A helluva lot of research displayed in an excellent format! The link is to the large-scale map...there is a link there to switch to small-scale.

I'm disappointed they don't have Troy Landry for South Louisiana. He's probably the best representation of what you see in the real parts of South Louisiana.

Florida is pretty interesting. I would have expected, from my visits, that Tallahassee and Gainesville would fall firmly in "6. The South" ("Lowland South" probably) with Daytona falling in "5. The Midland", but the research has "Midland" dialect showing nearly into South Georgia...cutting "Lowland South" off at the Redneck Riviera (i.e., Pensacola to PCB).

I thought most people where I lived talked a lot different than the average 'Bama or Auburn fan!!! Where I live is classified as lowland South, which actually puts more of an emphasis on proper English as compared to the central or northern parts of the state. BTW, very interesting stuff blazr.

As someone who grew up in Charleston WV and has resided in San Antonio for the last 13 years I would disagree that the two cities speak in the same dialect...I get what they are saying, but there is no way the two should share a 'region'....besides that...cool map!

Edit: On second 'glance' It would be noted that the two are not in the same region at all! haha...

My down east brogue slips out every once in a while. "Time" is my most troublesome word, and I do use some of the local jargon. I didn't grow up down east, on the Pamlico Sound a little too far inland to be considered down east and I spent lots of my youth on the waters ans with guys that grew up down there.

When my dad was in high school my grandma threatened to send him to her sister in Rocky Mount for a year because he had picked up a strong down east accent. Personally I'd rather be a high tider than an "r-dropper".

Interesting map. I have seen several variations on it before, but none so detailed.

I have one quibble--as far as Canada goes, it shows Newfoundland English grouped with English spoken in provinces like New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

I spent some time in that area last year, and Newfoundland English seemed to border on the incomprehensible to most outsiders, including those from the neighboring provinces.

RE: Since we got new homies: Map of American English Dialects
I took one of these tests online and it said my accent is mid-land w/ secondary southern. I think pen and pin sound the same. WHen I changed that question's answer to those 2 sounding different the answer said, southern with secondary mid-land. Funny how one pronunciation can change like that. It kind of makes sense as I've worked around a lot of folks from the mid-west the past few years.

The Canada dialect geography is very accurate. I live in an area with A LOT of transplant from all over the country. Most of them sound very similar except for French Canadians and Newfies. You can spot them both a mile away. Biggest issue I've had here is at drive thru's. They have no idea what I'm saying and I basically have to change the way I talk to get the right order. FOr some reason nobody can understand when I say Coke. wtf? Canadian pronunciations that surprised me......

Mazda = first "a" sounds like the "a" in apple.
garage = see above
Pasta = see above
decal = da-call
lever = rhymes with beaver
defense = spelled defence (Queen's English) with accent on 2nd sylable

All of these are correct 07-coffee3 05-stirthepot

Actually, I'd say decal is dee-call. The pronunciation that gets my goat is leisure rhyming with seizure. Fortunately, I hear the version that rhymes with pleasure much more often. That and pronouncing research as ree-search. RAGE.

But usually grad students think they're smarter than everyone else even thought they've never worked a day in the field they teach.

Then you'll hate Huntington, WV 07-coffee3

But we all know that Grad Students have never worked a day in the field that they teach. They have to do something to make themselves feel better than the rest of us.

Normally, that's not the case, but with me it's bang on.

Oh wow, this video from the list of dialects sounds very similar to Coach Coker to me (mostly in the intro). Lewis Grizzard is from Georgia and Larry Coker is from Oklahoma, but the pronunciation and cadence is pretty close.
