GATA!
I posed this as a reply to another thread, but I thought it deserved a thread of its own. This, to me, sums up what is Georgia Southern. GATA! ONE MORE TIME!

That's a pretty sweet video. What's the story behind GATA?

It's an "Erkism" he brought with him from the Univ. of Georgia.
It means "Get After Their A$$es" .
The story goes something like this, Georgia and Georgia Tech were playing their annual "Clean Old Fashioned Hate" grudge match at GT. On the door of the locker room it said GaTA for Georgia Tech Athletics, Coach Russell said it stood for "Get After Their A$$es". Its stuck !

Glad to see your biggest moment was against App State.
Every time I see that video, @ every 2 days when it is posted
I do think of a long line of really tough GaSo running backs that
had to be taken down. Is it football season yet?

La Tech adopted GATA for the past 6 years because our Def Coord was former Ga Southern coach Tommy Spangler.

That 2010 App game was a turnaround moment for the program at that time. It was huge for a younger group of students/fans who were "all-in" for Georgia Southern, but hadn't seen much on-field success.

Guys like me can remember going to Boone, sitting on the dilapidated bleachers and sharing the port-a-potty with the 12,000 hillbillies and 4 goats in attendance - and that's only 2003, never mind the 90's03-nutkick

Glad to see a guy like Tommy doing well. Ask him (or anyone) about Coach Russell some time and watch him glow with fondness and reverence.

In 2011 and 2012 we were hoping to get a rematch in Paulson against App. We did our part...but App seemed to want no part of it by checking out of thE playoffs the first round. Could have been two more games for the ages.

The version I have heard was that the door said GTAA (Georgia Tech Athletic Association) and he rearranged the letters to make it a motivational saying. We also use a P.C. version which stands for "Get After Them Aggressively." Several other schools use it but they are all schools with ties to either Erk or a former UGA or Georgia Southern coach.

LOL! Well that's the coaching biz! He's back with his buddy Harold Nichols who also coached at GS early in his career.

I am flattered CUSA teams have copied GA Southern's traditions. And I thought SB teams were embarrassed to be associated with FCS scools, yet top CUSA teams copy us.

You mean you haven't heard of the magical Beautiful Eagle Creek water? I can believe you left that out.

Yeah, thanks but no thanks. Not reading through pages of boring filler about a guy I don't care about. I may not care about Bear Bryant either but at least I've heard of him.

So much wrong with this...

Top CUSA teams? In this thread I see one incoming CUSA school that said they adopted it.

And what does one have to do with the other? If GATA had come from some DIII school rather than Georgia Southern, would that mean that school deserved Sun Belt discussion simply because an incoming CUSA school used it as well?

The inflated sense of worth displayed by you and many of your peers is puzzling. Football was not invented, nor reinvented in Statesboro. Get over yourselves.
