While totally expected, it's just one more black eye. The Big Unnamed Conference is like an iPod playing "Another One Bites The Dust" over and over again. Aresco must feel like Bill Murray in "Groundhog Day."

It will be interesting to see if they have yet another conference call with all the presidents that ends without the perfunctory approval of the ESPN media deal (its now been 2 full weeks since it was supposed to be approved by a vote that was just a breeze through formality).

"The report also states Notre Dame is getting the same accommodation as the Catholic 7 schools who are leaving without heavy exit-fee penalties."

Uh didn't the C7 leave a whole bunch of money behind for the opportunity to leave early AND keep the name?

Yes, but they aren't actually paying anything. Instead they're taking less with them than they would have received if they stayed another year. Not quite the same thing.

The SI article sez

Quote:Notre Dame’s fee will essentially end up forgoing any claims to the estimated $70 million the Big East has stashed away in exit and entry fees.

I thought they'd have to write a check for something.

In another thread, I alluded to Aresco caving in.

I thought that there was a chance ND would negotiate that original $2.5 million Aresco offer to $500,000 or so.

It turns out that I may have underestimated ND's negotiating team and Aresco's propensity for caving in.

Wake me up when it's 2014. I honestly can't believe we're stuck in this pitiful conference for an entire year....

I'd say blame the ACC. They're so worried about extracting their pound of flesh from Maryland that they aren't looking to comprimise. If they had been willing to do so, everything happens this year with no issues at all.

Its not so much getting their pound of flesh. Its losing their own bones if they don't drag this out. If Maryland gets settled quickly, the odds of other schools leaving increases. If it costs UVA $10 million to join the Big 10, they've got to very seriously think about it. Would they really leave $100 million on the table (assuming the Big 10 projections are reasonable)? So the ACC wants to drag this out as long as possible to increase the uncertainty for anyone thinking about leaving.

I also don't think the B1G is ready to go to 14. They want to get closer to contract renewal and also give themselves time to get carriage agreements for BTN.

My brother, a NC State grad, said the exact same thing. If anyone wants to point a finger at why Louisville isn't in for 2013, they should look directly to the ACC and no one else.

Absolutely... the ACC should just roll over and let Maryland and the Big Ten to anything they want. You want to leave without paying your exit fee? No problem - how much would you like to pay?

If the ACC was as secure as all of you are saying they are, they should be working with Maryland to expedite it as fast as possible. Given the new fee was 50 old fee was 20- meet in the middle for 35 given that Maryland didn't vote for it. Then get them out of there, get Louisville in- and you have your new conference all at once. It's insane to not have Louisville in now for next year.

Louisville will get here soon enough.

The ACC is working to expedite Maryland's exit as soon as possible. Pay the $52 million and they're out the door tomorrow.

That's not entirely true. The ACC isn't out so much to get Maryland, they just want it to be so difficult for them that it deters other schools from leaving. I'd gladly play another year in this joke of a league if it means nobody in the ACC is leaving for a long time.

Playing the Memphises and SMUs and Temples and Houstons of the world is a small price to pay to play the FSUs and Clemsons and VPIs. In the words of Mr. Miller, you know you gotta go through hell before you get to heaven.

Get over it. If you guys are as awesome as you think you are it should mean an easy BCS bowl and dominating a conference in BBall.

it is now:

basically instead of paying fees- ND not getting any of the exit/entrance fee money.

RE: Official- ND to the ACC 2013
Here is the official announcement (24 of 26 ND sports to the ACC):

"The University of Notre Dame will join the Atlantic Coast Conference for athletic competition in all sports except football and hockey beginning with the upcoming 2013-14 seasons. Notre Dame has been a member of the Big East Conference in most sports since 1995.

The University announced Sept. 13 that it would leave the Big East to join the ACC. With the departure of the seven current non-football institutions — DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Villanova, — effective July 1, Notre Dame and the Big East jointly agreed that it would be best for Notre Dame to depart at the same time.

“From the time of our decision to join the ACC we have stressed our commitment to ensuring that our departure was achieved in a collegial manner,” Notre Dame vice president and director of athletics Jack Swarbrick said. “This agreement realizes that intention and we are very grateful to the members of the Big East and Commissioner Mike Aresco for helping to facilitate this orderly and timely transition.”

While the vast majority of Notre Dame athletic teams will begin ACC play in 2013-14, the Irish football program remains independent. Beginning in 2014 Notre Dame will play five football games per season against ACC programs.

The Notre Dame hockey team, currently a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in the final season for that league, joins Hockey East starting in 2013-14.

Notre Dame has 13 currently-competing teams that are nationally ranked – No. 1 women’s fencing, No. 2 women’s basketball, No. 2 men’s fencing, No. 3 men’s lacrosse, No. 6 women’s lacrosse, No. 12 hockey, No. 15 women’s tennis, No. 18 women’s swimming, No. 17 baseball, No. 22 women’s golf, No. 20 men’s swimming, No. 24 men’s basketball, and No. 27 men’s tennis."
