Alabama's economic and political systems depend on a bottomless well of stupidity. Mess with that, and you are preaching revolution.

DAMN!

And Alabama continues to get ZERO tax income from all that "Alabama money" flowing into GA, FL, TN coffers. At least the two state BCS FB programs get to sign the good players from those state's high schools (and others getting lottery funds for their schools) so they can vie for BCS NCs and Heisman Trophies while our state's own public schools languish in 4 years of reduced funding (#1 in America for cutting per pupil funding).

What are you trying to say? Georgia shouldn't be recruited?

Georgia MUST be recruited - as with those other states - if Alabama's D1 universities are to compete for conference and / or national championships. UA and AU recruit about a half dozen or so of the top instate players each year, but most of their "impact players" come from those other states. The concept that a state can build a nationally strong athletic program on a crumbling economically deprived academic base is a remnant of the "dumb jock" era when athletes could play no matter what their academic college grades were and no matter how many "basket weaving" classes they took. Universities today want to be able to brag about their athlete's academic achievements, not hide them from the public.

So? Just make them up. North Carolina manufactures academic achievements like UAT does national championships:

Well if you spend enough on tickets, you can increase your chances that you will win it. With enough money, you can but mathmatically there's diminishing returns on the money invested for what you get out of it.

Point of diminishing returns? I don't think many care about diminishing returns when spending $20 to gain a 9 figure lump sum.

It's a 1 in 170,000,000 chance. You can't spend enough to dent that much.

If you bought all of the possible permutations or most of them you could but then as I said diminishing returns. Just being facetious in my first reply (probably should've added a smilie) 04-cheers

It would appear that you are very perceptive about our state's population. They "choke" on spending more than $8,000 annually per pupil for our public schools but yell a hearty "Roll tide, Roll" for an athletic program that annually spends over $164,000 per athlete (the MEDIAN SEC expenditure back in 2010 and I'm certain UA substantially exceeds that figure) to win those three precious BCS NCs during the same 4 years (2008-2012) when Alabama led the 50 states in cutting per pupil spending by almost $1400. You might say "Alabama" won 4 national Titles during that period.

You seem to be basing much of your arguments on a false perception: that the people of Alabama agree that education is a Good.

I am saying that a significant power bloc wants to keep the people of Alabama stupid. Bammerism is a huge part of it, perhaps the lynchpin: encouraging them to identify with UAT fooobaw. That comment Brother Blazr quoted a few days ago was chilling and insightful: they see UAT football as something "for the masses" and any educational mission for the Univ. of Alabama-Tuscaloosa is not only trivial, it is an unnecessary distraction.

Here at blazertalk you are, in some ways, preaching to the choir. Few agree with your means of furthering education, but also few disagree that Knowledge is Good.

In the world of the bammers, this is not true. Knowledge is bad and dangerous. They are literally medieval in their outlook, trusting only in the Holy Drunken Bear and his disciple Saban.

You repeat those stats as though this state should be ashamed of them. The bulk of this state is not: they are PROUD not to be wasting money on science and literature and history and other useless trivia. That UAT has the highest ratio on this planet of spending per athlete is a mark of distinction in the bammerverse.

I have preached it before and will do so again: we do not need reform. We need revolution.

RE: The lottery
Man, I wouldn't know how to act if I won that kind of money. Think I'd pass on the press conference, though. People come at you from all angles when they learn you're rolling in it, you go from average joe to prime target in a heartbeat, and not just you, but your loved ones, too...Damn near a billion dollar jackpot?! I just have a feeling that only one person is going to claim that prize when the lucky numbers are called. And it's going to be someone who resides in a lottery state. I've yet to see an occurrence where someone from a non-lottery state ventures to a state where the lottery is played and emerge in an entirely different tax bracket & socio-economic status. Not that I'm aware of, that is...Anyway, good luck to those of you here that are playing. Even if you did win the whole thing and walked into a bot meeting with a check in hand for that stadium, I think they'd still refuse to accept it. For real.

Damn, you are batting 1.000!!! And sadly, these clowns fit the profile of the power structure that exists in this state on many levels. Since you mentioned "bought and sold", what did you think of the situation with those county workers selling prime spots in line for car tags? I actually heard some of my coworkers state that they would pay $40 extra or so to get to jump to the front of one of those primitive car tag lines. I'll be damned if I pay extortion money for some **** like that... It is so pitiful that this region has resorted to this backwards method of doing business with its' residents, and I didn't know that you had to buy your car tag in the county in which you reside in this state. I'm betting the Flintstones didn't have to contend with this suckage!

RE: The lottery
I still can't get beyond the "f***ery" that exists here, that a glorious multi-million dollar track and field and baseball facility can be constructed here and enjoy early and hopefullly lasting success, but when it comes to a new, yet humble football stadium, which is really and sorely needed, political "roadblocks" & excuses emerge time and time again. Anyone notice that most viable stadiums in this country have some kind of corporate naming or backing on them?

If Legion Field is so damn "iconic", well...You get what I'm trying to say, the answer is obvious, sorry for the rant.

That's exactly what I once paid a Hungarian border guard to accept my visa. Within a year, the regime had crumbled.

In a land where a racist gambling magnate can be put in charge of the country's most profitable athletic program, where bankster criminals steal billions and walk free yet Curtis Wilkerson is in the 18th year of a life sentence for nabbing a $2.49 pair of tube socks, none of this is surprising.

We live in a Third World Hell of our own making.
