the Alabama stuff is most times higher than out-of state beers. I understand they have to make their money in the limited area where they distribute, but I've been charged $8.00+ a pint for Cahaba and Cave City brews at On Tap. It's hard to understand how a beer brewed in Michigan can cost less than one brewed in Alabama. I don't care how much I like a beer, it's hard to justify spending $8 bucks a pint on anything when there are cheaper alternatives that are also good. I am starting to see Good People specials, and I welcome that.

Alabama's laws are usually to blame. Alabama has a three tier system for beer. Basically, a brewing company can only brew the beer and sell it to a distributor or at their own bar where they can only sell their beer. The distributor then sells the beer to local bars, which sell the beer to you. For example, Good People cannot sale their beer directly to Regions Field even though they are right across the street. The beer has to be bought from a distributor. Craft beer tends to be a little more expensive, but when you add in the distributor (as required by Alabama law) you get another middle man that rockets the price past out of state beers. I had an Avondale Saison at Jim N Nicks in Gardendale for $5.00 recently though.
