They owe the bulk of their prestige to their engineering school. That's the reason that Purdue are pushing the Georgia Tech case inside the Big Ten.

And when was there a situation of there being any question whether GTech was "good enough" academically for the SEC. Who other than Vandy would have been competitive in academic prestige with GTech at the time that they left the SEC in part because of the academic taint of being football factories?
In answer to your last two questions :

Plenty of schools didn't have the academic prestige (or, at least, the size) to get into the SEC back then. FSU, ECU, and USM were all perceived as beneath the SEC... FSU was a women's college from about 1890 - 1955. GT was not.
I wasn't talking about the 1930's when GTech was included as a charter member, I was referring to the 1960's, when GTech left.

Quote: Also, Tulane was in the SEC back then.
Tulane left shortly after GTech left, 1966 rather than 1964, so I wouldn't be surprised if the two schools left for similar reasons.

Quote: You may look at the SEC as a bunch of football factories, but I still maintain that being able to get into the SEC back in the 1950s says something about a school's academics.
I was referring to GTECH's concerns about too many of the SEC schools becoming football factories, when it left in the 1960's.

Since nobody joined the SEC in the 1950's, I guess nobody not in the SEC was "good enough".

Well, we can always ask why SCar didn't get in until 1990. And I'm sure USM and FSU wanted into the SEC in the 1960s, but weren't perceived as up-to-par. The SEC is not the Big 10... but the fact that GT was in the SEC back then puts them in front of schools in the same area that were not in. That's all I was saying.

Remember, somebody posted something about how GT had raised their academic profile. It's just not so, though. FSU has. SCar has. Louisville has. Maybe USM has... I'm skeptical of anything resembling praise directed at USM right now. But GT has always been strong academically.

In case you were unaware, South Carolina was a member of the Southern Conference from 1922 until they left to become a charter member of the ACC in 1953. USC left the ACC in 1971, after becoming dissatisfied with the political dominance of the conference by the 4 North Carolina schools...

Check out this interesting link with news articles on the efforts of Florida State and others to get an invite from the SEC between 1955 and 1971.

I was responding to the suggestion that before they started their computer science department they were merely "good enough" for the SEC, as opposed to being at or near the top of the academic totem pole in the SEC. AFAIU, its the other way round: when they and Tulane left, it left Vandy awfully lonely at the top of the SEC academic totem pole.

FSU was a women's college from 1883 until just after WWII. In athletics, until Bobby Bowden hit Tallahassee, Florida State hadn't done anything worthy of an SEC invite...

BTW, during the time FSU was Florida's women's college, Florida was the state's men's college. FSU's male population was sent to Gainesville in 1883, when money became tight and Florida decided it could only afford one institution of higher learning for men. Now, Florida has no interest in seeing FSU becoming their equal, as far as conference status goes. The animosity and rivalry between the 2 campuses goes back well over 100 years...
