I don't really see a problem here. As a public institution, ODU is subject to the requirements of the Freedom Of Information Act, and I am sure that Vanderbilt understands that ODU had no choice but to release the document once the FOIA request was made. Having been personally placed in similar positions on numerous ocassions, I also have no doubt that ODU gave Vanderbilt a heads-up before releasing the document.
If Vanderbilt were to cut all public schools from its candidate list for OOC games, they would be left with a pretty short list, and all public schools are subject to FOIA. Face it, digging out this kind of information is what newspapers do, and FOIA opens the door wide for them. It's just the way it is.
What if Vandy thinks of it this way:
The Pilot approached ODU for the info and ODU said, "Hey, why don't you just file an FOIA?"
They probably look at the Pilot and ODU as allies.

RE: ODU Football Future OOC Schedules
I am sure that Vanderbilt was aware of the risks.
However, it would be interesting to see if this happens sometimes, if at all, with other private/public contracts.
Remember, we are new to all of this.
If it is generally understood and accepted that the figures are not disclosed in "polite circles", then we could indeed suffer substantially from the Pilot's FOIA.

I would ask Harry on twitter but I hear he has been known to block people and I don't want to lose access to his Football coverage.

I think you are reading more into it than is there. Seeking out that kind of info is just what news jounrnalists do. They see it as their job to provide the information to the public, and if they have to get it via FOIA, they will. Once agan, it seems like a stretch to try to find some intrique or conspiracy where none exists.

I understand the situation and I'm sure Vanderbilt officials do as well.
I guess Wood's only mistake was when Harry asked "How much are we getting.........." Wood should have said " I'll get back with you on that" Like, that would have stopped him for a hot second. But, when he said "they would prefer we not discuss how much they are paying us". That became a challenge to any newspaper reporter. Ding ding ding ding Almost like a bear looking for honey. It was just a matter of time. LOL

I think it's okay to be curious of the dynamic without being labeled accusatory or conspiracy theorists. It's a message board.
Sometimes you have to throw things against the wall to get others with more access to clear the air.
I think it's an interesting dynamic.

OT, I think you are right, and actually, once the question was put to him, WS was put between a rock and a hard place. It was a straight foward question that normally would have been answered. Once he did not answer the question, for what ever reason he gave, the direct move to FOIA was inevitable. I think those guys must learn that in Journalism 101, lol.

I see no conspiracy, nor any complicity with ODU and the Pilot
All I see an overzealous Newspaper.
I see an opponent that asked us not to disclose figures.
If Vanderbilt had figured on the FOIA, then why make the effort to even ask?
I suspect that this doesn't happen often, if at all.
Tangentially, I find it curious that the Pilot, to my knowledge, has not filed a FOIA request to get the details of the CAA/NBC television contract.
The terms of that are STILL undisclosed.

I understand, and maybe it's just my over-reacton, but it seems to me that this forum is spring loaded to seeking ulterior motives for almost any and every decision that is made. I have to admit, it does generate discussion. Let's just hope the discussions are always truly pertinent and not more destructive than helpful.

Aggie-
Ya, I think I over-reacted to your comment. It's easy to do on here. Often I type something, hit send and think, wow that was a very salient point only to 5 minutes later re-read it and think, "What was I thinking"
I think in this case, the pilot thought they had this great story on the 1 million payout but in reality it's yesterday's news. Everyone on here knew that Vandy was going to pay ODU somewhere b/t 750k and 1.25 mil.
It sure does look great on the cover of the sports section to the non-odu crowd but maybe it wasn't a battle worth fighting because it's really not all that relevant to the actual ODU fans and potentially damaging to Bruce Stewart and company.

Oviously, NBC is not a public institution and FOIA does not apply to them. As a conference of schools and not a public institution itself, I suspect the same is true of CAA. Short answer: FOIA does not apply here.

Not true.
A FOIA could be filed against any Virginia public in the CAA as to what revenue, if any, was received from the CAA television contract.
*My suspicion is that the contract was for exposure only, and as such there is no revenue to be had.

Vandy is picked 4th in the SEC East and has the 18th rated 2014 recruiting class. Their future's for winning the BCS National Title this year is on par with Va Tech according to 5dimes.com

I'm pretty sure this isn't Vandy's first rodeo in regards to these things and I really wouldn't be worried.
I'm sure that they don't think the Va Pilot would need to be told by ODU to file a FOIA.

Harry's job is to cover ODU football as completely and thoroughly as he possibly can. he has done a great job of it. His job is not to protect ODU, Vanderbilt or to take into account what to write based on the people on this board and what they know or assume they know. With real reporters, you take the good with the bad, and I don't see any bad from Harry thus far.

Following the Tennessean, there seems to be backlash from Vanderbilt, at least publicly.
