Chronicle of High Ed: Who Does Your College Think Its Peers Are?
Found this article from last year on schools and their peers. This data is usually a long search through school Office of Instutional Analysis websites, but this piece has all the data in one interactive tool. Basically, everyone thinks they are peers of at least 1 Ivy, and the DeVry's and Phoenix's of for-profit education are dreamers. It also shows which schools have chosen each other:

Article
Peers Interactive Tool

When you select a school a list data appears on the right. For example, for Buffalo it shows:

Colleges Selected As Peers Buy This College
(11) Rutgers, Stony Brook, UC-Irvine, UCLA, UC-San Diego, Iowa, Michigan, UNC, Pitt, Washington, Wisconsin
Colleges That Selected This College As A Peer
(30) Clarkson, ECU, Florida St, George Mason, IUPUI, Iowa St, RIT, Rutgers, Albany, Stony Brook, SDSU, Arizona, Colorado, Colorado Health Sciences, UIC, Louisville, Michigan, Mizzu, UMKC, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Pitt, Rhode Island, UT-Dallas, UTEP, Virgina, Virginia Tech, Wayne St, West Virginia, Wisconsin
Peer Colleges That Also Chose This College As A Peer
(5)Rutgers, Stony Brook, Pitt, Michigan, Wisconsin

Its laughable some of these peer selections University of Phoenix - Jersey City selects Princeton and Rutgers LMAO. Interesting that Rutgers has 4 mutual peers in the ACC (FSU, UVA, VT, Pitt) and only 3 (Wisconsin, UM, MSU) in the Big Ten.

Pitt has 13 mutual peers, 11 from the 5 major conferences:
B1G: (Penn St., Rutgers, Michigan, Wisconsin)
ACC: (UNC and UVA)
PAC12: (Arizona, Colorado, Washington)
SEC: (Missouri)
Big 12: (Iowa State)

Buffalo and Stony Brook are the two others.

Makes sense for the most part, a lot of the good state schools around the country.

University of Phoenix seems to have each regional campus picked just about everybody around them it seems.

RE: Chronicle of High Ed: Who Does Your College Think Its Peers Are?
Great link. The flip side of Rutgers naming 97 peers is that its New Jersey neighbor of Princeton considers itself to be *peerless* by naming no one as a peer. Not even Harvard was so bold (who had named Yale, Princeton and Stanford as its peers).

Illinois was actually very reasonable. This data is from 2010, so it named all of its then-fellow Big Ten members as peers plus Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UNC and Texas. I was expecting them to name some Ivies or top engineering programs like Stanford and MIT. Out of the 15 peers that Illinois named, 10 were reciprocated (and the 3 UC schools didn't choose anyone as peers, so really only the 2 of Northwestern (not shocking since they picked all private schools as peers) and Indiana (which had a strange peer mix) didn't reciprocate), which seems to indicate that Illinois wasn't overreaching that much with schools that didn't feel the same way.

I was curious about Cal and it was fitting.

They have no peers listed.

And 41 that selected them.

Does anyone know if these selections actually play a role in ranking or anything else? Or are schools just selecting these for kicks?

I know when Ohio determined its peer list about 5 or 6 years ago what they did was analyze the mission of the schools they selected and the amount of research.

What was found was that the school profiled more in line with some of the SEC and ACC schools than what it did with the B1G land grants in its region.

Cincinnati selected no one as a peer as well, so I don't Princeton did it intentionally just to be haughty.

Marshall:

selected:

East Carolina U
East Tennessee State U
Eastern Washington U
Morehead State U
Oakland U
Southeast Missouri State U
Southern Illinois U, Edwardsville
U of Arkansas, Fayetteville
U of Arkansas, Little Rock
U of Idaho
U of Mississippi
U of Missouri, Kansas City
U of North Carolina, Greensboro
U of North Dakota
U of South Alabama
U of South Dakota
U of Wyoming
West Chester U of Pa
Western Carolina U
Wright State U, Dayton

Selected by:

CUNY John Jay C of Criminal Justice
Eastern Michigan U
Florida Gulf Coast U
James Madison U
Minnesota State U, Mankato
Rowan U
Sam Houston State U
Southeastern Louisiana U
Southern Illinois U, Edwardsville
Troy U

Mutual:

Southern Illinois U, Edwardsville

overall, mostly reasonably, though I will say that Marshall is stretching a bit on some of its comparisons.

EHC:

Selected:

Adrian C
Alma C
Cornell C
Goshen C
Hampden-Sydney C
Hollins U
Huntingdon C
Monmouth C
Oglethorpe U
Presbyterian C
Randolph-Macon C
Ripon C

Selected by:

Bethany C
Bluefield C
Bridgewater C
Eastern Mennonite U
Ferrum C
Flagler C, Saint Augustine
Greensboro C
Heidelberg U
Huntingdon C
Lenoir-Rhyne U
Lycoming C
Lyon C
Mars Hill C
Maryville C
Randolph C
Salem C
Schreiner U
Spring Hill C
Union C
West Virginia Wesleyan C

Mutual:

Huntingdon C

Again, fairly reasonable all the way around, but I think Ferrum & Bluefield are stretching themselves a bit.

Also, at this level, you can't name all of your peers. If you look at peer of peers, there is actually a lot of mutual overlap.

Ball State:

selected by:

Binghamton U
Bowling Green State U main campus
Central Michigan U
Georgia Southern U
Hanover C
Illinois State U
Indiana U of Pa
James Madison U
Kent State U main campus
Missouri State U
Rutgers U, Newark
St. Cloud State U
Texas State U, San Marcos
Towson U
U of Northern Colorado
U of St. Thomas
Western Kentucky U
Western Michigan U

Mostly reasonable, though, I don't see how the 2 privates, U St. Thomas & Hanover C can say their Ball State's peers.

Also, I think their database is incomplete, as I've seen Ball State's peer institution list, yet they list Ball State as not claiming any peers

Our Lady of Holy Cross C
Southern Methodist U
U of Miami
U of Michigan, Ann Arbor

U of Phoenix - Memphis Campus
U of Phoenix, Chattanooga
U of Rochester

Doesn't look like any of the University of California schools choose any peers. Someone in the state probably decided that the UC schools weren't going to participate. That's a shame.
