Washington Post profiles Liberty
Including their quest for FBS:
Quote:Flush with cash, Liberty is building a huge, $50 million library, replacing old dormitories and angling to place its Flames football team in a conference eligible for NCAA bowl games.
“It’s grown from being a small Bible school towards the goal of being a full-service university,” Falwell said in an interview. He said he aims to carry out his father’s vision: “To create for evangelical Christians what Notre Dame is for Catholics and Brigham Young is for Mormons.”

To put "lipstick on a pig" is a rhetorical expression, used to convey the message that making superficial or cosmetic changes is a futile attempt to disguise the true nature of a product.

I hope no conference supports their attempts to gain access to FBS football.

They're like Grand Canyon University (new member of the WAC) -- they want to use Division I sports as a marketing tool to bring in more paying customers for their online college courses.

Not really, these guys want to be actually seen as a legit place of learning through athletics when in fact it is far from it.
I have cousins who went to Liberty, I am not a fan of what that school does and what it stands for.

This will sound terrible...but it is the truth.
$40,000 for a Liberty online education is a total waste. That degree carries no weight, and you get saddled with debt in most cases.
Sorry to be a d*ck.

My cousin got a teaching "degree" from there and can't get a teaching job because their courses aren't respected by anyone. They don't even teach science there.
It's whole design is to be a lobbyist factory to pump right wing lobbyists into D.C.

Some of the comments in this thread are really sad. Nobody makes these kind of comments about BYU.

I had read an article about 5 years or so ago about it. I don't remember where I saw it but a national magazine, maybe rolling stone. Not that every kid goes there to be a lobbyists but that is or at least was there intention around the mid to late 00's.

Look up some of the things Falwell said before he died. Then you might understand why folks don't like or trust him or his kid with the education of the youth of this country.

Yeah..... so what? Brigham Young was FOR a lot of things that 99% of Americans find repulsive as well. Yet nobody says a damn thing about BYU.
I couldn't care less what he said. I'm not a fan but he's entitled to his opinion just like everybody else in the US. If you don't like it, don't listen. It's pretty simple. Bottom line is the people that go to these schools WANT to be there.
Likewise Liberty is entitled to pursue FBS football if they wish.
A lot of people would be SHOCKED at some of the left wing rhetoric that is spewed at a lot of American PUBLIC universities but that goes without mention here. Notice that word.... PUBLIC? My tax money and your tax money at work but people ***** about a PRIVATE school like they can't say and operate how they want? Funny how that works.

I'm not a very religious person, but I respect the rights of others to be devout in their beliefs. I don't get all the hate directed toward Liberty. How is it offensive to anyone that they choose to offer an education centered on their faith? Nobody is forced to attend Liberty. It's a choice. Isn't that what all the liberal leaning universities profess to uphold so dearly?

There is over 100 years between Bringham Young and Jerry Falwell. Im pretty sure BY didn't have an opinion on what caused the 9/11 attacks.

If nothing else, this thread illustrates the controversial nature of LU which is something they'll have to overcome if they want to join a FBS conference

And like the right have said, I have the right to state my opinion and bash them as much as possible because I disagree with them. Fundamentally disagree with every ounce of my being everything Jerry Falwell has ever said. He preached hate and intolerance. At a time when the country was supposed to come together after a terrible tragedy he said this.
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this (9/11) happen.'"
