I would submit that tradition needs to be served in such a young program. With that thought, I submit that Nick Mayers needs to be the first number retired for the Football Monarchs.

Mayers was huge in huge games. I would honor his #7 in the rafters as one of the guys that got our program national recognition. Discuss.

From a statistical and logical standpoint, I agree that Mayers is a good choice. However I would be more inclined to nominate Ronnie Cameron.

From an emotional perspective, and to me the "first" face of the program, it might be hard not to consider Thomas DeMarco.
He would be my choice. 04-cheers

I think Demarco will be the first. The class he showed after being replaced by TH was admirable.

Players who lose their starting job to a freshman don't get retired jerseys. Retired jerseys are for on field performance not for feel good stories. Didn't realize Mayers was gone. He was beast.

Definitely agree with this. TH has been, is, and will be (at least until he graduates and maybe even beyond that) the vanguard for ODU football. I'm not saying that others aren't worthy but TH should probably be the first.

Just my opinion of course. Still, Mayers was a fantastic player who should be considered for a jersey retirement.

Yeah, forget he led this team to the best start in FCS history. He was the difference between being a Georgia State or the most successful startup program in the history of FCS football.

Yeah, forget he showed a lot of class and all the qualities of being a great student athlete. Schools don't look at that at all.

If his jersey is retired at halftime of one of our games, you'll hear a resounding approval and you'll get up off your ass and applaud too.

14 will have his number retired. But I think you select a player who was there from the start. A player who came to a program that had not played a game in decades. You need someone that immortalizes the resurrection of ODU football. A player that will remind us all of that very first day.

You seem to be placing a gross over-value on the QB position; and I believe QB is by far the most important position on the field. There may be a few former players who resent the statement that "He was the difference"

I never said schools don't look at that. Did I? This is secondary criteria. Should we retire Illiadis' basketball jersey?

Although a true statement, it does nothing to legitimize your belief that his jersey should be retired.

Gross over value?

lol, you just diminished this players accomplishments to a single feel good moment.

Did you not see him play?

The first retire jersey goes to one of the players who stepped on that football field for the first time since 1941. Demarco is a good choice.

I said your comment that "He was the difference between being a Georgia State or the most successful startup program in the history of FCS football" showed an over value on your part of the QUARTERBACK POSITION, not of Demarco. In no way does my assessment that you over-value QB play reflect on my opinion of the contributions of Demarco.

I did see him play. With all due respect to Demarco, that is how I am able to make the assessment that he isn't deserving of a retired jersey. He never "put the team on his back" in Heinicke fashion. There are multiple guys who contributed to this team just as much as Demarco who aren't on your "jersey retirement radar" just because they didn't play QB. There isn't a requirement that we retire an original player's jersey, by the way.

RE: Nick Mayers
There is a reason why the QB gets the highest salary.

TH will get his number retired, but the first one to be immortalized will be a player who committed to a program with the uncertainty of knowing what direction the program would go. A player who committed to a program that had nothing to play for but pride for the first 2 years. A player who said he's playing for a program that hasn't played a down in 70 years.

I have no doubt the first player to have his number retired will be from that group. I believe it will be Demarco.

Nick meets the criteria: he played 4 years, Graduates as school record holder in career receptions, receiving yards and TD receptions ... Had 12 100-yard receiving games. And in some way a tradition rich program needs to have traditions. I give him a thumbs up.

RE: Nick Mayers
Everyone mentioned has been instrumental in the emergence of a football program that has burst onto the ODU athletic landscape in a most spectacular fashion. But someone you have left out is Craig Wilkins, a huge four year mainstay in our much maligned defense. Here are his highlights video and his stats.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYxijpMrUDU

http://www.odusports.com/sports/m-footbl...aig00.html

Like Wilkins, Mayers was also significant in all four years of ODU football. Here are his video and stats.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-bOrkyLdSc

http://stats.washingtonpost.com/cfb/play...?id=181548

DeMarco was without doubt the face of this program for two and a half years. If he had not sprained his ankle, we most likely would not have seen Heinicke on the field until 2012 after being redshirted in 2011. He was in fact very much a triple threat player in the old school sense of the phrase. He carried the ODU offense passing and running, and his punts from the spread formation on fourth down were an incredible asset to the team. In case you have forgotten just how good he was, here are his video and stats.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiNoBms2cOQ

http://espn.go.com/college-football/play...as-demarco

Heinicke is clearly the face of the program now, and has been almost since the day he replaced DeMarco in the lineup. His final stats and highlight video are still two seasons away from being recorded and produced.

I don't mean to take anything away from Ronnie Cameron. His level of play is well documented and verified by his making the roster for the Browns. But he was not a four-year contributor nor the clear "face" of the team.

To my mind, these four players are all future members of the ODU Athletics Hall of Fame and should have a special place in the memories of ODU football fans. As for retiring the first football jersey number, I would not make that selection until Heinicke’s ODU career is over, and then I think the overwhelming consensus will be to retire number 14.

04-cheers

There is another option, they could retire the number 09 as a tip of the cap to all the players who signed on to play at ODU when all Coach Wilder had was a vision to sell. And I'm good with many of the players being mentioned (Wilkins, Ronnie, Mayo, Demarco and Mayers). But I think they'll probably wait a while to pick a player and that player will be #14.

Before I posted this is where I was heading myself. The entire first team took a leap of faith and that would be a great gesture to everyone who helped start up football again at ODU. Wilkins, Cameron, Mayers, DeMarco, Plisco!, all should get a nod as first retires and doing number 09 is a pretty solid idea.

Can you lump Cameron and Mayo in with the others? They only came to ODU because the Hofstra program folded.

Neither were on the 09 team, so they wouldn't be lumped in with those guys. However, you act as if they couldn't transfer to other schools.
