RE: BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE - Memphis @ Southern Miss
Memphis wins by double digits. This is their league until proven otherwise.

I think it's going to be a close game. It could go either way, IMO.

Memphis could lose by double digits if we play the way we played tonight.

Still up for review. CUSA rep and head official at the game claim he shouldn't be.

Memphis is already in 1st place. So Miss is in 2nd place. If we lose we are tied for 1st. If we win we have it all alone so it's not really a battle for 1st.

True, but both teams would be 8-1 if USM wins and we would have the tiebreaker.

Tiebreakers only work at the end of the year. No such thing as a tiebreaker in the middle of the season.

Well at least when the 2 teams play twice.

I like your confidence but I doubt either team wins by that much.

RE: BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE - Memphis @ Southern Miss
If a team from the East (besides Memphis) is going to be in first place, someone is going to have to knock Memphis off at home.
The last time Memphis lost at home to one of the 5 teams on its side of the CUSA geographic split (i.e., the teams we play twice each year: USM, UAB, UCF, Mashall or ECU) was last century. The only CUSA teams that have won in Memphis against Memphis this century are UTEP (twice), Tulsa and Houston.

That's good to hear. I could see a flagrant 1 for that foul, but a flagrant 2 was excessive.

I think I remember USM beating us in Memphis in Calipari's first year, which was 2000-2001. That game may have happened in December 2000 or January 2001, I can't remember for sure.
I had to think hard on the Houston loss, but I remember it. It was in Calipari's second year, the Dajuan Wagner year. The Cougar PG (I think it was Dominic Smith?) buried us with a huge 3 late in the game.

FWIW, I know that Brendo is repeating what he's seen/heard and has good intentions in doing so, but I'm not sure that's exactly what was stated by the "CUSA official rep". Josh stated that "The officials said there's no way he should be (suspended for a game). They told me that." That seems to be a reference to the game officials. Courtney Morrison Archer, CUSA assistant commissioner, who attended the game said the foul would be reviewed by league officials today......per Commercial Appeal 2/7/2013
He may end up not being suspended, but I'm not sure that we can glean from the available comments the CUSA official rep (Archer) can be quoted as saying that they will back Goodwin not being suspended. There's no question that under NCAA rules he would not be suspended, but CUSA has different standards. "Sportsmanship lives here" :)
We should know today.
It was an ugly game where neither team seemed able to find the basket or control tempo from tip-off to final whistle
