This is the audio link from WRAL Sports (in Raleigh) with host Adam Gold interviewing David Teel of the Daily Press (VA) about the momentum of getting the ACCT to NYC..
- ADs and coaches are in favor of the move
- Could the BE 2.0 Tourney be played earlier in MSG to accommodate the ACCT
- Would the BE 2.0 Tourney move to a different city?
----
My takeaway(s):
As this is now making the press rounds, I suspect all that's left is for the two parties to agree on a year commitment number (I suspect 5-7), then the parties will make an announcement before FB kicks off.
RE: ACC Tourney could move to MSG? (Audio link + weblink)
All they need to do is figure out a set number of years and announce it? Move up the BET? What will we play our conference tournament in February?
Uh hey guys, the Big East has a contract with MSG that runs through the 2026 season that was sign all the way back in MARCH!!!!
In March and the months prior MSG could have walked away from it's Big East deal legally and be scott free to sign with whoever they pleased. They decided to not place a bid for the ACC tournament and signed the Big East tournament to a 13 year deal 2 whole months ago. Now...OUT OF THE BLUE they just DECIDED to tear up the contract and go to court so they can host a conference they didn't want to sign up with 3 months ago?
Oh and if this does happen you can bet your bottom dollar the Big East will be suing both MSG and the ACC for tampering with their contract.
This is ESPN spin, but luckily for us we now have Fox on our side and no one knows spin like Rupert Murdoch.

RE: ACC Tourney could move to MSG? (Audio link + weblink)
From the ESPN link:
Quote:Sources said MSG can get out of its deal before 2026 if the new Big East doesn't reach certain benchmarks. That would open the door for the ACC
I expect for Duke and UNC to throw a huge temper tantrum about this, but to eventually go along with the MSG plan. ESPN will have a big hand in this as well.
I think there will be one last Big East tournament at MSG, and I think those "certain benchmarks," i.e. tickets sold, won't be met. Creighton and Butler have nice fanbases, but they certainly won't be able to replace the crowds that programs like Louisville and Syracuse brought to MSG.

I think Duke and probably UNC-CH would actually love to play at MSG or NYC in general. Heck Duke is UNJ@ Durham.

I'm at a loss as to how ESPN benefits from "spinning" a story that the ACC may play its tournament in Madison Square Garden. It may not happen, but what purpose is served by making this story up?
RE: ACC Tourney could move to MSG? (Audio link + weblink)
actually duke is already for it as coach k plays games at msg regularly kinda like Syracuse. I haven't looked at the contract but is there anything in there saying that msg cant have both the acc and new bigeast

It makes the Big East look second rate and since they will now be a big part of FS1's college BBall coverage it serves a very big purpose of putting down ESPN's competition. It is the continuation of the slander that ESPN has been doing for almost a decade now at this point.

Yep, that's true. Duke has a lot of students from NY/NJ and a big alumni following in the area -- heck, Coach K regularly schedules games in the region just because of that.
However, I still think there will be resistance from Duke/UNC and the other Southern schools. Still, this is a new-look ACC, and I think they'll give in, especially with some "cajoling" from ESPN.
Also for MSG, I think the ACC's potential "best" matchups in general are more attractive for getting the casual fans or fans on the street. Imagine a Duke/Syracuse or UNC/Louisville final. That's got big casual fan interest written all over it.
Quote:I haven't looked at the contract but is there anything in there saying that msg cant have both the acc and new bigeast
I think it would be a logistical nightmare--don't the tournaments overlap? I guess if one conference was willing to move its tournament, but I don't see that happening.

No one is saying tear up the Big East Contract with MSG... all the talk I've seen from MSG and ACC is about several years down the road after the current Greensboro contract ends and if the Big East does not reach specific benchmarks in the coming year or two. MSG usually has ironclad contracts with specific ways out! I've both worked for and dealt with them before in Hartford at the Civic Center (XL Center).

A little gem of a movie called Reservoir Dogs.

Show me anything that has any quote at all from MSG. All they have said is they wont speculate about the ACC.

Making the Big East have it's tournament the same time as the mid-majors is tearing up the contract.

I'll be honest - the prospect of MSG having the Big East and ACC tournaments back-to-back isn't completely far-fetched to me. That being said, I also think that ESPN is vastly overstating this story. I'm very certain that the ACC would love to play at MSG regularly (maybe once every 3 years or even every other year), but there's very little chance that they'd make it into a permanent site. You're not prying that tournament out of North Carolina for more than one year at a time.
